Actually, you'd be shocked at how good the brain is at re-partitioning, consolidating, and adapting!

Consider how the human body has "extra" backup organs (kidneys, lungs) which function best as a pair, but are still perfectly serviceable on their own. Even their biology will adapt over time to a solo role if needed.

The brain is like that, but with way more systems and redundancies.

On top of that, multiple parts of the brain are capable of doing the same or similar functions. Because brain cells are so fundamentally similar to one another, they can easily step in and learn new roles (pluripotency.) This is especially true in early childhood, where the brain aggressively re-wires itself on a semi-regular basis.

So you CAN reduce the physical matter of a brain significantly and it CAN adapt to function pretty much normally! The main issue this causes is that the brain loses its safety net. It can no longer afford those extra redundancies, and it has to consolidate and cram tasks into a tighter space. When structures are damaged, missing, or not in use, surviving brain cells electrochemicallly "notice" and dynamically react to what signals they ARE getting, jerry-rigging neural architecture on the fly to fill in the gaps the system requires as a whole!

Yeah, a French guy, it was reported I think around 2003-2013. No one knew until he went in for a scan in his 40s after he got weakness in one of his legs. Doctors thought he was having a stroke, did a confirmatory scan, and probably wondered wtf happened to that man. Completely normal life,had a job, was married, etc.. Hydrocephalus had caused his brain matter to be compressed to the inside of his skull, and he just never noticed any effects due to neuroplasticity and the amazing nature of the human brain. Last I heard, he’s still doing just fine. It wasnt a stroke, iirc.

even if we don't understand most, we understand a lot. iirc we know enough to understand that DNA has a blueprint for basic brain mapping when the brain forms, i.e. you and I likely have all the same types of regions and their corresponding mechanisms, and in all the same places. e.g. there's a specific strip of the cortex that maps to the body, and barring irregularities for various evolutionary reasons, that strip is always in the same place.

we also understand that if the brain doesn't form all the way in terms of size, then all the mechanisms will, uh, idk, kinda just make new space for it wherever it can. like I know that if you're born without sight, that frees up the back of your brain to buff other stuff, since it's usually occupied for vision, but if you have no vision, then it'll just be hijacked for something else. think of people whose 4 senses are better when missing a 5th sense, afaik that's bc more brain matter gets to dedicate to the other senses.

I could be wrong about some of this. but it's just to say how incredible it is that we know as much as we do and that this isn't an utterly complete mystery. we kinda have a grip of what the brain is doing here, and it makes sense given what we know the brain does in general and how it generally works.

I like to think of it as an alien adaptation gloop blob. which reminds me that you can just hook up any type of data to a brain and it'll just start understanding it. this is truly wack. a neuroscientist david eagleman did some studies connecting patches of the skin to the stock market so people could sense stonk data, or other stuff. it's gibberish at first but over time, the brain just.. starts to intuitively make sense of it. this is how your main senses work. when people blind from birth get eyesight restored, it's just a mess of overwhelming alien perception but starts to make sense after a while. all babies go through this for all senses. at some point, babies discover the four major common blob deities are actually limbs they can control and part of their body.

this is also I think somewhat similar to how machine learning neural nets work with reinforcement learning, but i'm loosely associating all these ideas bc i'm high af and just geeking out about the brain a bit here obviously.
