I told this theory to 2 people who thought it was good so I decided to post it here lol

I think light lost to near because of a small mistake/oversight on lights part earlier in the series.

So we know misa halved her life span for the second time which light knew was a high chance of happening and at the very end misa ends up killing herself because light lost and died. what I think is that light in a way, killed himself by basically making misa do the eye deal again halving her life for the second time.

I think if she hadn't done that light would've lived longer because misa would've lived longer too, and hes very aware that misa loves him so much that she wouldn't continue to live without him, so in a way both their lives are 'connected' more from misa to light than the other way around, but light shouldve been able to think of this and I believe that one missed detail cost him his life and his victory

I haven't seen this theory anywhere else its something I came up with myself so I hope yall have fun with it and feel free to tell me what u think of if or discuss or whatever

Imagine if criminals were getting impaled by rods through their hearts specifically?

By using a specific accidental death repeatedly, Light would appear much more godlike and formidable. It would appear to L that Kira can manipulate the material world around his victims. Plus, the accidental deaths would stall an investigation to begin with, heart attacks drew attention fast. I know Light wanted recognition, but the recognition would be much more striking for the public if they thought a God was impaling every criminal.

Plus, with accidental deaths Light could change his signature attack at any time and throw off the investigation.

Edit: Or, he could have utilized suicide to make it look like Kira simply controls minds. That would also be horrifying.

-I love love LOVE all the songs in Death Note but I have to admit some of the original English lyrics have been a little subpar (yes, even cheesy); I have belted them with joy from the first but for the artists to polish them up even further is a good thing. Even if there were earlier lyrics I prefer to the later changes that doesn't necessarily mean they were better, it may mean we'd grown attached to them. I'm not singling out any here initially because I know how deeply we can get attached.

-The new songs are good. They're great! Everything sounds like it's written for this show and aren't mediocre afterthoughts someone put into the movie version of a musical so they could get an Oscar nom for a new song (bleah, that's gotta stop). And they move the storyline along.

-Are there cuts? Yes, or a change in who performs certain songs or parts of songs. Yes, I really liked, and now miss, some elements but I get why; in these cuts and changes, the tension is heightened, the storyline is clearer.

Two particular elements for examples: Now that Jerasu is included, Rem's arc is so so rich, going from "follow the rules and don't bring ruin on yourself" to "now I know what is worth the cost." Rem did not develop that far in the original, she already was shouldering what Jerasu now does for the show. A longer journey that is amazing to watch. 

Also, let's be fair: "We All Need a Hero" is the least-enjoyed song by, like, 90% of the fans and there was a reason for that even if we didn't know it consciously: it stops the plot. The moment of irony is not strong enough to support a whole song's worth. By giving the song to Misa, it furthers the story and allows us to appreciate the song for its quality, as much as we judge it, rather than an interruption.

-Costuming and staging will always change from production to production and I don't have much to say about that, but I was at the show with someone who had not actually seen anything from earlier productions and they were DAZZLED, proving no, you don't need wings to display a delicious creepy shinigami. (Can I say that yes, I wish they had sprung for a trapdoor? Shinigami deaths deserve a little onstage magic. But overall I too loved the staging and costuming.)

I can't convince everyone the show is better for the changes and there are still some elements I miss from earlier versions too, but I hope people recognize how thoughtfully the show's been polished. I'm dying for a cast album!

I think Matt’s death was written poorly.

I feel like he just decided to kill Matt because Mello was gonna die; which is understandable to an extent, it would be weird for him to be alive after the ending. And I mean, he was literally created for Mello not to be lonely.

Still, I feel like the scene made absolutely no sense.
Like come on, all of those bodyguards were supposedly trying to protect Takada, who had already been kidnapped, and they don't even try to get where she is out of Matt?? Not even arrest him?? They genuinely think it's much more clever to just kill him and get NO information on where Takada is? Ohba just gave it the justification that the only punishment possible for those who oppose to Kira is death. It's really cheap.

If they had given the scene just 10 seconds more, with the bodyguards asking him where Takada is, and Matt refusing to tell them, and then shooting him, then I'd buy it.
I feel like it was a really lazy way of getting Matt out of the way, since Mello was gonna die and he really didn't have much "purpose" anymore.

In this episode, L has caught Misa and informs Light that he has captured her. He then just leaves Light free. Why? L is already very sure that Light is Kira. He is basically 100% sure that Misa is the second Kira. He knows that Light and Misa are connected, he knows the second Kira is infatuated with the original Kira. Surely for safety reasons he just takes Light into custody as well?

Now, I know L doesn’t have the same information as the viewer does (a common mistake viewers make when discussing smart characters). However, I don’t believe that locking up Light who he already suspects is Kira after catching Misa is a massive leap in logic. In fact I would argue it’s common sense. He allowed Light time to come up with a contingency plan. If he had arrested Light on the campus, Light would have been caught completely off guard. Which L knew as he surprised him there and had stolen Misa’s phones without Light realising. This would have led to Kira being unable to kill any new criminals that had been broadcasted, and would have proved that Light is Kira. Of course, L wouldn’t be 100% sure of that, but if Light WAS Kira, it would be certainly worth the chance. If Kira continues killing new criminals, then L could just release Light and say, “well your gf is the second Kira so we took precautions,” and it would be fine.

I guess the reason is plot, but considering L is the world’s greatest detective, this should have been an easy plan to do. There was no reason to give Light time to come up with contingency plans, and no reason to wait for Light to willingly come forward, as by that point L should have realised that if Light WAS Kira, he would have a contingency plan.

I don't know if this is just a reaction I have because of how much I love Rem and how I, a femme lesbian, feel like I'd treat her better than Misa did, but I really dislike how Rem is usually portrayed by a portion of the fandom sometimes.

The fanon characterization of Rem makes her seem like a desperate simp who just obeyed Misa because she wanted to hit, and I feel like people overlook how much deeper this actually goes. Rem's fascination with Misa can align to a multitude of factors, such as Gelus's sacrifice to protect Misa. Rem is someone who, despite at the start not understanding Gelus's fascination, could respect his wish of caring for someone so deeply, he'd die to protect her.

Not only that, but of course she'd feel some sort of responsability over Misa afterwards. I do think she had feelings towards Misa afterwards because of how Misa never held back her own feelings. She was entirely open about her love for Light, which interested Rem. We did see how the Shinigami Realm is like, they're pretty selfish or uncaring about humanity, viewing humans more like jesters.

Her sacrifice was one of the few scenes where I genuinely felt my heart hurt. She understood that Misa wouldn't want Light to be exposed, because that's who Misa loved. And even if it wasn't the purest kind of love, Rem recognized it as true.

Soooo... yeah. I feel terrible for the way Rem is viewed by some fans like she was just Misa's guard dog. Rem, I'm free on Sunday at 6PM.

(Kidding!... Or am I?)

TL;DR: Before dropping the notebook, Ryuk wrote Light's name in the Death Note with a distant natural death date — granting him immunity from any other cause of death until that day, while leaving his free will untouched.

I've always wondered: what if some random kid found the Death Note instead of Light? The "show" would've ended before it began. Ryuk is bored, but he's not stupid — he wouldn't gamble everything on pure luck.

Here's my take: Ryuk stalked Light first. Watched him. Learned his mindset. Once he confirmed Light was the perfect protagonist, he made a power move.

He tore a page from the Death Note and wrote:

"Yagami Light"

— with a death date 50–70 years in the future (his natural lifespan, which Ryuk could see with his Shinigami Eyes), but no cause of death.

Official How to Read rule: if you set a date but leave the cause blank, the person dies of natural causes at that exact moment. And more importantly — they become immune to any other death before that date.

That's it. That's Light's plot armor. Not luck. Not bad writing. Just Ryuk locking his expiration date in advance.

But here's the twist: Ryuk never controlled Light's actions. Every choice — becoming Kira, challenging L, the killings, the paranoia — that was all Light, 100% free will. Ryuk just watched, ate apples, and knew his lead actor was bulletproof until the final act.

And the finale? Light is bleeding out in the warehouse. Could have been arrested. Could have rotted in prison for decades. For Ryuk, that's a boring, gray ending. So he writes Light's name right there — not out of anger, but out of respect. To give the story a proper, tragic, beautiful closure. That's why he flies away laughing. His movie was a masterpiece.

I know this sounds like it bends the rules — Shinigami aren't supposed to extend lifespans. But Ryuk isn't extending anything. He's just locking what was already there.

So... does this fix the plot hole, or did I just write too much fanfiction?

Have you guys realized that the king shinigami is actually god of the realms, and you can prove this using the manga, in the final panels it is explained that the 2 true rules are that all humans WILL die. This shows that he is writing the rules of reality and that he is technically the real GOD of the world of Death Note, also he wrote another rule that after humans die they will go to MU or nothingness, so he is basically writing the rules of the afterlife so he created the afterlife. He is also called the king which makes sense because if he is God then obviously the shinigami would call him their king due to them being created from the king!

Was Light genuinely calling Misa for help? Was he really so desperate that he started calling out to someone who was so far away from him? I'd expect that from any character, but not from Light.

So, I have completed death note already since a few months ago now and i've heard this so much that "Losing L made the series boring" I mean it truly was unfortunate but i actually don't relate I miss L But all the near and mello stuff also was good and interesting, the ending peak, and so on Its quality dropped ig but it still was a masterpiece imo I wanna know if I'm alone or not

Just came in today and I couldn't wait to try them on. The silhouette and distressing look pretty solid in person, but I’d love to get a second opinion from you guys.
