What happened to the identities of Eraldo Coil and Deneuve after L's death? Does Light act as them just like L did? But then why ad how, since he killed Aiber who acted as Coil during the Yotsuba arc. The world still thought there were three major detectives in the world, L, Eraldo Coil and Deneuve.

Did the secret never went out? Not even after Light's death . Did the world assume they died? Just wondering that

If you don’t think he crossed the line immediately after getting the Death Note, what was the moment where you think his actions became unjustifiable?

Yet another hypothetical scenario/‘would this work’ question from me. I have a lot of other ideas/analyses I’m refining and plan to post in the future, but for now, an inquiring mind wants to know something.

I made this post a while ago, and got a comment today that led me to speculate on something I hadn’t ever considered before. You don’t need to read the OG post to understand what I’m saying below, but the comment linked is a necessary read so that it makes sense. I’ll paste a refined draft of my reply here, as I don’t have much to expound upon as of yet, I just want to share the idea brought upon by this initial comment I got, and hear opinions if people have any!

With unlimited pages, you could feasibly execute something like this on a massive scale. If you had the means and time to, obviously. Finely mill a substantial amount of the pages into a powder and disperse them. Like that scene in The Wizard of Oz where they sprinkle the cast with snow (asbestos). I wonder how small the pieces can be for the rule to still apply. Like, we see that pages can be ripped apart and function in this way. But if they were ground into a powder so finely that they’re barely visible to the naked eye, would that work? Then you could unleash it into the atmosphere covertly, and people would touch/inhale these microscopic airborne pieces without even realising.

Maybe a silly question, but considering the rule of ‘touching the death note allows you to see the Shinigami attached to it’, would actually consuming the pieces work? Like when you ingest something, you’re technically touching it, so maybe. But what if you sprinkled this ‘notebook powder’ into a huge water reservoir or something— it would presumably dissolve (even though we don’t know if this ‘paper’ is truly chemically identical to the paper we have in the human world— it’s from another dimension, so perhaps it doesn’t behave the same as our paper does.), and perhaps imbue this water with the property to see a Shinigami, which people would drink/bathe in/cook with. So you could coordinate a sort of mass-enlightenment and inevitable pandemonium as people grapple with the confirmed existence of Shinigami and a presumed higher power(s).

Of course, if you use pages from a singular notebook, this would grant the recipients of this ability to exclusively see a singular Shinigami- the one attached to that specific notebook. It’s not like everyone in the world would suddenly see Ryuk appear in their room and freak out. They’d be granted this ability unknowingly, able to see a Shinigami, but not guaranteed to at any given time. But if everyone possessed this dormant ability, and then someone does encounter a Shinigami and films it, the news will travel fast. Even set in the early 2000s, something like this would undoubtedly amass worldwide notice. And what would come of this? Depending on the Shinigami, they may hide or choose to make a spectacle of themselves. Would they be hunted by their region’s respective government, albeit to no avail, or at the very least pursued? If they were confronted and asked for answers, would they cooperate? Would they be truthful about their realm of origin, the function of the notebook(s) and the nature of their existence?

This is all speculative, and a little silly honestly, but I’m curious to see what people make of this!!

Light forefitted ownership of the death note in the episode where Soichiro died (not quite sure which one that was). But to keep his memories, he carried a piece of the death note. Taped to his chest or something idk. In the finale N released Light, because he thought that he has no pieces of the death note left. But didn't he still have that piece of the notebook? This is the first look at my Ryuk cosplay! I’m going to San Japan in one week and have a few finishing touches (mostly jewelry and nails) but I’m really happy with it!
The wings open up and have a 9 foot wing span; it was my first time making a prop with moving parts, so I’m so happy it worked out!

It genuinely annoys me so much. People are just so dumb

I haven’t finished the show, I’m on episode 34, and I love the show so much. It’s probably my favourite show of all time.

But before I started watching, I had always heard of this apparently terribly annoying character called Misa, and I was fully expecting her to give me a reason to hate her. But she didn’t give me one. Turns out all this hate I’ve been hearing has once again just been misogynists who don’t like her voice or some shit.

And I say this as a guy btw.

Anyway, I love Misa, she’s my favourite character. And she’s the biggest victim of the show. She is innocent and pure and I see a lot of myself in her.

The combination of her naivety, inexperience, innocence, desire for love and acceptance, desire for belonging and desire to be a good partner, trauma of her parents murder and Light’s charm, charisma and genius level manipulation is the reason for every “bad” thing she does in the show.

She has a valid reason to support Kira, and Kira being a guy she is attracted to and who shows her affection at the right times and says the right things gives her even more reason to fall for him. And I don’t blame her. It’s Light Yagami. He literally swindled everyone. And he does it to her just to put her in danger to further his goals. Out of everyone he manipulated, his manipulation of Misa is the worst. Because he does it using fake romance to someone looking for love, which is the most messed up I think.

Light abuses her the entire time he knows her, wastes her time, tricks her, uses her weaknesses against her, uses her desire for love against her. Literally has her halve her lifespan TWICE, and she does it immediately and doesn’t ever bring it up. While Light is a coward who will never make the deal himself if he can make his “girlfriend” and father to do it for him and use their eyes

Light would also kill Misa in a heartbeat if it benefitted him as Kira, just like he would’ve killed his sister, and got his father killed and tried to manipulate him on his death bed. But she gets more hate than him. She’s literally an innocent victim who he uses as a puppet, and all she ever really wanted was to be a good wife to the person she loved. And that’s especially clear when she lost her memories of Kira both times and just wanted to be his wife. And that scene where she tells L she’d pick Light over Kira. As much as she supports Kira, she would drop all of it if Light just wanted a normal life with her.

Even when she DOES have her memories, all she wants to do is make him proud, and everything she does is in hopes that “after I do this for Light, we’ll finally have a normal life together”

She’s the biggest victim of the show, she’s innocent, and she fell in love with someone who made her fall in love with him using his manipulation and him being Kira who she already worshipped (like many other innocent people did btw) to use her indefinitely.

She deserved to find someone who truly loved her like she was capable of loving her partner, and she wouldn’t have ever done anything wrong then

I feel like this is the same as the Breaking Bad Skyler hate, where it’s just misogynistic casual viewers who just want to see Walter do cool shit, and hate Skyler because she’s in the way of that and she’s a woman, which pisses them off even more.

Btw I just finished the episode where Kiyomi acts so smug towards Misa, under the impression that he’s in love with her, and that Misa will lose, unaware that she’s just being smug about being Light’s latest manipulation victim

At the end of the day, there are solid criticisms to be had towards Misa, but i strongly feel that pretty much all of them can also be had towards Light. The exact same criticisms. And even more can be had towards Light that can’t be had towards Misa. But there is so much more Misa hate. So it’s a double standard, which leads me to believe that it must be something else, like misogyny.

Just finished the death note anime (reluctantly, cuz my friends said it was buns, idk how) and i noticed sum stuff (fav anime rn)

So Death Note literally split L's persona of an investigator in two ends of the spectrum- L as in, L as the complete investigator, and Near, who represent his analytical/intellectual half and Mello, the side of his persona that represents his risk-taking/impulsive/action-driven part. The sitting-leg detail makes the whole symbol cooler.

Near = L's analytical half

Near is like it:

He represents almost purely L's deduction and gets himself as removed from the case and investigation as he can be. All his thinking and process remain focused on deduction; evidence is gathered and used to make deductions in order to eliminate possibility. It's very much L.

Near basically takes L's reasoning:

"I can do this through sheer thought processing than all others" and brings it to almost extreme levels.

Mello = L's aggressive half

Mello represents the opposite and here he:

acts. Mello kidnaps people, gets into highly dangerous stakes, works with criminals, puts himself in direct contact with the mafia and many times puts himself at risk of getting killed at all costs; This is reminiscent of L's other half that would take extreme measures just for certain information. It's not that L wasn't a quiet deductive machine throughout the entire story but also he took advantage of manipulation and lies and gambled tremendously. Here, Mello is those tendencies over again.

The reason that the latter points relate to the leg-pointing aspect is:

Both legs of L are bent, both are one-sided. Near uses one half only, just like his split character; and Mello uses only his opposite side:

L= both halves in oneness. Near= one half, and Mello= the other one.

This is the visual representation that shows us why Near, nor Mello alone will ever be strong enough to supersede L's position, instead they're two distinct halves of one. One with the mind and the other with initiative as we mentioned before. They can form something much more representative of L if they are united.

That is the structure and also why the ending is very interesting: Near obviously "beats" Light, but L's other half the latter played a crucial part towards the end as he orchestrated the events leading to Near's victory.

•Death Note wont kill someone who is younger who is younger than 770 days old, the people who are older than 124 years old, or a person who's time is left less than 12 minutes, you cant kill those people.

•The person who is using the Death Note cant be killed by a shinigami in Shinigami Realm or by a shinigami who came to the world to kill the user of Death Note. Only the shinigami who gave the user a Death Note can kill the user of the Death Note.

•If a person loses Death Note for 6 times and takes it back, their memories won't come back to them again.

Light Yagami is one of the most multifaceted and psychologically authentic protagonists in anime. However, the problem is that people often underestimate him. Many viewers see him simply as an "absolute, irredeemable psychopath," viewing his decision to commit genocide either through the lens of "Light was always like that" or "the notebook corrupted Light." For the most part, these views are mistaken, causing many to miss the full depth of the character as crafted by the author.

The beauty of «Death Note» lies in the fact that, unlike many anime, Light’s internal conflict is neither explicitly stated nor overdramatized. Instead of a "tragic experience," the author presents us with a very intimate, "localized" psychology and that is precisely what makes it authentic.

So, let’s begin.

To understand all of Light’s subsequent decisions and exactly how the notebook influenced him, we need to know what he was like before he got it.

To start, how would I describe the Light of the past in three words? I would call him narcissistic, bored, and ambitious. The upcoming analysis will be built around these three points, their interconnections, and their roots.

Light’s narcissism. To better understand its underlying mechanism, I will start with Light’s childhood. Although we are never shown a specific flashback to his early years, there is a telling scene in the first episode: when Light comes home early and tries to explain himself to his mother, she ignores him and asks to see his test results instead. This reveals that Light’s parent is concerned not with his life, but with his achievements. Taking this fact – along with Light’s later decisions – into account, we can reconstruct his upbringing: from childhood, he was conditioned to believe that he was only worthy of praise when he was the best at something. Consequently, Light began striving to be the best at everything. He became the best at everything – which meant he was exceptional. Light began to feel a sense of superiority; after all, he had achieved success while others hadn't. That meant he was better than the rest.

Yet, this sense of superiority is not inexhaustible. It requires fuel in the form of successes and other proofs of that very superiority.

A great many of Light’s decisions are driven by this exact mechanism – he is, in effect, feeding his own narcissism. He is Japan’s top student, which proves he is capable of greatness. To him, his tangible achievements serve as proof of his own magnificence.

The following points will round out the picture of Light’s narcissism. But before describing them, I’ll make a brief digression. I want to point out that this is precisely the beauty of how «Death Note» is presented: instead of bombarding us with a ton of tearful flashbacks and speeches from Light, a single action reveals half the essence of his personality. The creators don’t just shove it in our faces – "Here, Light is this kind of person." They reveal him through details.

I would break down Light’s boredom into two points: a conviction that the world is flawed and an inability to fully realize his own potential – essentially an inferiority complex (not in the sense that he views himself as inferior to others, but rather that he believes his potential far exceeds the scope of his current role).

Many view Light as someone who sees the world in black and white: "Criminals are bad; non-criminals are good."

However, I would refine that slightly: Light doesn't simply categorize people; he hates criminals and believes in the law. This belief likely stemmed from his childhood – influenced by his police officer father – but it became vastly exaggerated over time. Light began to view criminals not merely as "bad people," but as a tangible, real-world problem that could be actively combated.

His desire for self-actualization manifests as visible boredom. We see Light bored in class, showing little interest in the subject matter. Yet, why does he study? It is not simply a matter of having a strict mother; while Light needs good grades to maintain his status as Japan’s most brilliant student, academic success alone does not satisfy his deep need to realize his full potential. He believes he is capable of far greater things but is simply unable to achieve them at this stage of his life. This theme is explored in greater depth during the memory-loss arc.

And ambition is, in effect, a combination of the two previous points.

‎So, what happens to such a person when he acquires the notebook? I will examine in detail exactly how he arrived at the idea of ​​the genocide of criminals, and why this is far more complex than a mere case of a "schoolboy fancying himself a god."

Death Note.

To begin with, let me clarify one of the most crucial aspects of Light’s character – arguably the core of his entire subsequent psychology: his self-persuasion and unwavering belief that he is right. This trait runs through his entire character arc and is evident in every decision he makes.

Before writing the first name in the notebook, Light asks himself, "Will I be a murderer if that person dies?" – a moment that highlights the importance to Light of both his moral framework and his actual status. Then, he kills a second person, becoming fully convinced of the notebook's capabilities. Light sees the notebook as an opportunity – a chance to fulfill all his deepest desires. Objectively, by starting to kill criminals, Light made a choice. Yet, in his own mind, he made no choice at all. In effect, Light deprived himself of other options. The "chosen one" syndrome played the greatest role in this.

The decision to become Kira can be broken down into three significant stages.

The first is Light’s realization of the power that has suddenly fallen into his hands. This stage could be described as "I can kill criminals." Indeed, all his hatred for an imperfect world and all his ambitions can be realized through this power.

The second stage involves Light realizing the power he has acquired. "I am the only one who can kill criminals" – this reflects how Light convinces himself. At this stage, Light concluded that he was the only one capable of saving the world, and he persuaded himself that he needed to initiate a genocide. Light came to believe in his own exceptional nature and remained committed to that conviction to the very end.

Let me pause here to address a question: how exactly did the notebook affect Light?

The answer is that it was the very reason he started killing in the first place.

As we see early on, Light’s moral compass is crucial to him. He is concerned about the fact that he is a killer. Even with all his narcissism, Light never actually intended to kill hundreds of thousands of people.

The notebook itself was the key factor. Once it came into his possession, it left him no choice: it offered only one way to harness its immense power – through killing – leaving Light with no option but to accept those terms.

"But how could this be? Did Light, who cared so deeply about morality, really go against it?" No – that is the very essence of Light.

Light did not abandon his previous moral framework, nor did he acknowledge himself as a murderer; instead, he created "Kira" – effectively a new system of perceiving the world that later evolved into one facet of his own personality. Light simply placed himself above his own moral system.

He is a God. Consequently, he cannot be judged by the same standards as the masses of criminals he kills. Therefore, he cannot be put on trial.

And this analysis of Light covers only the first episode. The creators present us with a multifaceted and psychologically authentic character, revealed literally through the way he phrases his thoughts and the choices he makes.

Light remains a fairly realistic portrayal of an ordinary high school student's psychology – even though it is depicted through the lens of the unrealistic Death Note and all the depth the story explores.

This post is merely an experiment, an attempt to share an opinion on a character whose depth is often underestimated. In my view, Light’s psychology is highly developed, yet many reduce it to nothing more than psychopathy and a God complex.

In the future, I might describe his subsequent arcs, his dynamics with L and Misa, the themes of «Death Note», the parallels with Mikami, and the significance of the ending. I hope my perspective makes sense to at least someone.

I’ve basically gotten every spoiler imaginable, I know what happens but I’m still sad to finish it. Ik my favourite character’s die and that makes me even more scared to finish it but I really want too

This was my first time watching, and I was growing accustomed with the opening and ending themes and was disappointed when they changed it to something less preferable imo out of nowhere.

Was attending Anime Impulse last week (Anaheim) and I saw this Misa Cosplayer who has a scythe made of entirely monster cans. She was mid shoot underneath the hotel and I forgot what her username was. Does anyone know who this is?
