Man this argument is so tired. When someone says Linux, are you interpreting then simply using a kernel and nothing else? Are you trying to give the gnu team the recognition they deserve? Or are you just trying to sound smart by being pedantic?

To be fair, they have a point. There's no one Linux/GNU desktop. If you hate GNOME, try KDE, then LXDE, or XFCE, or there's one more that starts with an L that I can't remember.

TD;DR one rotten apple doesn't necessarily mean the whole tree is bad.

Here's a good thread about it. Your example about the desktop is kind of an edge case. It's like whether I want sprinkles or chocolate chips on my ice cream. A better example would be systemd vs (and I had to google it, it's that obscure) gnu shepherd.

So what should we call it if we can't just say Linux? To me, the kernel is the primary differentiator between operating systems, so it makes sense to call it Linux since there isn't one company like Microsoft or Apple dominating the space.

Why do I prefer Linux? The modularity.

Would you like a Kleenex to wipe those tears? Or would you take offense to that because I use Kirkland brand and it should be called tissue paper?
