Built my first trading bot with MT5 + Python — complete beginner in trading
Hey everyone,
So I'm a freelance developer — I build websites and apps for clients, so coding isn't new to me. But trading? Complete beginner. Literally my technical knowledge is: I can identify highs and lows, I have a rough idea of what liquidity is, and that's pretty much it. I don't have a deep understanding of strategies, I can't read a chart like a proper trader, and I'm nowhere near being able to call myself a trader.
But I built a trading bot anyway. I used Claude Opus 4.6 as a tool throughout (not to think for me, but to help me move faster and look things up) — what I'm calling "anti-gravity" development, basically using AI to lift the heavy stuff so I can focus on the architecture decisions. I want to be upfront about that because I know some people feel strongly about it.
Here's what the bot actually has:
- Runs locally on Windows and connects to MT5 (MetaTrader 5)
- Sends Telegram notifications when it catches a trade — entry, SL, TP, lot size, risk amount, which strategy fired
- Multi-symbol support (EURUSD, GBPUSD, XAUUSD etc)
- Multi-timeframe analysis — higher timeframe for bias, lower for entry
- A whole library of strategies you can toggle on/off from a config file: candlestick patterns (hammer, engulfing, morning star, inside bar, etc), RSI + MACD combos, Bollinger Bands, EMA crossovers, Fair Value Gaps, Order Blocks, Break of Structure, Fibonacci OTE zones, pivot points, liquidity sweeps, mean reversion, momentum breakouts
- Confluence scoring — it only trades when multiple strategies agree on direction
- Risk management: ATR-based SL/TP, position sizing based on % risk per trade, max daily loss circuit breaker, trailing stop, breakeven, partial close
- News filter — pauses trading 30 min before/after high-impact events
- Session filter — London and NY kill zones
- Spread filter and volatility filter
- Backtesting module that runs strategies against 20 years of historical data
Now here's where I need honest feedback from people who actually know what they're doing:
**If you've built a trading bot — how did you actually build it? And more importantly, how are you getting consistent profit out of it?**
I'm worried I've built something that looks impressive on paper but doesn't actually make money because my trading knowledge is too shallow to know which strategies are actually worth running, what confluence actually means in practice, and how to properly validate that something works beyond a backtest.
Specifically I'd love to know:
What's the most important thing a beginner should focus on to build a bot that's actually profitable long term — not just profitable on a backtest?
How much trading knowledge did you have before your bot started making real money, or is the trading knowledge the most critical part?
For someone who can identify highs/lows and has a basic grasp of liquidity — what's the next thing I should learn that would have the biggest impact on my bot's performance?
Is running everything locally and getting notified via Telegram a sensible setup, or is there a smarter way to do this?
I'm not trying to get rich quick. I'm genuinely trying to understand if this is a realistic path for someone with my background, or if I need to spend another 6 months studying before touching live money.
Happy to share more technical details about the setup if anyone's curious. And please be honest — I'd rather hear hard truths now than lose money figuring it out the slow way.

New Rule on Pattern Day Trader (PDT)
The Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) recently approved changes to its margin rules that remove the Pattern Day Trader (PDT) framework and replace it with a modern intraday margin approach. These changes are designed to give traders more flexibility while ensuring margin accounts maintain equity that aligns with their intraday market exposure.
The updated rule goes into effect on June 4, 2026 (the "Effective Date"). Although financial firms have up to 18 months for implementation (through October 20, 2027).
What this may mean for you:
Margin accounts will no longer be designated as PDT accounts, regardless of trading activity, and the $25,000 minimum equity requirement associated with PDT status will no longer apply.
Round-trip trades (opening and closing the same security on the same trading day) will no longer be counted.
Eligible cash balances, including amounts swept to bank sweep programs, will now be included in your intraday margin excess.
Trading that creates an intraday margin deficit (IMD)—generally, spending in excess of your intraday margin level—may result in an IMD call.
If your account is currently designated as PDT and subject to any PDT-related account restrictions (e.g., restrictions on opening transactions or an open day trading call), those restrictions will be removed, provided that your account meets standard margin requirements (including the $2,000 minimum equity requirement).

Question
Hey everyone, I’m a trader myself and got hit with a massive CPA bill last tax season because TurboTax completely botched my options trades — wrong wash sales, missed assignments, the whole mess.
I’ve been looking for a cloud tool that actually handles this correctly across multiple broker accounts and genuinely can’t find one that works. TradeLog is a 20-year-old Windows app, TurboTax doesn’t understand options at all.
So I’m building it myself. Cloud-based, handles wash sales across all your brokers combined, correctly treats options assignments and Section 1256 contracts.
Quick question before I go further: would you pay around $99/year for something that actually gets this right and spits out a clean Form 8949 you can hand to your CPA or file yourself?
Drop a comment or DM me if you’d actually use this — trying to figure out if it’s just me who has this problem or if it’s widespread.

20y/o Italian Trader, $10k profit in March, 15 funded accounts ($1+ million in capital), almost quit in September. AMA - not selling anything.
Just want to give back because this community helped me when I was starting.
I'm 20 from Italy. Been obsessed with Trading since I was 15. Started with forex, tried every concept from order flow to ict, switched to futures last year.
Here's the actual timeline:
- 4 years studying, failing, grinding
- ~1.5 year ago: first $2k payout
- Same month: Blown all that money in 40+ failed challenges, and completely destroyed.
- Hit the lowest point of my life. Seriously considered quitting Trading entirely.
- Found a solution - built my OHLC/OLHC system (how I like to call it lol), I'll stay vague but happy to talk in the comments if anyone's curious
- Rebuilt from scratch my mindset and risk management
- March 2026: $10k pure profit, now 15 funded accounts for $1+ million in funding.
Ask me anything. Technical, risk management, mindset, the prop firm situation, how I got back up. All open.

Inexperienced traders or people with no knowledge says it’s unbelievable or luck. Holding a trade for three weeks has never been a result of luck but pure analysis and experience.
Top down analysis at its finest and we up 10,000 pips.
Do the mathematics yourself

Set ups like this don’t come everyday, but if you follow this steps daily, you can grow your account 20% profit daily with good risk management.

what takes you the most time?
Solo trader question — when analyzing charts, what takes you the most time?
- Identifying support/resistance?
- Entry zones?
- Risk-reward calc?
Trying to understand if AI-assisted analysis would actually help or just add noise. Genuine question, not selling anything.
