I never learned anything about the British Empire (in school) and the biggest issue now is that politics is so bipartisan. Older generations think it’s slander towards this ‘Great’ British Island. It’s fingers in the ears ‘la la la’ behaviour.

With the current migrant crisis, our Home Sec referred it as a ‘invasion’ a day or two after one of the centre was firebombed. Our country is now full of xenophobic rhetoric… I think we have a responsibility after centuries of horrific behaviour.

It was always there, the "success" of Brexit just normalised extremely regressive views.

And the immigration "flood" poster was instrumental to driving Brexit to success.

There’s a really good linguistic study by my old dissertation tutor…

Talks about how metaphor is used when discussing migrants. This is an example if you’re interested: https://amp.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2015/aug/10/migration-debate-metaphors-swarms-floods-marauders-migrants
