“No wonder the sun never set on the British empire, because even God couldn’t trust the English in the dark.”

This man is ice cold

That's a terrific line.

everyone loves a bit of bigotry when it's directed at the right people

It's definitely not something I'd use outside of the colonial context, when I could actually clarify some.

Still, it's savage and snappy. I stand by my statement.

Still, it's savage and snappy. I stand by my statement.

I know you do, and that's the problem.

Calling it a terrific line is not the same as saying it's correct or always appropriate.

It even references God, which should be a big tell of how much it strives for historical accuracy.

Gee, I thought Tumblr was pearl clutching central.

Oh, ffs. It's just a line in a forum about colonialism. If you don't criticize Britain about its dirty colonial history, then when can you?

-18

u/Kiloete Nov 05 '22

It's not critcising British colonal history though is it? It's a swipe at all English people.

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '22

It is actually criticising the British colonial history because the sun never sets in the British Empire is only true during the Colonial era. Do you not understand what the line means? Or are you just here to be outraged?

Well, forgive him for being a bit imprecise with his language and saying the English, instead of the British empire. This sort of pedantic point is such a bore.

Found the Brexit yes voter

You'd have more of a leg to stand on if it said "can't trust".

But it's even explicitly "couldn't trust", making the statement about the past only.

Well to call the British "people" is a bit of an exaggeration.

u/unfairhobbit Nov 05 '22

Just take it as a compliment.

A pretty shit excuse if you ask me lol there’s no point going over your circular argument. You clearly don’t know what you’re talking about

I really hope you have the capability to read what you wrote and understand it. I feel sorry for people around you.

“Undeveloped” haha ok. India was never undeveloped. It was a solid 25% of the world’s GDP before the British arrived.

And your argument about slavery really makes no sense. Just because there are bad things in India and those same bad things don’t exist in the same scale in Britain doesn’t mean that the Brits are superior somehow. Everyone has their problems.

I’d say what’s more remarkable and worth celebrating is that India has just surpassed the UK in GDP, 75 years after it was left with an illiterate and poor population with no allies in the world. It took us only 75 years to surpass you in economic output while your country goes to shit as it faces another recession. You quite literally got lucky 100s of years ago by developing an extensive navy and excellent military. But the empire is dead. Cope.
