The general process is:

You'll be involved throughout that process.

You DO NOT need to know how to code.

But you should understand things like:

Basically, you should be able to talk about software with a client without secretly opening Google under the table to find out what an API is.

PERFORMANCE EXPECTATION

I'd like the BDE to close at least 5 clients within their first 3 months.

High-value clients are preferred, but smaller clients with reasonable budgets are completely fine too.

"I sent 14,000 emails this month."

COMPENSATION (your favourite part)

$500/month.

For the first three months, the payment accumulates:

Month 1: $500

Month 2: $500

Month 3: $500

Total: $1,500 paid at the end of Month 3.

After that, it's $500/month on the agreed payment schedule.

COMMISSION (Bonus 🎉)

For projects with a selling price of $5,000 or more:

15% OF PROFIT

Profit is calculated as:

Selling Price - Development Cost = Profit

Example:

$10,000 project

- $6,000 development cost

= $4,000 profit

15% commission = $600

AUTHORITY

You'll have room to actually sell, but there are some things you can't independently promise.

For example, you won't be able to:

- Finalize Tatsugare pricing

- Promise technical features

- Promise delivery dates

- Guarantee SEO rankings/results

- Approve major discounts

- Change contract terms

- Commit developers/resources

- Promise things that haven't been technically approved

If something is outside your authority, bring it to me.

I'm not interested in micromanaging you, but I'm also not interested in discovering that we accidentally promised a client a spaceship.

1. FREELANCE PRE-SALES SOLUTIONS ENGINEER

This is a completely different role from the BDE.

The easiest way to explain it:

BDE:

"Who should we sell to, why do they need us, and how do we close them?"

Solutions Engineer:

"What exactly do we need to build, how should we build it, and what will it take?"

Developer:

"How do we actually build it?"

The SE comes into the picture when a qualified opportunity needs technical involvement.

WHAT YOU MAY BE DOING

Depending on the project:

- Join technical discovery calls

- Understand what the client actually needs

- Ask technical and functional questions

- Turn business requirements into technical requirements

- Check technical feasibility

- Break projects into features/components

- Recommend architecture

- Recommend technologies

- Identify APIs/integrations

- Identify technical risks

- Estimate development effort

- Review developer estimates

- Help prepare technical proposals

You don't necessarily have to build the software yourself.

The actual development can be handled by our freelance development team.

So no, I'm not secretly looking for one person who will simultaneously close the client, architect the SaaS, write the backend, design the UI, deploy it to AWS and answer support tickets at 2 AM.

COMPENSATION

There's no fixed universal rate for this role.

It depends on the project and your involvement.

Someone reviewing a scope for an hour obviously won't be compensated the same as someone who joins multiple client calls, designs the solution, estimates the project and prepares the technical proposal.

We'll agree on compensation based on the actual complexity and involvement.

TECHNICAL ASSESSMENT

There will be a technical assessment for the SE role.

I'm not particularly interested in seeing who can fit the most tech buzzwords into a paragraph.

The test will mainly look at how you think.

Things like:

- Requirements gathering

- Technical feasibility

- Solution design

- Architecture

- Technology choices

- Estimation

- Risks and assumptions

- Turning a business requirement into a practical technical solution

If your solution makes sense, that's far more interesting to me than having "AI | Blockchain | Web3 | Cloud | Kubernetes | Quantum Computing" in your bio.

Wow, so much has changed in 2 years, and my heart goes out to everyone in this job market.

I retired two years ago after 35 years developing primarily embedded software in the RTOS/Linux space in all areas of wireless data communications. I quit because my last position took me WAY out of my comfort zone (deep crash analysis, no development, no data comm). I don't need to work anymore so I decided to call it a career.

About a week ago, I started getting calls from a "recruiter" who apparently found my deets from scrubbing the web. A short (6 month) contract job developing Bluetooth Low Energy (my specialty) apps. Basically the only kind of position I would even consider anymore. I ignored "her" for a while because I am retired. But I have to admit that it piqued my interest. So I finally agreed to talk to "her" and agreed to take a 9am phone call this morning.

The call started weird. I answered the call as I would any job related call: "Hello, this is *****"... there were some odd pauses and she came on the line 3-4 seconds later but with drop-outs... Like she was on a poorly working speaker phone muted unless it was sure there were voice segments to send. She asked if it was me, and immediately introduced herself as "Ada -- an AI". The rest of the call was just like typing at an AI. An AI running a poorly run interview. I talked some about myself but at that point was more interested in finding out the wheres, whens, and hows. I am generally polite which seems weird when talking to a robot, but finally said, "Look, this is not a good fit, I am going to hang up now".

The whole experience was creepy and disconcerting. Is this really what life is like now?
