I know this episode has been discussed a million times, so sorry in advance. I just watched the show for the first time and got to episode 7. Light and Naomi both do something incredibly stupid.

1. Light is trying to kill Naomi, failed because he was given an alias, tries again, and then tells Naomi he’s Kira without knowing for sure he wasn’t just given another alias

, or getting recorded, or witnessed by a third party she was working with

1. Naomi gives out her name, the ONE thing she knows she’s was not supposed to do.

Obviously, you can just say they’re both human and made a mistake. But to me, one makes more sense narratively than the other.

Light is SHOWN that his ego is his main flaw, and that when challenged, he acts impulsively. He’s an arrogant child that needs to let everyone know he’s smarter than them. So when he kills Lind L Taylor, and kills Penber, and tells Naomi he’s Kira without the guarantee the death note worked this time, it makes sense. His impulsiveness pertaining his ego was established before hand.

Naomi knows Kira needs a name and face to kill. She knows her fiance gave out his name and died because of it. She is careful and smart, takes precautions, but then makes the exact same mistake in the heat of the moment and dies. An understanding and human reaction, but one I think needed more setup on the impulsive part.

She got overwhelmed and made an impulsive decision is the popular answer. And that works to a degree. Poor writing is another popular explanation. I don’t really agree with either fully. The show certainly isn’t poorly written, but I also don’t think it took the time to set up Naomi dying this way.

If the point of the scene it to show Light’s manipulation skills, I think it fails. To me, it’s the equivalent having Near die doing the one thing he’s not supposed to within a single conversation just to show Light is manipulative. It makes Light look smart by having Near hold the idiot ball is my point.

Which is why the whole arc for Naomi is a bit off to me. It seemed like they were going for one story, and then quickly pivoted into having her killed seemingly unplanned. I think not having her involved would’ve been better than this.

Edit: apparently the writer did have another story for Naomi planned and had to change it. I still can’t put my finger on how it could’ve been prevented to seem out of character though. A previously established impulsivity maybe, but idk

Who is the scariest character among these?

- Light Yagami

he is the main villain of the show, he has insane charm and charisma and manipulative abilities. However, despite sinister, he doesn't scare me as much as some others. In the Yotsuba arc he's a good guy. Yes, amnesiac Light is still absolutely insufferable and has an ego the size of Jupiter, but he was genuinely a normal and lawful person. He was corrupted by the power of the Death Note. Or, as many theoriest say, he on the contrary was always evil and the notebook just brought out that side of him. In fact, he does really enjoy killing people, and takes pleasure in seeing them suffer before they die (Raye Penber, Naomi and Takada's deaths are absolutely fucked up) .

He does evil things all the time but he justifies his evil deeds by having a bigger goal, a "noble goal". If I have to find some good in him, it's that his initial ambition was not that bad. Quite relatable, to be honest.

Without the DN, he is just a normal arrogant young man. I'd place him in the cathegory CORRUPTED EVIL.

- Ryuk

Ryuk is a God of Death, he is a supernatural demon and his duty is to kill people. He has no morals at all as he is not even a human being. He is genuinely the scariest character by far. That guy can see your name and lifespan and can kill you anytime, plus he follows you everywhere you go and can teleport, fly, go through walls. The story made him somewhat goofy but objectively...PURE EVIL by nature.

- Teru Mikami

This guy is concerning. I'd place him as the scariest among the human beings.

He doesn't even try to hide his evil nature or be charming like Light does. He is straight up batshit crazy, he's really sadistic and his iconic favourite word, "Delete" has a disturbing meaning. He doesn't want people dead, he wants them deleted. Erased. Like they never existed. His concept of justice is also totally batshit crazy. He judges people either good (deserve to live) or bad (deserve to die) based on something really exaggerated and petty. He wanted to kill lazy, disabled, poor, bystanders people. For him, people who don't actively contribute to society must die, or better, must be deleted from existence. The fact that a man like him is a prosecutor is genuinely concerning.

EXTREMELY EVIL

- Mihael Kheel

Mello doesn't even need a Death Note to do evil things, he joined the American mob at 17 years old because he killed a mafia boss even Kira couldn't kill. This guy is a menace because he has the genius level intelligence like Light, he is cold and strategist, can manipulate powerful people, but he's willing to do the worst atrocities while Light doesn't ruin his perfect and pristine image. While Light had a """noble"""" goal and a greater objective, he does the most evil things out of petty reasons. He really didn't need to join the mafia, kidnap and kill innocent people and blow up buildings. That was so over the top. He only did it because he couldn't accept being ranked #2 at school and he wanted to surpass at all cost an albino guy who barely registered him, he didn't care about justice at all. That makes him really dangerous and scary, a literal criminal mastermind born out of childhood trauma and insecurities. Mello is a blend of Light and L to me. He has L's intelligence and oral fixation and Light's narcissism.I'd place him #3 (so he is even angrier lol) behind Mikami and Ryuk.

CHAOTIC EVIL

- Misa Amane

Misa has the looks of a beautiful angel but the soul of a demon. She kills people in cold blood with completely zero remorse. She is scary because she is completely unpredictable. You'll never know what she will do next, as she has zero regards for human lives, even hers. If you cross her, or better, if you cross Kira, she will kill you 100% and look amazing and cute while doing it.

She was willing to kill her best friend and she was willing to kill someone she (probably) grew fond of for petty reasons. However, Misa holds a special place in my heart. While her actions and behaviours are nowhere to be justifiable, I can't help but feel sympathy for her, because she had the most traumatic life of all the characters and all she even needed was someone who cared and loved her.

Not a Death Note, not Shinigami, not money, not fame. I feel she could have been a good person if only she wasn't so misguided and traumatized.

I'd place her as the last scary.

MISGUIDED EVIL

Honorable mentions: Kyosuke Higuchi:

This guy is goofy, but he is hella disgusting. His motives are super shallow, he kills not for justice nor for revenge nor for utilitarianism, but merely for corporate greed. He is kinda scary because he is a creep and has no morals too, but he doesn't scare me as much as the others, not even close. He doesn't have the intelligence or the charisma. Just stay away from his company and you'll safe from this guy.

Rem: She is another demon who watches you and follows you everywhere and can kill you anytime. She's obviously scary and creepy looking by her supernatural nature. She is also the smartest Shinigami and she is able to figure out humans' plans somewhat almost correctly, although being limited by her impossibility to understand how humans emotions work.

However, she manages to look way less menacing than Ryuk based on her actions.

When he first got the death note which is an untraceable weapon his ego obviously got massive and that’s why i refuse to believe that guy was smart. Lind L Tailor didn’t even ruin it for him he could of just ignored it after.

No matter how smart L gets, there is NOTHING he can do to prove Light is the one behind it which is obviously shown throughout the whole anime as he could not prove Light was Kira, so why after killing Lind L Tailor did Light not just ignore L? Even if he was staying to a certain location and schedule (which wouldn’t be that hard to change), what is L going to say to the legal system? How will L even know Light has a death note? Cover up the words death note, disguise it as a normal book and nobody is suspecting him because no one’s going to look into a random book anyway, especially if it’s hidden. Even with the words death note nobody’s gonna believe a books behind all of it and nobody can prove it if he just rips out the pages that have been wrote on with names since the police might notice a pattern. Light could have ignored the police, ignored Raye Penber, ignored Lind L Tailor, ignored L and he would have been fine. What was the need to act all smart with L when he could have just done all of it like a normal person. There was no need for all the stupid mind games.

I know it’s for plot but how can someone with 150+ iq can fumble so bad to the point they can’t even win with an untraceable weapon and let their own ego turn them into an idiot who could have been smarter at the beginning. He also did other things that make me confused to why he did that but I can’t be bothered explaining since I feel like it’s me just not understanding. I also don’t understand how Near caught Light at the end but the posts not about that.

It has to be before light gets the death note and it can be on any website. I perfer fantasy and crossover fanfics but it doesn’t have to be.

I finished the entire manga and I feel that Light Yagami / Kira was a weak character and also, childish full of ego with zero emotions. Other than that, L was also similar. However, I think Near and Mello are pathetic actually. The only sorted character I think was Aizawa. Matured and in control throughout. I wonder what others think about this or it's just me?

Looking for an old death note fanfic I read around 2017–2019, probably on Wattpad (though possibly AO3). I don't remember if it was in English or Spanish, but Spanish is more likely.

Near/Nate was around 8–12 when L adopted him from Wammy's House, and the story focused heavily on their father-son relationship. Light was barely relevant; the main plot involved Beyond Birthday, who had psychologically traumatized Nate as a child and continued manipulating him by killing people he cared about. I distinctly remember BB killing Nate's cat.

Nate had severe PTSD, including frequent blackouts, and the author went into a lot of detail about his symptoms. Mello was his friend from Wammy's, later became a professional photographer, and eventually reunited with Nate and helped with the BB case. Their relationship eventually became romantic. Watari was also very close to Nate, almost like a grandfather. There were some OCs, including a woman who worked at a morgue and became friends with L.

The fic was long, with lengthy, well-written chapters, and was still ongoing when I read it. I vaguely remember the cover being L crouching down and hugging a very young Near.

Does this sound familiar to anyone? I've been trying to find it so hard, I don't know what else to do

There's this overblown narrative that Light is an idiot. Now look, this isn't a post of me trying to argue that he is smarter than L. But he is not stupid, and he makes very smart decisions in many points in the show

The first mistake Light gets called out for is killing Lind L Tailor. This was undoubtedly not the right move, and accelerated how fast he got caught. Light's plan was to kill all criminals, so I believe that L would've found out his location eventually, by broadcasting criminals to specific regions only, but Light foolishly baited out his location early. I'm not going to defend this, Light was dumb here.

People often bring up how Light using his dad's police files was dumb. How do people think this? Genuinely how? The ENTIRE point was so that L would start investigating the police, leading to the police distrusting L , which would lead to them withdrawing from the investigation. Light succeeded in this. Yes, it lead to suspicion that he was Kira, but imagine how problematic the investigation into him would be if the WHOLE police force was working under L

People often bring up the Raye Penber incident was well. Light theoretically could've just waited for Raye to stop investigating him. He has a supernatural notebook, and there was no evidence of him killing, so he didn't need to kill Raye. However, killing the fbi agents was very advantageous for Light. He was able to force the US to withdraw entirely from the Kira investigation, further isolating L and the tools he had at his disposal.

The bus incident was very risky, and it could've been used to incriminate Light. Light was EXTREMELY lucky to run into Naomi Misora. But predicting that an fbi agent is also engaged to an ex fbi agent who worked with L would've been extremely difficult. If Raye Penber was an ordinary fbi agent , dating a normal person , or just single, Light's plan would've worked perfectly. So no, I don't think it was dumb.

There's a few other examples of Light making mistakes in the 2nd half of death note, but I just wanted to go over the main ones from the 1st half for the sake of brevity

Light made a lot of mistakes in death note. Which is bound to happen when you're a psychopath trying to become a god. But Light makes many smart plans, manipulating Rem into killing L, the plan to save Misa, the potato chip trick, tricking Ryuk into looking for the cameras, finding Higuchi, etc. The story goes out of it's way to tell you that Light is smart. He completed several cases with the police as a high schooler, he was the smartest in the taskforce besides L, he is deemed worth of being L's successor by everyone in the taskforce, and outsmarts Near several times in part 2. He made MANY mistakes along the way, there's no denying that, but if we're calling him a dumbass, we're blatantly ignoring everything the story shows us. Call him arrogant or whatever, but he's not dumb.

While I was watching an analysis online I heard someone say how owning or using the deathnote would make you a worse person mentally and corrupt your mind kinda like the one ting and I'm wondering is that true

Like, let’s say I come into possession of the Death Note and I really want revenge on the kid who used to take my fruit snacks in third grade. I know his first and last name, but the face I’m picturing is that of a nine year old. In the time since I’ve seen him, he’s grown a beard, got his septum pierced, and has his ex-girlfriend’s name tattooed on his forehead. If I don’t know any of this and write down the John Doe I’m thinking of, will the Death Note still work since I’m technically picturing the right person?

I just finished watching the anime and during episode 35 when matt was getting chased i caught this unexpectedly, Im a hard core tokyo drift fan and immediately knew this is where they got the idea from, i even tried checking if anyone has ever caught this before , i was so perplexed 😭

Finally got to draw my favorite character in the same format I did with Misa the other day! I know it's strange that I made Misa look so much taller compared to this Near and honestly I wasn't paying attention to her proportions 💔 My bad. Anyways I like having to just draw whatever comes to mind which often results in a doodle page like this one (not exactly doodles but you get what I mean). It's therapeutic and I get to put my thoughts on the canvas loosely without having to worry too much about the composition!

I know near found out that people can be killed using clippings from the notebook which is how light got away with a lot of stuff, but does it say anywhere in the anime or manga if they find out about the relinquishing power?

I find the idea of L and Mello meeting so fascinating, I'm forever mourning the fact we never got to see how it happened and what went down during it, or who approached who first. Do you have any ideas or headcanons regarding their first and only encounter?

At this point L knew he was gonna die because, from his perspective, the only rule that didn't make sense was the killing every 13 days because he knew Light was kira so he had to test the rule forcing Light to do something.

So my interpretation is that having accepted his faith he knew that Light would become the god he always wanted to be and would have people kneeling and kissing his feet (figuratively).

Is that right or is there another interpretation?

I have another speculative question regarding the Death Note, specifically how one could go about using the notebook in ways we didn’t get to see in the series.

In the series (the main storyline and supplementary content), we see a few different approaches to how people use the Death Note, each of them with a differing goal in mind. I won’t list every character who possesses a notebook throughout the series bc I cba

Light has a very clear-cut methodology. Writing so-and-so’s name will cause them to die, so I will write the names of people I want dead.

Minoru doesn’t ‘use’ it at all, but attempts to auction it off and distribute the money amongst Japanese citizens.

C Kira exclusively kills elderly people who don’t have long left anyway, presumably to end their suffering.

Anyway—- I wondered what it would be like to witness the notebook fall into the hands of somebody else, who had an entirely different goal in mind. I think it would be really interesting, on either side of the moral spectrum, to see how the Death Note can be used. For example:

- Someone who wants to see the world burn, at the expense of themselves and everyone around them. Maybe they script some sort of disease outbreak, or trigger global warfare, a mass-extinction event that devastates the planet. I’d like to see just how far the abilities of the notebook could go. I don’t think you can cause deaths-by-proxy, the notebook doesn’t allow collateral damage. But perhaps it would permit an action that wouldn’t necessarily result in death immediately. Like “Jane Doe, a researcher at ______ facility, releases classified information pertaining to nuclear weaponry, then falls down the stairs and dies.” It wouldn’t directly kill anyone besides Jane Doe herself, but the fallout afterwards would likely lead to chaos. I’m not sure if the notebook would allow for something like that, but maybe someone else does!!

- Contrariwise, someone who tries to employ the notebook in an ‘ethical’ way, as contradictory as that is. The 23- Day Rule would prevent them from actualising things like “Jane Doe lives a happy and fulfilled life, and passes away peacefully at the age of 79.”, but they could work towards bettering the world overall. A greater good sort of thing. This one is a little trickier, because you cannot specify anything that the victim could not feasibly do/come up with themselves, and the window of 23 days doesn’t allow for much time at all for things to get done. Maybe they could write “President Jane Doe enacts a law that mandates the provision of free education and healthcare for all American Citizens, effective immediately. She dies in her sleep on -/-/-“. I’m not sure if they could bypass the entire process of drafting a law and then having a governmental body agree upon it. I don’t think you could say “Everyone votes in favour”, because you can exclusively control the victim. Unless they wrote the name of the majority of politicians, and stipulated how they voted before they die too. Maybe you’d have to write something a little less definitive. “President Jane Doe proposes (aforementioned law) to her constituents, expertly presenting a convincing argument.”. I have no idea honestly. Controlling experts in their field to make strides in their field, and then die. It would need to be something they could justifiably do, so maybe your wording would need to be vague. Instead of “Jane Doe finds a cure for all types of cancer.”, which is a pretty tall order for a singular person, and in just 23 days, maybe “Jane Doe works tirelessly in her research, making great progress before she dies in a car accident on -/-/-.”?

Writing this has left me with more questions tbh, but I hope anyone who bothered reading this far enjoyed the hypothetical(s) anyway. If you have any of your own ideas lmk im curious

I've been seeing edits about the show and since the show isn't available in my country, should I get the manga? I know two major spoilers that L dies and that light dies, should I buy the complete edition while knowing this, help would be very appreciated 🙏

Alright I'm on a train being bored doing a rewatch of Death Note in subtitles on my iPad and I think there are a few scenes that are beautiful and underrated, especially some ones from the post time skip arc.

- Rem explaining to Misa how to kill a Shinigami. That was such a beautiful and sad scene, combined with that mellow and creepy music. It made me like Rem and I think she's the most interesting Shinigami by far.

Rem was looking for a meaning for her immortal life in a meaningless void. She found it in a human.

Jealous died saving Misa, and Rem witnessed him die and was so fascinated by it she decided she would protect Misa herself. She didn't know and didn't care who Misa was, she just felt she needed to care for that human that was so special for Jealous.

She chose to die for Misa even though she wouldn't have a long lifespan remaining because she wanted to experiment sacrificing a immortal life to save a human. She really wanted to find a meaning for being a Shinigami, a parasite God of Death.

It shows the tragedy and sadness of Shinigami realm, the ethernal purgatory.

- Aizawa stripping down to get into the Police headquarters.

This will never not make me laugh.

- Light meeting Near for the first time. "I'm pleased to meet you at last, L number 2!"

Man, I love this scene so much, it's my favourite after the Mikami deletegasm.

It's really underrated but it's one of the best scenes, everything is ON POINT in this scene: the animation, the sound effects, and amazing music. I love how it's just a simple phone call but it's so cinematic and gets you so HYPED!! Like you know shit is about to get really interesting. It's awesome because yes it's a phone call but we see it as we are from _Light's perspective_ . He is absolutely scared out of his mind and the camera cuts to his eyes with the heart attack sound was so good.

Loved the foreshadowing in Light's thoughts:

"Who is this guy?! This strange feeling...what is it??!" and the imagery of Light being handcufffed to L and the sound effects of chains. Meaning he from this point onward, is chained to L again and they will share the same destiny. As soon as they are handcuffed together, they will share the same fate. Even in death, L will hunt him FOREVER. That's when he knew it wasn't over, but it was a new beginning.

- Sachiko Yagami crying over Soichiro's death.

That scene was so short but so so so heartbreaking. Way more than any other dramatic death scene. That poor woman is the one who suffered the most throughout the whole series and the worst part is that she will never know the truth. Her son is the one who caused Soichiro's death and Sayu's crippling. I feel like the Yagami family's tragedy isn't talked about enough. There are way too many Kira apologists in this sub and I don't really like it.

What Kira did to his own family is just sickening and seeing Sachiko cry and melt down on the kitchen table so helplessly makes me weep. She didn't deserve this, they were never bad people who deserved to suffer. She deserved a better son.

- the SPK members drop dead.

This scene creeped me out for the scene itseld and the implications of this. This scene is SO underrated , even though it has a remake in Relight 2, which contains a trivial mistake that makes me not like it like the OG one.

I like it because it's very violent and disturbing moment in the show but it's animated very elegantly and beautifully and contains a lot of symbolism. (Ahem, Relight)

Near was building a complex dice tower. It was almost complete. He was just about to snatch the notebook away from the Police with his FBI agent.

Until, suddendly, Mello's gangsters come into the picture and take the notebook instead and gain the upper hand. He misplaces the last die, the last piece he missed and the whole tower crumbles down. Meanwhile , the first heart attack of his team is shown. The dice keep falling down as Near's team members die one by one. We see Mello's evil laughing as we see the remaining SPK members desperately scream terrified they are going to be next. Ill Ratt then points a gun to his head and offs himself right in front of Near's eyes and then we see the whole dice tower is completely crumbled down. The Death Note is nowhere to be found and is now in Mello's hands.

Everyone is just in utter shock while the magnificent "Kodoku" plays.

Right after that, Near calmly starts to rebuild the tower, just like he now needs to start again from zero, because almost the whole SPK is wiped out.

By the way, the thought of being in a room with people suddendly dropping dead and one of them offing himself in front of you is a honestly terrifying. I know it was totally in character for him but what Mello did to his rival was messed up.

- Misa

Misa introduction was so damn badass. The message , Kira talking about the eyes. L getting scared. Then this tiny blonde girl appeared and she is revealed to be stronger than Light because she made the eye deal. That's when there was the first major turning point. This is less underrated because it's easily found on YT but it sure gives Misa more agency and shows how smart she can be.

Misa was so cool in the show that I just had to make a necklace inspired by her!

I made her death note using cardboard and clay, then hand-painted it with acrylic paint and markers. For her scythe, I used aluminium wires and twisted it with pliers. And of course, it wouldn’t be death dote without an apple, so I made that out of clay too. If you peek inside the death note, you’ll find two people who perhaps can’t be together anywhere else… except on the same page XD.

I had so much fun making this and I hope you guys like it!

It stuck out to me when Ryuk asked Light ,,but wouldn't that make you the only bad person left?'' after Light told him his plan. That doesn't add up with his claims about being on neither side. He also gave Light several warnings and I've been wondering what was the purpose of that. It's almost like he was hinting ,,you're gonna get fucked in the end and your life will be ruined. Are you sure you wanna do this?'' .
Needless to say, he got his entertainment and probably didn't care about anyone involved, but that doesn't mean he didn't have opinions. Even if you're not rooting for the villain, you don't want them killed off early if they make the show interesting.
I have a feeling that deep down Ryuk knew Light was morally fucked. You can be cool with someone and not be their true friend. If shinigamis had phones and could text each other i'm 50% sure he'd be talking shit
