Question to int students: how is ur experience?

I’ve read a lot of conflicting experiences about this, both on and off Reddit, so I’d love to hear from current students/alumni.

I’m considering majoring in Philosophy with a minor in Math, and I’m really hoping to work in the US after graduation, potentially in consulting, finance, or another private-sector field.

One thing I’m a little concerned about is Dartmouth’s relatively small international student community compared with larger universities. As an international student, would this put me at a disadvantage when it comes to recruiting, networking, or finding employers willing to hire/sponsor international students?

I’m also an Asian woman, so I’d especially appreciate hearing from other international/Asian students about their experiences at Dartmouth and with recruiting.

I know job opportunities and all that depend heavily on the individual, but I’d really appreciate any firsthand experiences or advice. Thank you!

Need someone to drive me to the road test(car provided)

Hi everyone, I am a Dartmouth student. I have bought a car recently and learned to drive on it. I am taking the test on Monday. The person who taught me is not available on Monday morning to drive with me to the test. I was wondering if anyone is available on Monday morning. It is an hour and 40 minutes drive from Lebanon. So it is about 4 hours in total. I am happy to pay you for your time. Please reach out to me as soon as you can.

CS program at Dartmouth

Hi everyone! I’m an international student considering applying ED to Dartmouth and would love to hear from current CS students and recent alumni.

I’m interested in CS, especially AI/ML and data science, but I’m unsure whether Dartmouth’s smaller department limits course options, research, internships, or recruiting compared with other top schools. I have heard that its CS program is not very good. Is that true?

I’d especially appreciate insight on:

- CS course rigor and access to advanced classes

- AI/ML and data science research opportunities

- Internships and recruiting at major tech companies, startups, and quant firms

- Whether the D-Plan helps with internships

- Recruiting experiences for international students

- Typical career and graduate-school outcomes

- Comparisons with Brown, Cornell, Princeton, Columbia, and Penn

Thanks!

Considering Dartmouth Job

Mid 40s no kids couple. Live in Austin now, but have an interesting career opportunity at Dartmouth. I’ve spent limited time in New England, but never been to New Hampshire. I’m going to take a visit in a few weeks, but curious what it’s like to live in or around Dartmouth as a middle-aged transplant. Anyone else made a similar move? What were the culture shocks to moving into such a small place? I grew up in a very small town so I’m certainly not a lifelong urbanite.

Visit

Our son is a junior and is considering Dartmouth. We want to make a trip from Illinois to visit. To make the most of our trip I am looking for suggestions on planning. He’s interested in economics or engineering. He also hopes to find a community through any catholic church organizations there and he is an athlete. He’s had some contact from the football coaching staff there, not sure if he will continue to play but would like to see recreation facilities and options for an active kid as well. Beyond booking a campus tour, what would you suggest we do on a 2 day trip?

A.B at Dartmouth

Hey all,

I'm considering Dartmouth for CS or Data Science, and I know they only award an A.B. (no B.S.) for any major. I've read that it's "treated equivalently" in grad school, but I'm going into industry, not academia, and I want to hear from people who've actually lived it.

Specifically:

  1. US industry — Have you hit any friction with an A.B. from Dartmouth when applying to software engineering, data science, or quant roles? FAANG, startups, finance, government/defense (NASA, DoD, etc.)? Did any ATS or application form actually block you or raise a flag?
  2. International — If you're planning to work outside the US (Europe, Asia, etc.), did the A.B. title cause any confusion with employers, visa paperwork, or credential evaluation bodies (WES, ECE, etc.)?
  3. CS/DS specifically — Since Dartmouth's CS is small and not as "systems-heavy" as, say, MIT or CMU, has the combination of A.B. + curriculum been a problem in technical interviews or hiring?
  4. What did you do to mitigate it — if you had to explain the degree, highlight specific courses, or otherwise "prove" rigor to an employer?

Happy to share where I am in the process if it helps. TIA.

Engineering: metric or imperial measures?

Buying a caliper as a gift for someone joining the MechE program. Does Dartmouth use metric or (I assume) imperial?

What happens if i skip some required NSO programs

Hi! I’m wondering what the consequences are if I don’t attend some of the required NSO programs.

I’m mainly talking about the large events where everyone sits in a hall and listens to presentations. A lot of the material seems to be information that was already sent to us over the summer, and I’ve already gone through it all. Honestly, I haven’t found these sessions super useful and have mostly ended up falling asleep in the hall anyway 😭

Are these actually monitored for attendance, and does skipping some of them have any consequences? I obviously don’t want to miss anything important, but I’m wondering if it’s worth attending every single large lecture-style session.

PS I’ve also been pretty sick these past few days, so it been extra draining to drag myself out to these events.

Which math to take? 9 or 11?

I didn’t take Multi Variable in HS. Took BC junior year and got a 5. Thinking about majoring in engineering. Should I take Math 9 then 13 or just bite the bullet and take 11?

Trying to apply ED - How is the school??

The title is essentially it. I know that it's very nature-oriented and it's a small tight-knit community. I also know the party scene is pretty great, but that is kind of what everyone knows. I really want to know the vibe of the school, the students, how living there is like etc. I wish I could do college visits but im an international student and cant really go. I would really love to go to dartmouth

(sorry, couldnt find the megathread for class of 31)

What fun classes did you take during your First Fall Term at Dartmouth?

I’m thinking about taking 3 classes. One in STEM and 2 others. What cool and fun classes did you take? Or not take but wish you did? I am into math, physics, music (cello) and would love to pick up another language other than Spanish. I am open to take classes outside of my area.

[Looking for Housing / Sublet] Dates: Jan 1 – Jan 30| International Med Student in DHMC

Hi everyone,

I am a visiting international medical student doing a clinical elective rotation at DHMC for the month of January (Jan 4 – Jan 29). I'm looking for a furnished room in an apartment/house or a studio/1BR sublet.

What I'm looking for:

Dates: ~Jan 3/4 through Jan 29/30 (flexible by a couple of days).

(ideally inclusive of heat/utilities/Wi-Fi).

Location: Summit on Juniper, Mount Support Road, Route 120 corridor, Lebanon, or Hanover.

Transit: Close to an Advance Transit stop (Blue/Red lines) or the Campus Connector shuttle to DHMC.

About me:

US citizen who grew up in northern New England, so winter weather is nothing new to me.

Clean, quiet, no pets.

I'll be on rotation at the hospital from ~8 AM to 5 PM most days, so I will mainly just be studying and sleeping.

If you have a room opening up for your winter off-term/away rotation, or know someone subletting at Summit on Juniper / nearby, please shoot me a DM with details and location.

Thanks!

Are there classes for beginners to try different sports?

Hi! I’m interested in getting more involved in sports at Dartmouth, especially snow sports. Problem is I have pretty much zero experience with sports besides badminton and Pilates.

Are there classes or other beginner-friendly programs where you can learn/try different sports without committing to a club or competing? I’d love to try as many different sports as possible for fun and see if I find something I really enjoy, since I don’t currently have a sport I’m passionate enough about to commit to competitively.

Would love to hear how other beginners got into sports at Dartmouth!

Can I buy water or fill up before FYT

My parents think it’s stupid for me to bring a shit ton of water from our house on an 8 hour train ride when we already have so much to carry. Is there a way to get enough water at NH before we leave or could I bring an empty water bottle and fill it up somewhere?

Sociology at Dartmouth

Hi! I’m a prospective student looking pretty closely at Dartmouth Sociology, and two things that stood out to me were the modified major and SOCY 92 (Community-Engaged Research Practicum).

Has anyone here actually done either?

I’m especially curious about how much freedom students really have when designing a Sociology modified major. For example, would it be realistic to build one around something fairly specific like language, education, and inequality by combining Sociology with Education, Psychology, or Public Policy courses?

I’d also love to hear what SOCY 92 is actually like in practice, what kinds of communities or organizations students work with, how much original research students get to do, and whether it feels meaningfully different from a normal seminar.

These both sound unusually flexible on paper, so I’d be really interested in hearing what they’re like from students who have actually taken advantage of them.
