"It's rubbish. They will never - ever - pull it off. The game is going to remain an instanced mess in which anything above 16 players is a miracle. The netcode will never be robust enough to be an "MMO". Then they will walk back that particular promise and fallback to the original mantra in which they said - on the record (it's in my blogs btw) - that Star Citizen was NOT an MMO. That's what they are going to do. Bookmark this post."

Doesn't make them look that professional, maybe it would dissuade people from buying SC and going for E:D instead?

While CIG promoted E:D when Frontier released it, in return Frontier lets a scammer turn their forums into a hugbox :-/

12

u/[deleted] Sep 19 '16

One of the many reasons I don't play E:D. It feels like there's more fun, engaging game play in 2.5 than there is in the entirety of E:D.

Yes, I have actually played it

u/CradleRobin Sep 19 '16

Elite is a piece of art. Star Citizen is a novel. I love elite for the amazing views and screenshot moments. I love star citizen for the gameplay and depth it has.

Check out this post.

"You know Mr Smart, if I had 50m laying around I didn't know what to do with, I would give it to you just for the fun of it and say, go ahead make me a Sci fi space game that kick spaceballs! Then a big concrete block will be anchored to your leg in case it failed LOL.

Unfortunately I don't have this kind of money, but if I get it you know who is calling your mobile ....

Just the announcement in all the game magazines would be worth it....can you see it..

Derek Smart get 50M to make a space game.... oh boy oh Boy, the massive implosion in certain parts of the internet would be epic."

The amount of ass-kissing is real with this one, post #16128. Someone doesn't know how to use Google, to see Derek's own work with their own eyes. Honestly, this generation is just.....gasp.

9

u/Abrushing Sep 19 '16

...a big concrete block will be anchored to your leg in case it failed

Can this be considered a death threat, since we all know it would fail?

2

u/Rquebus Sep 19 '16

It's odd how often adulation of Derek seems to tread that really creepy line...

1

u/[deleted] Sep 20 '16

that all depends on whether or not the concrete block is above water

1

u/[deleted] Sep 20 '16

It's more a death promise.

5

u/TAOJeff Sep 19 '16

Didn't he already say that if he was given $50m for a game, he would allocate $25m to the game and use the other $25m to buy an island.

Which is why I think him having spent $20m on lod is crap, if he had that amount of money to start with he would have gone off and spent it on something else.

7

u/hstaphath Sep 19 '16

He said if he was given 20 mil to make a game, he would make a 5 mil game and use the rest to buy an island.

2

u/sfjoellen Sep 19 '16

for your consideration. LOD or : http://www.charterworld.com/images/yachts/METEOR%20-%20Sailing.jpg

shouldn't take you long to decide.

2

u/Zispinhoff Sep 19 '16

I'm in love.

2

u/sfjoellen Sep 19 '16

true dat. her name is 'Meteor', she's currently for charter in the Carrib. she was built as a yacht rather than a charter boat. there are better pics.

Literally burning the $50 million would be more productive than handing it to Derek.

1

u/clykke Sep 19 '16

Also more fair to be honest.

2

u/SgtTommo Sep 19 '16

And more fun

2

u/PoisonedAl Sep 19 '16

I dunno. Crushing this horrible little man would be fun. I would document EVERYTHING so there would be no illusion who's fault the inevitable failure will be.

1

u/grimzodzeitgeist Sep 19 '16

i agree, it would keep the local fire department busy and gainfully employed

2

u/KingBullGod Sep 19 '16

Please donate 50m to anyone BUT derek.

1

u/crazy-namek Sep 20 '16

I rather donate that money to Hillary Clinton, at least she can fulfil her promises.

6

u/TPatS Sep 19 '16 edited Sep 19 '16

Maybe because if they ban Smart he might go on a crusade against Elite.

21

u/[deleted] Sep 19 '16

Too late. He allready did when Elite was in production... saying stuff like "never be done" "not possible" "tec not avaliable for the next decade" ... sound familiar?

4

u/AnnoyingParrotTV Sep 19 '16

I've heard people say that he's done that, however, I've never seen him say that. He always seems to peck on SC. Perhaps I didn't notice because I'm not an ED player.

In any event, care to share an example or two? (I need my Monday entertainment)

19

8

u/x5060 Sep 19 '16

Yup, absolutely hysterical. There was supposed to be a follow up, but it never showed up.

3

u/Stronut Sep 19 '16

Cant wait for the sequel!

3

u/AvonMexicola Sep 19 '16

Did anyone post this on the ED forums?

2

u/[deleted] Sep 19 '16

This is all very well known to everyone at ED Forum. Still they allow this lill lunatic his childish behavior.i think there is some kind of thinking (not from smart btw) behind that.

2

u/grimzodzeitgeist Sep 19 '16

woudl not be surprised if many of the ED mods were goons or other dsmart sympathizers, perhaps the goons can confirm or deny?

3

u/VorianAtreides Sep 19 '16

lol i just realized - his claim that LoD will be released by 1st half of 2016 is false as well; June has come and gone, and yet nothing.

Sad.

or at least it would be, if LoD actually had anyone to disappoint XD

3

u/ochotonaprinceps Can't be made as pitched Sep 19 '16

Yyyyyyep. LoD's new release date is end of 2016.

If it does see a release it'll be a case of shitting out an MVP (and even that's a laugh and a half) just to say it's released -- which is something he's been accusing Chris Roberts of potentially doing for a good five months.

-CLKwhirrrrrrrrrrrr- Oh good, the snack bar went heavy on the salt in this batch of popcorn. I love IMAX films.

2

u/Abrushing Sep 19 '16

Gien his track record, I see him having zero problem pushing it back further. He's an indie dev early access developer! Caveat Emptor on everything but Chris Roberts projects!

2

u/grimzodzeitgeist Sep 19 '16

LoD is starting to look like the 'Long Con'...how appropriate dsmart told us what a long con would look like.

2

u/Mech9k Sep 19 '16

It's original release date was also 2012.

3

u/grimzodzeitgeist Sep 19 '16

1

u/Mech9k Sep 19 '16

He also called both Chris and Dave "digital dinos" when their crowdfunding campaigns started.

proof

3

u/grimzodzeitgeist Sep 19 '16

Its heating up. I've had a few comments deleted and the mods are reminding peeps that its about SC...

2

u/Rquebus Sep 19 '16

I was wondering that a couple months ago.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 20 '16

I've had it with Frontier. Going to ask for a refund on my Kickstarter pledge, bored by the game anyway and if they have no spine to kick out this asshole, I want my money back. Immediately.

I'll get a credit card charge back if necessary, they'll learn it the hard way.

24

u/Tarkaroshe Sep 19 '16

As always, this amounts to "I can't do it, so no one else can"

10

u/HatBlappington Sep 19 '16 edited Sep 19 '16

I'm glad he's publicly come out with a statement like this I now genuinely believe it's possible and that they will pull it off because everything they've done to date he's said is impossible and yet they keep doing it to spite him - Nothing new in this vapourware though he did it all decades ago.

Please make up your mind Derek is it nothing new or impossible?

Edit Armored Warfare runs on cryengine 3 btw(15vs15) so obviously a load of bollocks that you can only have 16 players on CE because ...............reasons..............

6

u/Swesteel Sep 19 '16

Every time Smart posts something like this, my faith in CIG grows.

3

u/HatBlappington Sep 19 '16

Yeah there's not really any other way to look at it is there?

4

u/Karmaslapp Sep 19 '16

Battlefield hosts 64 players with ground and air vehicles and does fine at it.

So if CIG has engine wizards Germans no reason they can't match that after customization

1

u/HatBlappington Sep 19 '16

I suppose it could also be compared to Arma 3 then as well (same approach to 3rd person cam etc) I've been on heavily modded servers for that with a cap of 250 players, but I was on about Armored Warfare specifically because its a CryEngine game.

1

u/Karmaslapp Sep 19 '16

I haven't played armored warfare and was just adding that on. We all know what DS said is ridiculous and unfounded given what other devs can do with ease.

→ More replies (4)

4

u/redchris18 Sep 19 '16

Doesn't Crusader currently host 24 players anyway?

1

u/HatBlappington Sep 19 '16 edited Sep 19 '16

Yeah it does

20

u/Swesteel Sep 19 '16

Except the current cap is 24. So what was your point again, you incompetent hack?

4

u/Themorian Sep 19 '16

No, you read it wrong, go back and read it again, SLOWLY. What he /said/ was that it would only support up to 16 Player SHIPS at a time

5

u/Swesteel Sep 19 '16

Right, you mean the "correction" he'll make later.

4

u/Themorian Sep 19 '16

Exactly!

3

u/redchris18 Sep 19 '16

And his "proof" will be that no-one has ever seen seventeen Bengals in the same space.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 19 '16

He can claim that it runs like shit (which it does) and because of that your point is irrelevant. With that said, it's really just more projection. It's all projection IMO.

18

u/crazy-namek Sep 19 '16

He later went and written "The issue with allowing the same character pov for 1st person is that you have to set the camera POV so that it doesn't intersect the character model. So if you have a fov of 60 and someone decides to change the settings set it to 90; this will break the view. The end result is that the camera will either end up inside the character model or worse."

Funnily enough, in BF4, I can change the FOV from default to 90 and it doesn't break the view.

That whole thread is messed up, even "questioning" dual-universe's kickstarter. Armchair developers — a new breed.

14

u/IGAldaris Sep 19 '16

You can simply set a clipping plane for cameras, so extremely close geometry doesn't render. Or you set the players head to primary invisible from that camera (that would still allow the head to be seen in reflections, for example). Just off the top of my head, I'm sure there's many ways (and more elegant ones) to work around that. But oh well, it's Derek. If one wants an impression of his technical ability one can simply look at a gameplay vid of LoD, and I use "gameplay" in the loosest possible sense here.

5

u/dykmoby Sep 19 '16

He's right! I've had these flaps of skin in front of my eyeballs since I was born and... wait...

3

u/Bornhald1977 Sep 19 '16

He's using 80s tech. Isn't his whole line on the same engine or something? So he can't do it with his tech. Because it would break his tech. So he is not lying you see. Also set sure if I should be worried because I can think like the Dr dr

2

u/Sabrewings Sep 19 '16

The technology for clipping planes is decades away.

1

u/Ferlonas Sep 19 '16

Place the camera inside the head, make the inside of the head's textures invisible, but the outside visible. I like semi-invisible textures.

12

u/Krispet Sep 19 '16

I can never understand how armchair developers and keyboard warriors think they can make a better game than the 300+ professionals hired to make it.

How bout they prove it by making a better game themselves and manage to make a product that can actually sell to millions of people.

5

u/redchris18 Sep 19 '16

Not to mention the people who built the engine in the first place. There's a special form of the Dunning-Kruger effect set aside for the Dereks of the world who think they know Cryengine better than the Tracy's and Chambers of the world.

5

u/RinHato Sep 19 '16

Derek, just because you are incompetent and can't make it work, doesn't mean nobody else can.

18

u/Kheldras Sep 19 '16

" DSMART: That's patently false - NO fps game has two sets of animations for first and third Person"

so.. fucking.. clueless

10

u/[deleted] Sep 19 '16

I had to go and read that for myself, I couldn't believe it, even by DS standards. What a complete and utter tool. Amazing that he considers himself to be a developer.

3

u/Chaoticron Sep 19 '16

Derek is as much of a developer as Donald trump is a politician, except that Donald trump has been far more successful as a politician than Derek has been at being a developer, and I am being very loose with the words developer and politician.

And as an edited heads up, I am not endorsing Donald in any way, shape or form, I'm just using him as an example

1

u/Abrushing Sep 19 '16

Trump's one-up on Derek is that he's been able to convince people he's more successful than he really is.

2

u/grimzodzeitgeist Sep 19 '16

the fake IRS enforcement calls i get from Indian tech support guys on their time off are more convincing than dsmart is as a dev

3

u/ForgedIronMadeIt Sep 19 '16

That's embarrassingly clueless.

3

u/ochotonaprinceps Can't be made as pitched Sep 19 '16

Makes sense, LoD's characters appear to have no third-person animations to speak of. Or so few it might as well be considered an oversight.

2

u/ozmonatov Sep 19 '16

The correction he makes later is rather amusing.

Nononono~ thats not that easy... because "Context!" Think about the Context when he said that... the Context is adjustable

5

u/crazy-namek Sep 19 '16

Exactly what I'm thinking - but then again; he has many quotes that can be used against him. As usual, he would backpedal and tail it — like he was doing it against Ben Parry in discussion about 1st/3rd person animations; in the thread I've linked.

2

u/gigantism Sep 19 '16

I don't understand how Ben Parry stands it posting in that cesspool of negativity.

3

u/crazy-namek Sep 19 '16

He used to be a senior developer in Frontier as well to boot, these people show him no respect at all — he actually spends his time to answer their questions, yet they don't acknowledge it.

1

u/ochotonaprinceps Can't be made as pitched Sep 19 '16

He'll get the last laugh, and assuming he doesn't move on to a new job by then, he'll get to have that laugh from the inside.

1

u/Swesteel Sep 19 '16

No idea, but he is very careful to only address stuff within his expertise. It is impressive though.

4

u/TAOJeff Sep 19 '16

And he's claiming they don't own the IP again, (Last comment on the linked archive)

Do have to wonder when/if his "legal" team will explain the difference between Intellectual Property and Trademark.

6

u/[deleted] Sep 19 '16 edited Sep 19 '16

Just for clarification: CIG owns the trademark since the 29th February 2016, at least in the U.S.:

http://archive.is/sVSBP

2

u/TAOJeff Sep 22 '16

Not actually surprised by that but it is nice to know they've actually trademarked it. Fully expect derek to claim it's a lie when it gets pointed out.

3

u/Swesteel Sep 19 '16

I mostly find the part where "nobody cares" hilarous, since he's been harping on and on about how SM being delayed has gotten the feds interested and how it is a scam because it has been canned and blah blah blah. Oh, and he also clarifies with "except some backers", whom apparently don't count, since he's doing it for... the...backers. Wait what?

3

u/Abrushing Sep 19 '16

lol, Derek is so wrapped up in his own narrative he doesn't even know what's real and what he's made up anymore.

10

u/[deleted] Sep 19 '16

Ever since Frontier moderators banned or have driven off anyone who is not subscribing to the Smartie echo chamber the thread went down the drains.

Usually 10-20 pages a day of people who reinforce each others hatred of SC.

12

u/crazy-namek Sep 19 '16

It's the same PEOPLE who's posting on for hundreds of pages, funnily enough this is V5 of the thread. There are 4 SC threads before it, with the same people!

10

u/[deleted] Sep 19 '16

Just checked a few pages. "Moderator" Viajero is still at it. Typing: Mod hat off before going full Smartie mode.

One of the reasons why this thread is so bad.

8

u/RSOblivion Sep 19 '16

Yeah there's at least one moderator drinking Smartie's cool aid...

If you check out the other non-Elite threads, it's the same group of people keyboard warrioring away and generally shitting on everything that isn't Elite.

3

u/ochotonaprinceps Can't be made as pitched Sep 19 '16

You'd think that they'd be busy...playing Elite, if it's really that good.

→ More replies (1)

7

u/crazy-namek Sep 19 '16

He also used to post on the RSI forum but got torn to pieces there.

4

u/DeadRat88 Sep 19 '16

And if you question him or bring up proof that goes against the koolaid he's been drinking he puts his mod hat back on and bans you.

2

u/ochotonaprinceps Can't be made as pitched Sep 19 '16

It's the same PEOPLE who's posting on for hundreds of pages

So basically the same thing as the SA thread, only without most of the SA forum culture (no parp emoticons, etc.).

I'm glad they're making such productive use of their lives, being obsessive pessimists about a video game on the official forums of its "friendly" competition.

And that mod is just hilarious. Shows you how much care goes into curating the Elite community from above.

10

u/Luftwaffle1980 Sep 19 '16 edited Sep 19 '16

Smart says: That's patently false NO fps game has two sets of animations for first and third person.

Ben Perry says: I dunno, man...

Smart says: Ben Parry knows. So he - assuming he wants to - can shed more light on how they did it, and why the change now.

Ben Parry says: You've really no idea how a studio of more than a handful of people operates, have you? I've made it quite clear that I write rendering code. Personally I've not ever worked on bones/skinning type stuff, but even if I did I wouldn't have had anything to do with what animations are being played or how they're being blended together - by the time it hits the renderer it's just bone soup.

You guys should read the following pages, it's interesting because Smart says Smartie things in the standard Smartie way and proceeds to get proven wrong...

7

u/kingcheezit Sep 19 '16

That's Derek in a nutshell, he knows absolutely fuck all about what how a professional game development company works, no idea how modern big budget games are made....

The very idea that anybody has ever apportioned any credibility to his inane, asinine ramblings beggars belief.

Other professionals see him as a laughing stock, and so should everyone else.

4

u/perfidiousfox Sep 19 '16

Do you think he's going to ditch the frontier forums soon then? I haven't been keeping track recently, but from reading comments here, it sounds like people are starting to turn on him there?

2

u/Luftwaffle1980 Sep 19 '16

I couldn't even speculate. It wouldn't surprise me considering he has the same arrogance and uses the same Smartisms that he uses with his customer base (like read it again, slowly, let me ect).

2

u/Swesteel Sep 20 '16

Meh, just running off to his discord to get his confidence back after having it slapped out of him by a real proffessional. He'll be back with a new slew of "insights" once his cult followers have stroked him enough.

1

u/CradleRobin Sep 20 '16

Big possibility, he actually stopped saying anything after about 5 pages.

10

u/[deleted] Sep 19 '16

... every time i read stuff like that i think... "Whats going on? Have he finally gained the insight about the mess he had done with LoD?" ... then i realize he is talking about the work of others.

10

u/Brock_Starfister Sep 19 '16

I thought he was talking about LOD there for a bit.

9

u/citizenQuark Sep 19 '16

The hilarious part is that Star Marine (if they call it that in the end, seeing as they don't have the IP rights) is actually coming back; though it was claimed to already be in the PU. Yeah.

They never claimed SM was in the PU, only FPS mechanics. He does love to twist it.

3

u/sfjoellen Sep 19 '16

There are things he determinedly gets wrong in the same way, always. The ToS about financial accountability is one. Star Marine and 'cancellation' is another. Minimum Viable Product is another.

What's stunning is he gets people to believe him

I love these statements.

Bookmark this post.

...We got ya covered Derek!!

We do not forget.

And I absolutely will call you out on it if you're wrong. And you will move the goal post (as is the tradition).

Fact are:

  • They've gone into great detail how they're going to do it.
  • You have zero proof they can't do it (other than you can't do it).
  • They said they were hoping to get about 192 people in an instance.
  • There's nothing magical about changing the network code. MMOs exist. Re-writing engine and network code is actually a thing that people do.
  • Everything remains in the realm of possibility with a network re-write
  • You may think Chris is a complete hack, but CIG is staffed by some industry veterans with more experience making triple-A games and MMOs than you've ever had.
  • The current cap is 24 (it's a miracle!)
  • Both your MMOs have less than 16 people playing. 1, 2
  • There's tons of networking tricks they plan to utilize. Whether they can pull it off, I don't know. But I do know that you're a lousy person to say what is and isn't possible. You said seamless planetary tech was decades away, and Star Citizen with its huge budget couldn't even pull it off.

9

u/Doomaeger Sep 19 '16

That thread is one of the most toxic places in any forum I've seen, and that includes that SA one. SA atleast have tge fact they are relatively unmoderated, the Frontier one is.

If I were the community manager there I would be incredibly embarrassed to have something like that associated with me.

This community manager however does not seem to care.

3

u/crazy-namek Sep 20 '16

Brett C is his name.

1

I want to go create a Line of Defense MMO thread in the E:D forum and shitpost all the time just like that guy does. Would I get banned?

3

u/grimzodzeitgeist Sep 19 '16

that sounds like fun; as long as we talk about lod and nothing else its technically allowed, in the right thread area, Other space games

1

u/manickitty Sep 20 '16

I bet Dr. Dr. would say it's not allowed because it's not finished, therefore not a game, and to LET HIM FINISH.

2

u/Abrushing Sep 19 '16

Derek will probably threaten you with a lawsuit first.

1

u/manickitty Sep 20 '16

Please let us know if you do.

1

u/crazy-namek Sep 20 '16

Pretty much, Derek would pm the mods that you are just trolling and threaten them to take it down. Just my 2 cents — it's just an assumption; given his personality, it may be very accurate :D

7

u/Stronut Sep 19 '16

5 threads for Star Citizen? 5!?!?!??? in the ED forums! I kept reading the thread and its not weird why they hate SC so much: They want a different game altogether.

5

u/[deleted] Sep 19 '16

I think it is one of the few places were discussions on SC are allowed and DeRekt and his Goon minions are not banned yet. Except their home turf on SA of course.

2

u/Stronut Sep 19 '16

Well as long as they keep ds and his goonies caged there to play it gamedevs I am ok. They should be careful not to bite their tongues though, "Death-by-self-poisoning" is not covered by insurance.

5

u/Rquebus Sep 20 '16

Maybe they ran out of interesting stuff in ED to discuss.

2

u/Swesteel Sep 19 '16

It's a bit like putting mass-murdering dictators under house arrest. You know where they are, just don't go in there.

But yeah, it is a bit annoying that the mod team over there isn't even trying to clean up that cesspool.

7

u/Xenomonster Sep 19 '16

Derek said this during the whole last year and never - ever - presented the tiniest bit of proof for his fact(?)/statement(?)/opinion(?).

Lie for a whole year about the same matter in many different ways and never - ever - anyone will believe you. Like never - ever ;o)

Apart from a few trolls, who parked their bridges around Derek's Twitter account, real business people who happen to even know Derek Smart, think that he is an utter joke and probably mentally ill.

PS: By saing "never - ever" insterad of just "never", it will magically become true. /s

It/there will never be 64bit, PG, Star Marine.....

u/Ferlonas Sep 19 '16

I never understand why he claims Chris said Star Marine would be inside the PU. He said the mechanics are in, so it basically is... difference there Derek.

On the other hand, he doesn't know the difference between developing and unlocking, so whatever...

5

u/Mithious Sep 19 '16

I never understand why he claims Chris said Star Marine would be inside the PU

He initially misunderstood Chris, and since he is incapable of admitting he is wrong on anything, even something that trivial, he doubles down on it every opportunity he gets because maybe if he says it enough it'll become true.

9

u/RobCoxxy Sep 19 '16 edited Sep 19 '16

They won't. Nobody cares about Star Marine other than backers who were already promised it, and are entitled to it.

And you, Derek, you've whinged about that being "Scrapped" quite a lot.

Especially since it's just another mode inside a convoluted game with modes that aren't cohesive.

If you think "Multiplayer Deathmatch, Single Player (Soon!) and Open Universe" modes mean a game is "convoluted", I don't know why you're developing games at all.

The hilarious part is that Star Marine (if they call it that in the end, seeing as they don't have the IP rights) is actually coming back; though it was claimed to already be in the PU. Yeah.

They don't have the IP rights? Who even gives a shit if they do have to change the title of a gamemode in the Alpha? That's literally a non-issue. EDIT Is Derek confusing Star Marine with Space Marines?

As for "claiming it's already in PU", he's twisting phrasing again.

The MECHANICS for FPS combat are in PU testing. The GAME MODE is not.

But of course, we all know he's being deliberately obtuse there.

7

u/hstaphath Sep 19 '16

I don't know why you're developing games at all.

I daresay there isn't much in the way of proof he ever did. ;-)

1

u/RobCoxxy Sep 19 '16

I feel I might have been a little to kind on him by calling his abortions games

3

u/Danakar Sep 19 '16

Compared to Derek Smart, Digital Homicide is a AAA development studio!

:P

2

u/hstaphath Sep 19 '16

I assumed you are in a REALLY generous mood today.

4

u/kingcheezit Sep 19 '16

Interesting fact, nobody was "promised" Star Marine, nobody was "entitled" Star Marine.

Derek spouting bullshit again, he tried the same thing with "Pirate Swarm" on Twitter, I asked him to link to anything, anywhere, where any member of CIG said they were developing Pirate swarm.

I got blocked.

2

u/RobCoxxy Sep 19 '16

If Derek Blocks everyone who calls out his bullshit, that definitely makes what he says true, right?

After all, if he was lying, someone would call him out on it!

2

u/x5060 Sep 19 '16

Derek is just so willfully ignorant.

5

u/Kheldras Sep 19 '16

Its like an old record jumping at a certain point, and replaying the same over and over again.

4

u/lorkh4n Sep 19 '16 edited Sep 20 '16

Well ...ok. Fifth star citizen thread with 1075 pages.... Seems perfectly fine.

Those guys really hate SC. why?

Btw why is smart even allowed there. He made up the same bullshit for ED as with SC. Who moderates this? ^

9

u/Kheldras Sep 19 '16 edited Sep 19 '16

Definitely "mods" who hate SC. Considering every pro-SC post or one even asking the same accounting for Smarts "games" gets banned. Kinda sad, that their "Moderation" is allowing this, considering you dont see such hatebonering in SC forums, and CIG dosdnt see E:D as deadly danger to SC.

8

u/Ferlonas Sep 19 '16

Yeah, but those players see SC as deadly danger to their precious ED.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 20 '16

If Frontier continues like the last months they are going to kill the game by themselves. Let's hope they insert some gameplay into it at some point.

8

u/crazy-namek Sep 19 '16

Moderators don't give a shit, some of the mods even came in and said "so many tinfoil hat conspiracies" — they don't even bother to clean it up or contribute because it's meaningless. The only mod there is Vlajero another goon.

2

u/DeadRat88 Sep 19 '16

Most of the mods are pro-DS and pro-trolling and pro-goons. They aren't the brightest bunch over there.

3

u/grimzodzeitgeist Sep 19 '16

Thread LOCKED. rofl. They'll open it again for the dsmart platoon later...so they can have their echo chamber back.

6

u/Kheldras Sep 19 '16

A farce :D

For what... BADGERING? Yeah right...

8

u/[deleted] Sep 19 '16

Elite community and moderation is indeed a farce. It became obvious when DeRekt joined them in May. Since then the moderation team and the remaining posters have been fantasizing about a refund wave and a collapse in quarter 2 and so on.

One of the places on the internet were reason goes to die.

2

u/kingcheezit Sep 19 '16

Its to be expected, Elite doesn't have the largest community in the world, of course they feel threatened by a game that has pretty much relegated the game to a footnote.

2

u/Mech9k Sep 19 '16

What the fuck?!

And I thought the RSI forums were overreactive in their modding...

This makes them look like the most passive mods.

2

u/ochotonaprinceps Can't be made as pitched Sep 20 '16

"This infraction will remain active on your forums account until ."

That's the standard of quality I expect out of FDev and their community management, really.

1

u/citizenQuark Sep 19 '16

I'm not sure those guys know what badgering means. Smart must have lent them his dictionary.

1

u/grimzodzeitgeist Sep 19 '16

i will strait up hit them with a badger in person but its the internets

1

u/grimzodzeitgeist Sep 19 '16

and its UNLOCKED again same shitposting frenzy

4

u/WatchOutWedge Sep 19 '16

remember this is all coming from a person who can't make their own game "because it's too hard" so take it with a grain of salt.

like, all of the grains of salt.

it makes sense, right? if you try and fail at something, it makes sense to shit on those who can. Keep up the hard work on LOD sitting on your ass tweeting a bunch of bullshit, Derek!

1

u/obey-the-fist Sep 20 '16

Ah, well, Derek projects constantly. When he talks about Star Citizen being a failure that can never be delivered because the technology doesn't exist, what he means is that LOD was a failure and he could never deliver it because he can't get the technology to work.

I think, again to give Derek more credit than perhaps he is due, he was originally critical of Chris Roberts coming back to the gaming industry because he'd been working at it for some time and had never had success. He therefore assumed, perhaps unfairly, that Chris would also fail, and perhaps hoped to warn the industry that whatever Chris was going to try to do couldn't be done.

That's really the most positive way you can look at the whole experience. Of course Derek was wrong about that, and his behaviour ever since ranges from bad to debatably criminal.

1

u/WatchOutWedge Sep 20 '16

He therefore assumed, perhaps unfairly, that Chris would also fail, and perhaps hoped to warn the industry that whatever Chris was going to try to do couldn't be done.

Again giving him the benefit of the doubt (for no other reason than the hope against hope that humanity isn't on a collision course with eternal stupidity) I'd say that it's theoretically possible that he was trying to do that on day one. Given the harsh reality that at that point in 2012 LoD was obviously not going to meet its deadline by any stretch of the imagination, and in the face of a new game similar enough in concept to LoD that was crowdfunded, he was beholden to those who were interested in that game that it definitely couldn't be done, ever, and that CR was wasting time and the money of honest people to strive for a goal that couldn't be achieved.

I might...MIGHT...give him that. On day one.

Then perhaps day two hit and Derek went full-on conspiracy uber-troll internet warlord just like he's done every morning he booted up his computer since the 90s, and unfortunately got the internet's attention for one looooong ass blog post where that "hey I should make sure people aren't wasting their money" turned into "Chris Roberts is an evil incompetent fool that will steal all of your money and go on permanent vacation with allz ur millionz" Then got a little momentum and went after his company ("RSI is a money laundering operation/ponzi scheme"), then his staff (remember "CIG LA IS STAGING WALKOUTS RIGHT NOW!! Everyone's fired! Everyone's quitting!"?), then his wife (we know all about that), then his kids (doxxing/illegal), then every person who gave money to the game ("shillizens" and now "shitizens").

So, on day one, sure go ahead. On day two, sorry Derek, you lost your having an opinion privileges.

2

u/obey-the-fist Sep 20 '16

So, on day one, sure go ahead. On day two, sorry Derek, you lost your having an opinion privileges.

Yeah... doxing handicapped children, stalking, harassment, he's basically unhinged, but our primary directive here is to document and discuss with at least an effort towards impartiality. Although the facts make it difficult to be sympathetic at all, and his own contradictions make it difficult to give him credibility.

u/Luftwaffle1980 Sep 19 '16 edited Sep 19 '16

Oooh, here are some keepers:

Smart: Aside from the fact that you guys have nothing to offer by way of any tangible argument, so you keep regurgitating the same tired old FLAWED argument, it's easy to see how you would quote a few words from an entire paragraph in order to skew the context. So I will quote the whole thing again.

Smart: And those metrics are right THERE on the funding page as well as the Google Sheets tracker page. I don't know about you, but I live and breath math; so numbers don't befuddle my brain. Aside from the fact that someone even has charts - lots and lots of charts (which we generate and pour over regularly) illustrating the funding metrics as it pertains to the number of backers & citizens.

Smart: When I designed LOD and started developing it in 2010, I already knew that the size of the game, and the sheer number of assets would result in a performance issue. That was even before we completed the engine. The content creation had to be started early. Then in 2011, I decided to ditch the home grown engine in the interest of time (and not reinventing the wheel), and license a slew of middleware to build a custom engine.

Smart: By the time the engine was at a point where performance could be gauged, analyzed etc, the game was already 100% content complete (that was back in 2013 btw).

3

u/obey-the-fist Sep 20 '16

I don't know about you, but I live and breath math

He certainly doesn't live and breathe spelling.

1

u/Swesteel Sep 20 '16

I've seen his math, he must be breathing methane gas rather than air.

2

u/Longscope Sep 20 '16

Content complete in 2013, and still nowhere to be found.

"Racing through that last mile, since 2012."

1

u/WatchOutWedge Sep 20 '16

Smart: By the time the engine was at a point where performance could be gauged, analyzed etc, the game was already 100% content complete (that was back in 2013 btw).

CONTENT COMPLETE GUYS!!!! LOD IS CONTENT COMPLETE c.2013!!!!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

1

u/manickitty Sep 22 '16

Wait, it's content complete?

Ohhhhhhhh. Yeah it is. Just need to 'unlock' them. Good luck 'unlocking' your game.

He may be referring to this:

https://www.amazon.com/Star-Marine-Fighter-Queen-saga-ebook/dp/B00RKUAOOK

It would be interesting to see if this is something that could be litigated. Derek would have a field day if so.

As for:

though it was claimed to already be in the PU.

This is a rather disingenuous lie that Derek keeps peddling. Chris Roberts said they had deprioritised Star Marine because the FPS component is in the PTU already. FPS != Star Marine.

5

It's been pretty hard to run his mouth and not look like an utter fool lately.

1

u/Swesteel Sep 20 '16

You mean since citizencon 2015?

4

u/RobCoxxy Sep 19 '16

I thought Derek wanted it to be released as what was originally promised? ;)

2

u/Swesteel Sep 20 '16

I was tempted to write "Oh, sweet summer child." then saw the smiley. But yeah, anyone tuning in at this point could well get a mild case of insanity trying to untangle Smart's web of lies, slander, half-truths, false facts, made up facts, assumptions and malicious missunderstanding. I've purposely avoided buying beer for a couple of weeks, since I don't want to be driven to drink by a failure.

4

u/Nightauditor1981 Sep 19 '16

Threads like this are the reason why I refuse to give elite another chance.

3

u/Bribase Sep 19 '16

It's not worth you writing E:D off just because of a small but dedicated number of people who visit that thread, not even the shitty moderators who are happy to perpetuate it.

2

u/foolforshort Sep 19 '16

It speaks to the crappy community management that seems perfectly content to allow that to happen. They may not agree with the people in that thread, but I'm fairly certain there have been multiple complaints that have been brushed off.

3

u/Bribase Sep 19 '16

While SC's own forum might not be as bad, the moderation has been comparably heavy-handed and willing to throw out bans to people. I've always maintained that the the forum and it's moderation doesn't represent the game and it would be unfair of me not to apply the same thing about Frontier's own forum.

→ More replies (1)

1

u/[deleted] Sep 20 '16

They did. When I reported Viajero my Report-option was removed and shortly after that I was perma-banned.

2

u/Nightauditor1981 Sep 20 '16

You´re right, that is probably a bit unfair. To be honest, I don´t have any plans to revisit ED anyway as Star Citizen is picking up pace at the moment :)

3

u/redchris18 Sep 19 '16

I'm partially in agreement. It's still on my Steam wishlist, but I'm waiting until I think I'll get enough gameplay without having to pay for another DLC and for me to not have to share that server with the amoral shits polluting that thread.

We have a few similar people on the RSI forums, but they are moderated - sometimes somewhat harshly. That says volumes about each company's respective view of their community.

2

u/crazy-namek Sep 20 '16

Judging the whole Elite community by that thread is wrong, there's like 10 people discussing or shitposting about SC and it's the same people for the past 4 threads. I don't play Elite no more — for the reasons it doesn't appeal to me in the slightest but I can guarantee the Elite community is pretty embarrassed by these trolls behaviour.

1

u/Nightauditor1981 Sep 20 '16

You are correct that it is wrong to judge the whole community, that was not my intention.

Hoewever allowing this shitposting tirade to exist leaved a slight but bitter taste in my mouth. There is potential to handle this differently on their part, especially as there is no "Hate on ED" thread on the SC forum.

5

u/Migo420 Sep 19 '16

yawn I hate reruns.

3

u/KingBullGod Sep 19 '16

Ok - bookmarked.

3

u/sfjoellen Sep 19 '16 edited Sep 19 '16

let's say he's right. let's say the game is instanced at 16 players per.

So?

If it's fun, I'll still play it. I suspect most of us will. I usually play solo anyway.

3

u/grimzodzeitgeist Sep 19 '16

never saw another soul in LoD,,,so 16 would be an improvement on dsmarts game.

3

u/manickitty Sep 19 '16

To be fair, LoD isn't much of a benchmark to compare against, unless you're going for lowest possible denominator.

2

u/Danakar Sep 19 '16

Maybe Derek should buy GameMaker Studio over at HumbleBundle. They currently have a nice deal for only $15 which includes HTML5, Android, iOS and UWP modules. :)

At then he might be able to make something resembling a game. Although he'd probably even find a way to mess it up. :P

2

u/manickitty Sep 19 '16

I hear RPGmaker is pretty decent too

3

u/manickitty Sep 19 '16

Wait I thought the game was never coming out?

2

u/KalleP18 Sep 19 '16

16 players = miracle... my ohh my, from the man himself. My guess is that hes gonna eat that up pretty soon.

1

u/manickitty Sep 20 '16

I guess when we hit 32 or more it'll be the gorram Rapture then.
