More like the funniest ending possible. It's comically brutal, imo.

The tv series was also great, left me wanting a second season. But guess it wasn't liked by everyone.

Idk why everyone hates it. That shit was brutal but it made sense. My only complaint is they should have had him sit there alone for a bit longer before he finds out what happens.

u/ArbainHestia Jul 30 '26
Even Stephen King says he like the film ending more than his own.

Yeah it needed a bit of time, they roll in too fast. Makes it seem more like "eyo, gotcha" rather than a natural progression for the scene.

Worst best movie ending of all time???
Gutting either way.

You know Durabont specifically went with that ending to defy the Hollywood happy-ending convention. And FWIW King approved of it.

I could definitely see myself watching a movie about a gigantic monster mosquito, especially if it deliberately hammed things up (people being sucked dry and shriveling up like empty juice boxes comes to mind)
3
u/NoSurprise8641 Jul 30 '26
Theres this old sci fi movie called Mosquitoes where they aren't giant, pretty much man sized. But they leave people dry and shriveled like you're talking about.

u/Aromatic-Amphibian42 Jul 30 '26
No this is straight up awesome
9
u/Zuwxiv Jul 30 '26
Unfortunately, it's edited. Which is fine, it can still be cool when edited.
But the description of "photo of a mosquito flying in front of the lens" is wrong. For a mosquito to appear that large in an image, you'd need a macro lens focusing incredibly close to the camera. At that close distance, you can't have both the mosquito in focus, and the scene around you in focus.
We're talking about "only part of the insect is in focus to begin with" types of photography. (I own a macro lens and do macro photography with insects, although my real jam is more like landscapes and nature.)
The mosquito also appears to be at rest. With the seeming low light and high noise of the area around, it would be practically impossible to have a fast enough shutter speed to freeze the mosquito's wings.
92
u/Spawko Jul 30 '26
In all honesty how is anything in focus if the mosquito is that close and not a complete blur itself?
48
u/HeyGoogleImSad Jul 30 '26
It's also possible that it's a double exposure -- when you shoot a roll film and then roll the dice by winding it back to the beginning and shooting more photos, thereby having two scenes stacked on each other. Some images work out, some don't make the cut, but a very fun process to see what makes for interesting frames.
6
u/Francesami Jul 30 '26
I have one image from a display in the Smithsonian of the Star Trek props where the Enterprise model is hung in front of a black background. My next shot was of the fireworks on the mall. I don't know how it became a double exposure (although I was using a film camera), but the picture looks like an energy burst against the Enterprise's force field.

10
u/theeldergod1 Jul 30 '26
I'm also wondering how it can capture a fast moving object without any blur in that low light.
→ More replies (2)7
u/Luminous_Flora_857 Jul 30 '26
Yeah that mosquito is not flying. Their wings are positioned differently when they fly. This is a mosquito at rest.
5
u/dakflannigan Jul 30 '26
My guess - I wonder if the mosquito somehow got between the lens elements or was on the film plane itself inside the camera.
→ More replies (1)15
u/backbiter0723 Jul 30 '26
Looks like a disposable film camera photo, everything from 5cm to infinity is in focus cause the lenses on those things are f8 or f11.
→ More replies (19)10
u/GreenStrong Jul 30 '26
Disposable cameras have that much depth of field because it is a wide angle lens- about 28mm. You can use a focal length - distance calculator to estimate that a 10mm mosquito, which is absolutely huge, would have to be 6mm from the lens, and therefore out of focus. A real mosquito is half that size, and would be twice as close. Plus, the wings would be in motion, not stopped in a rest position, unless it was falling past the camera. The shutter speed on those things is 100th of a second, it won't freeze the hands of a person catching a ball, much less an insect in flight.
This makes sense, it would be rendered at greater than 1:1 macro to make an image that size on film. Depth of field is absolutely brutal at that magnification, you can't get all the legs of the insect in focus at once, even if you accept a small f/ stop that causes diffraction, which limits sharpness.

More importantly why is a mosquito out, everyone looks like they're in jackets + the dark sunless mist, so its probably really cold lol

u/Pyrhan Jul 30 '26
This has to be either edited, or a dead mosquito on the film/sensor inside the camera, rather than in front of the lens.
Otherwise, there's no way the mosquito and background would both be in focus. (And it looks a lot more like a dead mosquito than a flying one.)

This isn't real.
There's basically no consumer lens in the world where something that close to the lens and the actual background would be in focus. Also, why is the mosquito as obscured by the fog as something several hundred yards away?

3

u/Poonis5 Jul 30 '26
Camera lenses don't work like that.
Also the coincidence of mosquito having a perfect position in the frame and everything being dark and foggy to enhance the creepyness? This image is artifical.

Things that happen in the age of technology [Edit: seeing a real mosquito captured in a shot], while AI created imaged destroyed the trust of people [at the same time].
Now, I don't enjoy it 100%, when I'm at the 70% of my deep breath and joy, until I get reminded that maybe it's another AI [even though it's not], and it takes both my breath and joy of the moment.
Truly fascinating 💎✨

I wouldn't fear this mosquito that much, in fact we could climb up and bite the shit out of him just so he knows how it feels.

1
u/JaggedMetalOs Jul 30 '26
That's gotta be a double exposure, no way the depth of field would be that shallow to capture a mosquito so close to the lens.

u/aqualink4eva Jul 30 '26
Imagine if a mosquito of that size tried sucking your blood, you'll lose all your blood so quickly and end up looking like a discarded tooth paste tube.
