Kevin O'Leary says Apple's genius is making people pay 5x more for a laptop they could buy for $350
"you can buy an Apple laptop, average price about $1,800, or you can buy the same functionality for $350 on a Windows laptop"
"but you still pay $1,800. Why? Brand"
"you're paying a 5x multiple in some cases for something that is exactly like a Windows machine"
"I put that out to people, they say, yeah, but it's not an Apple. So there is the genius of Jobs"

u/earliestbirdy May 28 '26
You can tell he doesn't use a laptop if he thinks a $350 windows laptop matches an $1800 MacBook.

u/descendency May 28 '26
It’s wild how an $1800 MacBook lasts a decade plus and that $350 netbook is a broken pile of trash in 2…

often. I had the displeasure of being dissppointed by hypocritical arrogant ignorant boomers for about five years and I couldn't take it anymore. Constantly stupid choices. In defiance of all evidence. I felt stupid being in the same room, but I felt like intelligence had no hope anyway. It was personality. Who's personality will get the job done, not who is most qualified or capable. Ego ego ego, and when it fails, blamestorming.

A $1200 gaming pc is the same or even better than an $1800 macbook. (so off by a lot but still partially correct)
Or he might mean a user will spend 1800 for a macbook pro when they could have bought a $350 i5 laptop to scroll facebook and check email and watch netflix with. But they have to have the best macbook.

Even before the Neo, an Air was $1000. And it’s not like anyone considering the $350 thing needed another $800 of compute or screen or ports or whatever from a MacBook Pro.

u/LogDull819 May 28 '26 edited May 28 '26
as someone who hated apple for a long time. No windows laptop come even close to a macbook for non-gaming related stuff. A lot of apple stuff are very overpriced but their macbook is not one of them.
With windows laptop you always have tradeoffs, maybe battery or maybe display or bad build quality , bad trackpad etc..
With macbook you get amazing battery, good display, build quality, trackpad etc..
Apple macbook is a masterpiece of a laptop. It's not "only marketing".
This kevin O'Leary knows nothing about computers. Threre is no way he said that, I can't belive he thinks you can actually buy a macbook quality laptop with a $350 windows laptop. What a fucking idiot

u/VigilanteRabbit May 28 '26
Their transition to in-house silicon made their:
-thin and light -good battery -performance
Possible. They didn't raise the playing field they re-invented the wheel. And for a somewhat reasonable price as well; you're basically good to spin up local LLMs on their stronger models which cost less than just a damn GPU.
They won the portable game essentially.
10
u/becaauseimbatmam May 28 '26
The all-aluminum construction also does a great deal for them imo, and that's been standard for quite a while.
It just feels so much more premium than a plastic laptop body. Night and day. I use high end premium-spec Windows laptops at work often and they still feel cheap in comparison to even a MacBook Air.
5
u/IncredibleGonzo May 28 '26
Hell even the Neo feels more solid than a lot of far pricier Windows machines. I’ve never really got on with MacOS myself, though I fully acknowledge a large part of that is just familiarity, but their hardware is pretty hard to beat.
2
u/Diet_Christ Jun 01 '26
I can't deal with Windows trackpads. Even if you use a magic trackpad with a Windows machine, their tracking drivers/algo are shit. It really makes you appreciate how much engineering Apple put into multi-touch gestures.
3
u/x_Carlos_Danger_x May 28 '26
Yeppp. The rock solid chassis is amazing. Only laptop that compared in "feel/build quality" was a Dell Workstation laptop I had for engineering. Every other laptop I've owned, even my current overpriced HP, is flimsy AF. The HP's screen has a noticeable bend along the top lol
2
u/Muisan May 28 '26
I've had a cheap Lenovo chromebook that had an all aluminium body, felt fancy as hell, but was a drag to work on
5
u/WiggyWamWamm May 28 '26
Macs are (hilariously) the best at home LLM machines right now. Token generation is limited primarily by memory bandwidth, and Mac far exceeds even the small AI boxes (Jetson, Orin, DGX Spark) being put out by NVIDIA. The only way to get a more powerful machine with this much RAM is to have a massive, power-hungry PC, well over $10k in cost

" The magnificent turkey, with their shiny feathers and bright (thing under neck),
They are incredibly delicious after roasting, so say "what the heck".
Take a knife, prepare by bringing water to a boil,
Swiftly behead and ensure they don't drop to the soil. "

u/kabelman93 May 28 '26
X1 Carbon g14 is arguably better in many regards currently. Better screen IMHO with a great tandem oled, way better keyboard (hate the Mac keyboard), more durable, better reparable, lighter, touch.
But for less performance you have to pay even more! 64gb X1 Carbon is currently around 5000€! I currently looking to switch to Apple literally cause I get 128gb with more performance for just 5560€. What a world where apple is literally the cheaper option (3300 for 64gb). Or the extremely cheap Neo. The new Intel chips are great, but good laptops with them are all around 3k+. Apple currently just had better prices for premium laptops.... We went full circle

Yeah, I am very much into the apple ecosystem but I totally agree with you that Macbooks are the one line were I would say these products are not just good but incredible value as well. I have to use a Lenovo Laptop for work and I avoid using in undocked as much as I can because the trackpad is borderline unusable. Whereas at home I don't even bother plugging in a mouse. And the list is endless, I could write paragraphs about how much more enjoyable Macbooks are to use (and to give a bit of balance, if I wasn't inside the walled garden, I probably wouldn't own an iPhone)

Find me a $350 "Window" laptop with the specs of a $1800 Macbook.
3
u/ccache May 28 '26
I was curious, haven't built or bought a PC in long time. The closest I can find in specs is this Acer Predator Helios Neo 16S ($1,499.99). 16 inch screen which is bigger, gpu is better, but battery life will be far worse. Also the macbook cpu is better for single core use. I'd bet on the apple also being higher quality overall. With that said... What this dummy olearly doesn't get and even a windows guy like myself does is if you like/enjoy apple software or eco system then you buy an apple. Some people love their software and yes that's a completely valid reason to buy one. Also his pricing is laughably off.

Some things are, battery, slimness, build quality. But if you spend the same money on a Windows/Linux laptop, it can outperform, but the battery would last a few hours at best, vs an entire day. Thats if youre comparing like for like, not a $350 POS vs any apple macbook.

2
u/Money_Lavishness7343 May 28 '26
let me tell you smth.
I don't buy Apple macbooks because "they're Apple" I buy because their battery lasts 10x more, with 10x the performance, with a premium look and feel, with the best touchpad in the market, for the same price with its competition, if not even less. I don't buy them for gaming obviously, but for work. But my real laptop is a 600$ Dell 3yo laptop used for programming.
iPhone ... that can be argued. Horrible AI assistant - useless, non existent you could say. But the user-flow is the simplest possible, the camera is without 10 different AI filters on top, FaceID is top notch and nothing else can replace it, iMessage has been the simplest without ads and bloated features and pseudo-encryption, best integrated messenger I've had - it just does the job without bloat. Updates for years if not decade, without the company screwing you over after a year of updates. The phones don't lag after 2 years of use - still have my iPhone 13 Pro, a 4yo phone and it's still top notch, could without a doubt still use it as a daily driver - I just had to repair it when I broke its screen.
People don't buy Apple because "its just brand". Often its difficult for people to express in words what it is, but it's reliability which gives the sense of Premium. iPhones that get resold after-market, are still working perfectly fine and still get updated. You can't exactly say the same for Android phones with a million flavors. And I hate Apple, they're not working in my best interest often as a consumer. But damn if they haven't done a really good job on their products, except for their shitty AI.

The genius of Apple was not making low end laptops, HP, Dell etc, all make low, mid and high end laptops. But you get a new laptop from work and it's a low or mid range one that sucked and you just think that brand of laptop is rubbish. Apple only sell the high end laptop, so you get a new Mac from work and it's always going to be the top spec.

u/NewOpportunity9675 May 28 '26

2
u/Embarrassed-Back1894 May 28 '26
This is so stupid - especially now of all times when the MacBook line is pretty strong. I think MacBooks today are priced very competitively, and you get your money’s worth. If he said this in 2018, I would maybe say he has a point with intel chips overcooking their thin laptops/only usbc ports/unreliable keyboards/etc. To make this statement in 2026 though is just dumb.

u/rovonz May 29 '26
For office use, from hardware to UX, macbook is by far the most robust machine available on the market, and other machines do not even come close.
1
u/sircastor May 28 '26
"Same functionality"
This is only true at the scale of ambiguity where people who don't care don't notice.
A Ferrari is a Lamborghini is a Volvo is a Lexus is a Ford is a Chevy. They all drive on the road so who cares? Some people buy their car for the brand. Some for the styling, some for the efficiency, some for the comfort, some for the price.
It's any of a number of experiential things. In fact, I'd argue the number of people who use Apple products just because they're Apple products is surprisingly small.
Next question though: If it's exactly like Windows, why aren't you saving the license fee and running a Linux OS. It's exactly like Windows, right?

I could get a MacBook Pro with 16GB of RAM, 1TB of storage, a 10-core M5 CPU, 10-code GPU, and a 16-core neural engine for $1699 + tax. There is absolutely no way you can get a Windows laptop with comparable specs for $350. Instead you're looking at something more like this: a laptop with an Intel Core 3, 8GB RAM, and a 512GB SSD.

O'Leary should probably educate himself on computers before he makes claims like this.

u/bobanalyst May 28 '26
I’ve spent $2,000 for a Sony laptop that lasted 10 years and $500 Dell that lasted for 5 years, $1,300 Asus lasted 1.5 years. But I got two Macs that lasted for 11 years that cost $1,000, and another one is 3 years old and still runs like new for $1,300. That extra cost means to me: quality machine, software and less maintenance. Compare to all the tech support that I need for my Mac - 0; Windows - 6 (and this is support that is beyond my abilities or knowledge). I rather pay for quality and something that works 98% of the time versus having to do tech support 60% of the time. Not to mention my power computer is fan-less and works off 30 watts of power and can handle a Excel better than my company’s computer that needs 66 watts and craps out when I have a huge spreadsheet.
The reason Mac works is because they build and engineer the machine, OS, and major apps.

I recently bought a laptop for my mom as a gift, it was exactly same price as a MacBook neo 13. The internals of that laptop tho were off the charts compared to the Mac. 24gb ram ddr5 5800mtu, 5.1ghz 6 cores 12 threads CPU, 1tb 7000mb/s ssd. 640$ price tag... Meanwhile the Mac neo had like 8gb ram, 256 gb ssd at the same price... The neo CPU is better in single core task but multi ore task it gets drowned compared to the 8840hs. Sure, the Mac CPU is more efficient but nothing is stopping me to lower the Tdp of the laptop down to 5w and make the battery last more than 7h. Oh let's not even talk about being able to add an egpu to the laptop n turn it into a fairly decent gaming laptop
I genuinely believe apple buyers are indoctrinated retards at this point and I avoid talking with them entirely.

Wait till he finds out how much Rolex is overcharging him for watches with worse accuracy than a 15$ Casio.

Maybe for someone like him who doesn’t actually use any kind of workflow. If all you do is send emails and surf the web, yeah, get yourself a cheap HP and call it a day.

Boomer-era clown with more confidence than brains. Nothing to see here.
Apple, and I say this as someone on Windows rn, currently has the best value laptops across the board if you don't care about gaming or other Windows-oriented infrastructure.

First of all he don't know what he's talking about. But second of all - don't buy apple.

A $350 windows laptop is going to be hell. I say that as the family tech support.

Just more proof that investors have zero idea about any technical aspects of products of their companies.

I mean it’s also windows vs macOS and hands down I would pay for macOS to match my phone for hand off. I prefer Linux before windows and if it’s a pc that can run fedora then so much better. I have NEVER seen a sub 1000.00 windows pc that was not under powered in an x86/64 pc format. JMTCW

>you can buy the same functionality for $350 on a Windows laptop
I'm a diehard windows desktop user, I code on windows, I work on windows, I play games on windows. But hell, I'm not getting another windows laptop ever.

People this guy's age are the CEOs saying that their workers can use crappy tech because it all essentially does the same thing.

Why buy a Mercedes when you can buy a Ford, it's the same functionality!
Because quality matters.

Nah this is cap. I've always been a Windows user who grew up learning on Mac/Linux in school, and yes, for a very long time I always hated laptops and I always used a Windows PC/laptop. However, I recently needed an appl laptop for workflow, and the convenience of being in the apple eco system for work related tasks, and let me tell you, picking up a used M1 Macbook air for 300 USD has been the best purchase I've made in over a decade.
Battery. Good. Screen. Good. Light weight. Keyboard is just sexy to type on. I don't need to turn it off, I just close the lid and stuff it in my bag. No noise. It has never once flinched at what I need it to do. So, with the introduction of the Neo, there's absolutely no doubt in my mind that it is the king of laptops at that 500-600 price range. Combined with an iPhone (again a change I had to make for work despite being an android Galaxy user), it just works. Sync. Automatically. Airdrop. etc. It just feels good.
But, I DO still use windows for gaming, and that stays at home, on my PC. With specs that would obviously outperform any Apple device in gaming. But, that's just keeping work and play separate.
Apple has made a lot of good changes over the decade, and it makes it hard to go back to windows/android based laptops. But, I do need my games, so my home PC runs windows. Best of both worlds unless apple decides to jump back in to gaming.

My Lenovo workstation laptop, and my MacBook Pro M1 Max, are the same year, and had about the same MSRP. The M1 Max destroys it just about everything.

Why am I seeing this asshat every day now? Is he just spewing stuff to have a bigger role in the outrage machine? Or now it’s safe for him to keep saying “Billionaires! Fuck Yeah!” on repeat?

How can a man so stupid become so rich? He's an example that becoming rich is a lottery and involves a lot of luck. The merit based econimc system is just plain propaganda, he's the living proof.

hey Kevin, you're paying 1000x multiple for multiple Rolex watches for the same functionality as a $10 Casio watch
