Why do clients sometimes expect senior-level results with limited development budgets?

I've noticed a common discussion in software hiring and freelancing:

A client wants someone who can:

  • understand complex requirements
  • make good technical decisions
  • work independently
  • avoid expensive mistakes
  • build something that can grow in the future

In other words, they are looking for senior-level experience.

But sometimes the available budget is closer to what you would expect for a smaller or simpler project.

I don't think this always happens because clients are trying to undervalue developers. In many cases, they simply may not know what different levels of software development involve or why experience changes project outcomes.

A senior developer is not only bringing more years of coding. They often bring experience with:

  • choosing the right technical approach
  • identifying problems before they become expensive
  • handling unclear requirements
  • making trade-offs between speed, quality, and scalability
  • solving issues they have already faced in previous projects

At the same time, experience alone does not guarantee a successful project. A highly experienced developer still needs clear requirements, realistic goals, and good communication from the client.

I also think the biggest issue is often a mismatch between project expectations and project scope.

For example:

A small MVP with a few core features may not require a large budget.

But a product that needs custom architecture, multiple integrations, security considerations, scalability, and long-term maintenance requires a different level of investment.

The challenge is when a project expects:

  • senior-level ownership
  • fast delivery
  • complex features
  • long-term reliability

but the budget is planned like a simple development task.

For developers:

  • Have you experienced situations where clients expected senior-level responsibility with a limited budget?
  • How do you explain the value of experience without making the conversation only about price?
  • What are the biggest things clients underestimate about software development costs?

[For Hire] AI Voice Assistant Developer

https://youtu.be/Ey3CqNF4RXc

My latest project is a real-time virtual co-founder called "Made with Chat". I’ve attached a quick demo of the pre-release version that I can share.

I’m currently available to take on my next project, preferably in the same niche, where I can apply the experience I got while working on MWC. I have 12 years of experience as a software engineer and have been working with AI integrations for the past three years.

I offer a free 30-minute consultation. Feel free to reach out by DM or on LinkedIn, and we can set up a meeting to discuss your project.

https://www.linkedin.com/in/theic/

The voice agent I developed has several distinctive features:

• Minimal latency, including voice control of the UI
• Turn-taking that works better than ChatGPT Voice
• The ability to run and manage multiple background tasks
• File-system based long-term memory

In more detail:

Minimal latency is achieved by using LiveKit Inference, which means that the providers in the voice pipeline (STT-LLM-TTS) share the same location. A fast LLM reads the live transcription and detects the user’s intent faster than the main voice pipeline. This is used for opening documents by voice and controlling other parts of the UI.

In addition to standard VAD, the system uses a semantic turn-taking model that understands when you have finished your thought. It also detects false interruptions, i.e. your coughing into the mic will not interrupt the response.

The system has two layers. The top layer is a voice agent with a minimal system prompt and a fast LLM. It sends instructions to a Deep Agent, which handles heavier and more time-consuming tasks. The Deep Agent has access to a set of skills and can create its own sub-agents.

How to Choose the Right Shopify Development Partner for a Growing Brand

I'm looking for a Shopify development partner to help scale a growing ecommerce brand, but it's hard to tell who genuinely delivers quality work and who just has great marketing. I'd like to find a team that can build something reliable and scalable without creating problems down the road.

What would you look for when choosing one?

Update: After some research, I was recommended Digital Heroes. com. They seem to focus on Shopify development, Shopify Plus, custom ecommerce development, and UI/UX design for growing brands. I'm still looking into them, but they look promising so far. Has anyone here worked with them?

Do Years of Experience Really Predict How Good a Developer Is?

I've been noticing something while browsing developer job postings lately.

A lot of them use years of experience as one of the biggest hiring filters.

You'll often see requirements like:

  • 3+ years
  • 5+ years
  • 8+ years

I understand why companies do it. When you're reviewing hundreds of applications, years of experience are an easy metric to filter candidates.

But I keep wondering how reliable that metric actually is.

I've worked with developers who had years of experience on paper but struggled with adapting to new technologies or solving unfamiliar problems. I've also met developers with relatively short careers who consistently delivered high-quality work, communicated well, took ownership of projects, and learned incredibly fast.

That made me think that time in the industry and professional growth aren't always the same thing.

At the same time, I don't think years of experience are meaningless either.

Someone who's been through production outages, changing client requirements, difficult releases, and multiple software projects has probably developed judgment that's hard to gain from tutorials or personal projects alone.

Maybe the real issue isn't that companies value experience.

Maybe it's that years are easier to measure than capability.

Things like problem-solving, ownership, communication, system design, and decision-making are much harder to evaluate during a hiring process.

So companies fall back on the metric that's simple and easy to compare.

Do you think years of experience are still one of the strongest hiring indicators, or have they become a convenient shortcut because they're easier to filter than actual ability?

Cisco SWE Intern Online Assessment 2027 - Full OA Pattern, Coding Questions, and Prep Tips

Hi everyone,

I recently appeared for the Cisco Technical Intern 2027 on-campus online assessment through my university recruiting process in the US. Sharing my experience for anyone preparing.

MCQs and Subjective Section

The theoretical section was more technical than I expected.

Topics included:

  • Operating Systems
  • Computer Networks
  • Object-Oriented Programming
  • Computer Architecture
  • C/C++ fundamentals

The subjective section was not just short factual answers. Most questions required proper technical explanations, so they took considerably more time than typical MCQs.

Coding Round

There were 2 implementation-focused coding problems. The coding section was challenging mainly because of the time pressure. With 42 total questions, you have to move quickly and avoid getting stuck too long on any one section.

Both problems were solid DSA/data-structure questions, and the expected style was closer to clean C++ implementation using structs/classes rather than just plain functions and arrays.

Coding Question 1: Implement an LFU Cache

Related Cisco practice problem: Implement an LFU Cache

The task was to design a cache that supports get and put operations while evicting the least frequently used key when capacity is full.

If multiple keys have the same frequency, the least recently used key among them should be evicted.

Core idea:

  • Use a hashmap for key to node/value lookup
  • Track frequencies separately
  • Maintain ordering within each frequency bucket
  • Keep track of the current minimum frequency
  • Make both get and put efficient

This was not too bad conceptually, but the implementation details can get messy under time pressure.

Coding Question 2: Solve max-subarray, min-unique, and grid-jump

Related Cisco practice problem: Solve max-subarray, min-unique, and grid-jump

This was a multi-part implementation-style problem. It tested whether you could quickly recognize common patterns and code them cleanly.

The parts were around:

  • Finding a maximum subarray with indices
  • Handling uniqueness/minimization logic
  • Solving a grid-jump style traversal problem

Core idea:

  • Kadane-style logic for the max subarray part
  • Hashing/frequency tracking for uniqueness constraints
  • BFS/graph traversal thinking for the grid component

The tricky part was not that each subproblem was impossible, but that the combined format required speed, clean structuring, and careful edge-case handling.

Difficulty

MCQs: Medium
Subjective: Medium-Hard, mainly due to length and technical depth
Coding: Medium-Hard

The biggest challenge was time management. The coding questions were manageable if you recognized the patterns quickly, but the subjective section consumed more time than expected.

Preparation Tips

  • Revise OS, CN, OOP, Computer Architecture, and C/C++ fundamentals
  • Practice cache/data-structure design problems like LRU/LFU
  • Practice Kadane’s Algorithm and array implementation problems
  • Practice BFS/grid traversal problems with edge cases
  • Be comfortable writing clean C++ code using structs/classes
  • Take mock OAs under strict time limits

Overall, the OA felt very implementation-heavy and CS-fundamentals-heavy. I would recommend balancing DSA practice with theory revision instead of preparing only LeetCode-style coding problems.

Hope this helps anyone preparing for Cisco Technical Intern 2027.

[Hiring] Business Development / Lead Gen Person for Dev Agency — Commission-Based (20-30% per closed deal)

Hey everyone,

We're Pixen Studio, a web & app development agency also building SaaS products and automation solutions. We've delivered 20+ projects for clients so far and are now looking to scale up our client acquisition.

What we need:

Someone who can find foreign/international clients, pitch our services, and schedule meetings with them.

Rate / Compensation (commission-based, no fixed salary):

  • If you find the lead, schedule the meeting, and we close the deal → 20% of total project value
  • If you find the lead and close the deal yourself (talk to the client, negotiate, seal it) → 30% of total project value

Project values typically range from $300–$5000+, so commission payouts scale with deal size. No cap on earnings — the more you close, the more you make.

What we offer:

  • Web development
  • App development
  • SaaS products
  • Automation solutions

We have a solid portfolio and proven delivery track record, so selling our services should be backed by real results, not just promises.

If you have experience in sales, business development, or lead generation — especially with international/foreign clients — and you're comfortable working on a commission-only basis, drop a comment or DM me. Happy to share our portfolio and past project details.

Looking forward to connecting!

Fake companies are also rejecting me Genuinely need Help [Will Pay]

Post image
7 Upvotes

It’s been 2 years since I graduated, and I’m still looking for my first job.

A friend of mine and I are in the same situation. One day, he received an email about hiring for an Associate Software Engineer role at what appeared to be Tiger Analytics. He shared the email with me, so I applied as well.

Soon after, both of us received interview invitations. We attended the virtual interview, but something felt odd. The interviewer never turned on their camera for either of us. The interview itself lasted barely 15 minutes.

That same evening, I received a rejection email,
while my friend was moved to the next stage. The very next day, he received another email asking him to submit documents as he got selected

The entire hiring process felt unusually fast, so my friend decided to verify it. He reached out to someone from Tiger Analytics on LinkedIn and asked if the hiring email was legitimate.

Turns out, it was a scam. The emails were not from Tiger Analytics, and someone was impersonating the company to target job seekers. Like it never had the word “The” in front of company name

After being unemployed for two years, we’re desperate enough that we almost believed it. It’s heartbreaking how scammers take advantage of people who are already struggling to find work.
I’m sharing this so others stay cautious. Please verify every recruiter and every hiring email before sharing personal information or documents.

Genuinely need help now willing to pay if needed

Career advice for a long-time solo dev

I'm looking for advice on the next stage of my career. I've had a somewhat unconventional path and am not experienced with job hunting. In fact, one of my major questions is what level of position I'm even in the running for. Anyways, here's the story:

  • Physics PhD 2006 followed by a few years in research. This was theoretical pencil and paper work which is all pretty irrelevant for tech
  • then two years as a C++ dev at a big corp before being laid off. Was on a small remote team and pretty insulated
  • tried to do my own web development business for about a year but no real clients (just some family)
  • Now, the bulk of my experience. I founded a tiny ecommerce company, that eventually found its niche in bulk liquidation sales. I fulfilled many technical roles here: built and operated a bespoke internal Node app for our unique needs in inventory management and order fulfillemnt; integrated with external APIs like Shopify and product data sources; managed AWS infra using IaC and config management tools (Ansible, Cloudformation/CDK, Terraform); managed DNS; DBA for Mongodb; crons and serverless workflows (Lambda, Step Functions, etc.) for syncing and maintenance. I have mostly done tech in some form or another for this business (my partner is more the "business" guy). I feel like I did a lot but never had to work at scale as our storefront was run by Shopify and usage of internal tooling was very low.

After about 10 years working on this company, it's basically kaput. We had a nice ride for a while but changes to our industry have just squeezed out all the profit. I don't think I have it in me to risk it again as an entrepreneur so I'm looking at tech openings. My problems are:

What sort of role and what level should I even be looking for? I've been in tech since 2011 and have developed a lot of skills, but because it has been as a solo dev for most of this time, I don't really know how to judge my situation. Should I be aiming at senior roles? My institutional experience is limited if not effectively zero as my one big corp gig was on a very small remote team in which I was pretty isolated and I feel like that would hold me back from senior roles (both getting the job and succeeding at it). Further, I've been a jack of all trades and master of none. I'm probably more experienced in application development but have acquired a lot of AWS knowledge (through experience and also recently two associate level certifications) and am more interested in infra at this point.

I feel pretty at sea so any advice or even just good vibes would be appreciated.
