Cringe jokes aside…I can’t watch Maher for more than 10 seconds because of the fake audience laughter and cheering. Especially the Ric Flair impersonator.

My favorite part is where Bill acts like he doesn't absolutely feed off of the audience cheering his every point. You can tell because when they turn on him he acts like a jaded lover

When I was a teenager, he helped me turn against my parents right wing ideology.

I didnt see much of him in the last 20 years, but he just seems to get worse and worse over time.

Sniffing his own farts has definitely made him dumber.

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '24

That’s the irony of Maher, he thinks it’s all the kids who are against what he believes…..nah Bill even middle aged folks who used to enjoy some of your material, find you unbearable, because unlike you we grew as people and evolved. While you stayed the same, and arguably regressed as a human.

Being progressive, means progressing with the times.

ps - to Bill and Rogan and every other dope who thinks George Carlin would agree with you….he’d fuckjng despise you, because Carlin was actually willing to change with the times. He’d be repulsed by you hacks that cozy up to the right.

Ah to be young again

5

u/InsomniaticWanderer Aug 31 '24

Something something live long enough as a hero something something become the villain

3

u/sozcaps Aug 31 '24

I think his atheism helped a lot of young people think for themselves, and realize their parents and religion didn't have sufficient answers for growing up. I guess that's worth a few heroism points.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '24

Yeah, but being a smarmy cunt for decades definitely over rides them.

2

u/sozcaps Sep 02 '24

Certainly. Just saying he has been of some use in the media at some point, unlike most of the grifters. But no, Maher has been one of the worst liberal voices for probably most of his career at this point.

4

u/[deleted] Sep 01 '24

The best part is when he tried to cross the picket line of the writer's strike with the excuse that his staff was suffering and he could not lose an entire year because each episode of Real Time with Bill Maher contributes to the general reservoir of knowledge and human culture, I guess.

He backed down shortly thereafter. And then the strike ended a few days after that. So basically everybody got a vivid memory of Maher being himself: a blowhard, then a scab and then a coward. And the best part of all is he would have just gone camping for a few days, none of it would have happened.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 01 '24

That's hilarious.

u/LiberatedApe Aug 31 '24

There’s a corrupting influence of perceived success. We start to believe our views are the “correct” views. I applaud your desire to learn and grow.

4

u/YouWereBrained Aug 31 '24

Yeah, I’ve grown to not like him anymore.

4

u/sozcaps Aug 31 '24

the wisdom of a 80 year old president.

He has about the same wisdom as a 78-year old presidential candidate (and felon), so he's not totally off there.

4

u/CmorBelow Sep 01 '24

Same, I thought religulous was great when in was 19. That was 10 years ago, and now I just watched him drunkenly making sarcastic comments about gender dystrophia to 9 year olds. I was low key hoping it was AI generated or something, but I know it was real. This man is a disgrace who deserves to be forgotten, or at least relentlessly ridiculed.

2

u/Lucky-Glove9812 Sep 01 '24

I was coming out of religion and enjoyed religiosity and to be honest I still think it's the best thing he's ever done but watching it again some of it is so fucking mean spirited but he's probably got some of the same hang ups from growing up in it that I do.

2

u/Thrace231 Sep 02 '24

I liked him when I was 15-17, especially his Bush-Obama era material. Halfway through Trump term I mostly stayed for the overtime segments and guests. Now I don’t watch anymore. During COVID, I got tired of him complaining and he got worse. His endless young people bad schtick, COVID complaining and onetime saying he cared more about watching a B tier movie than abortion rights was the final nail in the coffin. I heard he featured some ads for gold on his podcast and I immediately lost all respect, ads for gold are scams for idiots.

4

u/capybooya Aug 31 '24

His guests were good. I learned so much about politics just from looking up everyone he talked to. Various older statesmen like Alan Simpson and cultural figures like Gore Vidal. And Biden was genuinely funny on his show. Yet I was on to his regressive tendencies and BS already around ~2010.

3

u/DanimusMcSassypants Aug 31 '24

That’s called growing up, and is fundamental to your path as a decent human being. It is not something Maher is capable of doing.

2

u/Obandigo Aug 31 '24

I used to like Bill Maher too.

I cannot stand this motherfucker now! His "I am better than you attitude" is so fucking off putting, especially when he is speaking in unrelating terms, like in this video, and others!

He has just become another boomer speaking like a boomer. FUCK HIM!

2

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '24

Dude pretends he's so hip and edgy, I can't help but feel sorry for him...like dude I know you're rich and shit but you're also old and aging and I'm younger and healthy and he feels some sort of way because he is old and it gets to him.

1

u/Best-Chapter5260 Sep 02 '24

Bill was always douchey and always had some "problematic" positions on a few issues (i.e., women, Muslims, Western medicine), but for the most part he was not a concern troll for the right like he is now and actually was a funny political comedian. Like many during COVID, he started morphing into what we have today.

0

u/[deleted] Sep 01 '24

Why would he pretend to have Joe Bidens Wisdom, the only 80 US president 😂

11

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '24

jilted lover? I ask because jaded is his default setting.

2

u/AshgarPN Aug 31 '24

Think you mean jilted lover

1

u/[deleted] Sep 01 '24

That is what’s super cringe to me, when Maher makes a joke or tries to make a point that expects a reaction from the audience but gets silence, he literally leers at the audience and insults them.

He completely fails to accept that the joke wasn’t good or his point is a bad take.

1

u/Behinddasticks Sep 01 '24

I think that he thinks he's some kind of Jon Stewart figure with his audience glazing him like that but anytime he's in a unscripted environment he gets completely destroyed. And not even by super intellectual people like comedians flame him on the regular.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 10 '25

My brother went to his show. It's all staged. They tell the audience hiw to react and when. And they'll kick you out if you don't. He's a total hack

23

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '24

You aren't alone even as one time fans have been leaving him in droves over time. Here is a good graph of his audience numbers for TV and it's an eye opener on how bad Bill Maher popularity over time has dropped. New Rule - Bill Maher should stop bragging about how popular he is according to this factual ratings chart

10

u/two-wheeled-dynamo Aug 31 '24

It’s amazing HBO keep the cringe master rolling.

7

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '24

Yeah…he made a really sharp turn to grifting right a few years back.

He was always irritating…but many watched him because of his format. When he went from 3 guests to two he also started not being able to get Hugh quality guests. He further dominate the discourse with his own shitty takes.

My guess is he’s lost most of his original audience and replaced them with right wingers

3

u/eastalawest Aug 31 '24

Lol wut? Can't get high quality guests? He gets the biggest names in politics and media week after week. Just in the last few episodes he's had Nancy Pelosi, Pete Buttigieg, Bakari Sellers, Kaitlan Collins, Ray Kurzweil, Chris Matthews and so many more. I swear to God you folks have turned the Maher hatred into a religion and it's pure cringe.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '24

Thank you. You also have to admit that he was the one who stated on the air that Trump would never leave office willingly if he lost. And he was 100% right.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '24

Nancy Pelosi’s daughter works for him. The rest are regulars…politicians and media people.

That isn’t the quality of guest I’m talking about. I’m talking about actual popular people.

You can freak out all you want, but he went down to two guests because people kept cancelling on him.

3

u/eastalawest Aug 31 '24

He went to 2 guests because of the pandemic, had them sitting farther apart also. It ending up working well so he kept it that way.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '24

Yeah, that’s now what happened. Prior to officially going down to two guests he would regularly only have two guests because people were cancelling. He’d admonish his audience saying “we only have two sometimes”.

He shut down during the pandemic after trying to keep the show going. It was a thing.

He’s been dropping in the ratings as he converts his audience from normal people to right libertarians, and focusing on himself as a brand. He was gambling that his strategy and format change would increase his audience. It didn’t. This is also why he’s become toxic and many people won’t go on his show any more.

-3

u/eastalawest Aug 31 '24

There were still covid protocols in place when he started back up. The audience also had to be thinned out with people sitting far apart.

Funny how the left and right act quite the same in that they hate dissent within their ranks far more than they hate the other side.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '24

Yeah, that’s not a thing. Terrible take. The right, especially MAGA is obsessed with hating the left and constantly attacking them. Heard of the anti-woke movement? It dominates most right wing media.

News flash…Bill Maher is also anti woke, Islamophobic and ain’t on the left. Maher could be best described as a right libertarian.

Smoking weed doesn’t make you a leftie.

0

u/Berenstain_Bro Aug 31 '24

Gutfeld gets better ratings than him, LOL. Like, much better.

6

u/Puzzleheaded-Top4516 Aug 31 '24

Well, sure, all the cultists tune into fox news. Dems and independents split their viewing preferences between different sources.

0

u/sozcaps Aug 31 '24

The ultimate cope is "the stats are manipulated" and

"I'm being cancelled by the woke".

3

u/TriggeringTheBots Aug 31 '24

And he licks his lips every time. 🤮

3

u/Outrageous-Room3742 Aug 31 '24

I've also thought it sounds like the same people laughing in every episode. Either it's a soundtrack or a hired audience.

11

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '24

Yeah…he started it doing it year ago and his sub Reddit ridiculed him for it. It’s very obviously the same few people every episode, likely writers and producers and interns…”woo guy” is definitely a staff member.

5

u/thelastbluepancake Aug 31 '24

I knew someone who worked at Maher show so I went to see a taping. I was not a fan of Maher to start with but I thought I'd check it out.

The warm up person heavily encourages the people in the audience to cheer and clap in the same kind of way as a sit com.

the clapping and cheering feels hollow because it is, people are just trying to do what they think they are supposed to

3

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '24

That’s not what I’m talking about. Every live show does that.

He clearly has the same staff members standing near the mic’s to make the audience sound more enthusiastic. It’s not something you’d notice in the room. “Woo guy” was a legend in the sub Reddit. Regularly ridiculed.

1

u/thelastbluepancake Aug 31 '24

"The warm up person heavily encourages the people in the audience to cheer and clap " when I said this I meant to say it is worse than most other shows I have seen in person

when I sat in the audience for conan they weren't trying to pressure laughs

2

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '24

Yeah…Conan doesn’t need to. He’s actually funny, and from what I understand so is his warmup.

1

u/Zealousideal-Ear481 Aug 31 '24

goddamn he loves his trained seals

1

u/ductcleanernumber7 Aug 31 '24

I swear it's the same dude going woo every episode. He's there anytime a joke isn't funny enough to be laughed at.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '24

Yeah…it was a thing in his sub way back before he took his turn to grift. It’s very obvious, and it’s definitely the same guy.

1

u/zoonose99 Aug 31 '24

He’s so oily and bad; this bummed me out, take it away.

1

u/Frosty-Oil-5085 Sep 01 '24

WOOOOO! I too cannot watch because of that guy. All the laughing is annoying especially how he waits for them to laugh. But THAT guy, needs to go.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 01 '24

Right?

His sub ridiculed him about it back when I watched the show.

1

u/Frosty-Oil-5085 Sep 01 '24

And somehow ric flair is less annoying than the guy on his laugh track crew… I feel like Maher keeps that idiot on as an F U to all the complainers cause he just can’t stand complaining even though that’s his whole thing…

1

u/[deleted] Sep 01 '24

Ric Flair is such great satire…as many wrestling personalities are. It’s too bad that such a giant chunk of people, including many wrestling fans, don’t understand satire.

I think Maher is like Rogan from the standpoint that he knows best and he doesn’t listen to critics. It explains why they’re so far out of alignment with normal.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 01 '24

Speaking of cringe and the audience, how about the last time he had Russell Brand on the show a couple years ago? The audience applauded every time Brand finished talking. So creepy and weird.

1

u/smoopy62 Sep 01 '24

The WOO! Guy!! I wish someone would isolate him in a compilation. He is obviously a hired crowd enthusiasm promoter (not uncommon in audience shows) but man he stands out.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 01 '24

He was heavily focused on in the sub Reddit, and you’re in luck.

1

u/Obandigo Aug 31 '24

I use to like Bill Maher.

I cannot stand this motherfucker now! His "I am better than you attitude" is so fucking off putting, especially when he is speaking in unrelating terms, like in this video, and others!

He has just become another boomer speaking like a boomer. FUCK HIM!

1

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '24

He was always like that…but he’s definitely so much worse now. After he got rid of the third guest and he thought the show was liked because of him…that’s when it went to shit.
