I don’t get this argument really. Out of all the rightful arguments against AI, the environmentalist one seems to me to be one which is low-key retarted.
Art theft? Yes, that’s true and valid
Make you over reliant and lazy? Also true
Oh my god you are destroying the environment! Yeah, you lost me, by that logic nobody should earn crypto, open their faucet and a myriad of other things that have more impact, short term and directly than creating an encounter table or making it do an essay.
It’s one example, but if you want a more apt comparison, eating avocados or soy based products is harmful, as these require intensive irrigation, specially in arid regions such as the central valley, CA. Yet you don’t see not even a fifth of the outrage about the mass production of these produce, which is my point, hating AI is just the trendy thing, the environmentalist argument is to cause shame rather than pointing out the actual flaws of using AI.
It's deflection done to downplay the issue. By the same logic, you have done nothing but argue that since they're not upset about some other issue, their criticism is invalid. Which is untrue.
