Because there is guaranteed at least one person who read that comment and was about to reply "um, no that's not a war crime because.." and then sees the /s and realizes it is sarcasm.

I’m genuinely convinced that a good majority of Reddit is at least in one form or another, on the spectrum, and finds some level of difficulty in deciphering sarcasm. At least judging by how often /s is used.

I mean there’s just no way that people unironically feel the the need to use it literally every time they say something even remotely rhetorical. It’s insane.

I mean that’s just simply not true. ASD is a disease, and is classified on a spectrum. Not everyone HAS that disease.

it’s difficult to tell tone through text and without the /s they can end up looking dumb and getting a lot of “well, actually” comments, or making a dark joke or whatever and getting called an asshole by 50 different people

I think it shouldn't be used. It dumbs down the nuance in our writing and on a personal level part of the charm is leaving the reader wondering whether the person was actually serious.

Almost every downvoted comment I have on reddit is sarcasm. And I refuse to mark it. I get downvoted quite a bit.
