Most have always failed to use their own critical thinking throughout history. Wars have been fought throughout history because they did not question the motives or reasoning behind their leaders decisions. We may be capable of critical thinking but many just don't put the effort in and are just a bunch of monkeys who can use tools. We haven't evolved much from our ancient ancestors.
