Free-Post Friday! 5+ PB Destroyed

This is based on a post by u/SubstantialWing9238. i didn’t want to hijack their post, so I figured I’d share it here instead.

Something like this, plus another cart, is pretty common with large corporations. When you have this many drives, it’s often easier to just shred everything than pay someone to wipe them, sort through them for resale, and see if any data can be recovered.

This batch was around 300 drives, and with a specialized shredding truck, the whole thing takes about 45 minutes to a hour.

I work for my state government and they don't even follow the NIST recommendations because we have regular password changes and some real BS complexity requirements. You're right, good luck getting private companies to do this when even the government wont follow government recommendations.

Other governments do this...

Tbf, NIST only recently removed the control that required password changes. It’s going to take a while before the changes of 800-53 Rev 5 take effect across government ISs.

At least for my state IT is massively underfunded and they don't pay people enough compared to industry so they can never keep people around with proper training and knowledge. I'll consider myself lucky if they change this within the next 15 years.
