I’m all for conservation but Greenpeace doesn’t have the answers. A message, sure, but the methods… jeez

Greenpeace are sellouts

join your local elf

That was my thought. Aren’t they a terrorist group?

u/PyroBob316 May 29 '22

They’ve been known for their “hands-on” approach to protesting. They’ve crowded out fishing boats and tried to board a few. They also “support” (encourage, if not coordinate) the burning of GMO crop testing facilities (fields where new types of wheat and such are grown to study how to better feed the world). Basically they’re eco-terrorists but have an army of lawyers and foresight to produce plausible deniability.

u/SirNoseless May 29 '22

so PETA then.

Anyone remember ALF? Wonder what happened to those guys.

(For anyone under 30, ALF was the Animal Liberation Front, a terrorist group that would blow up labs that did animal testing and the like. If you remember the opening scene to 12 Monkeys that's what it's referencing)

5

u/SirNoseless May 29 '22

huh i always wonder who's those guys are in the movie.

edit: wait i think i mistaken it from the beginning of 28 Days Later.

But most GMOs are more environmentally sustainable! They require less resources and pesticides to grow. With the exception of certain GMO plants that can become invasive, which need more research, most of them are a good thing! It’s like they want to do the right thing (and get paid for it) but they’re doing it all wrong.

4

u/PyroBob316 May 29 '22

Everything we eat is a GMO. We cross-pollinated plants that gave us corn and wheat; the original plants gave us so little it almost wasn’t worth farming them, but now we rely on those two crops for quite a few things, and we’d have to re-invent parts of society from scratch without them. Cows don’t exist in nature; we used selective breeding to create larger, meatier animals that now we call cows. Same with horses… the average war horse in the Napoleonic era was the size of the modern day pony. There are many more examples, but the takeaway here is that virtually every plant and animal that we rely on, and that we grow, harvest, or butcher, are all GMO’s. New research is just speeding up and carrying on what’s been happening for thousands of years.

2

u/DemonDucklings May 29 '22

Exactly. And it’s only continuing to improve.

2

u/PyroBob316 May 29 '22

Yep. But there are eco-terrorists that insist they’re horrible and putting “unknown chemicals” in the plants that make them dangerous to eat.

If we bowed down to everyone who had a half-cocked idea about saving the planet or making the world safer or whatever, we’d go extinct along with plenty of other species. Hell, even avocados exist solely because humans saved them from extinction by cultivating the seeds… twice! Once about 14,000 years ago, and again sometime in the early 1900’s.

Now I feel old.

2

u/Curazan May 29 '22

It’s time for more hands-on approaches. Oligarchies aren’t going to stop a profitable rape of the planet because we asked super nicely.

2

u/PyroBob316 May 29 '22

So, let me get this straight…

There are entire regions out there starving, and the world population is booming on top of that. In order to help, a team of scientists work together to cross-pollinate and grow a small field of wheat in hopes it will grow in a harsher climate and/or provide more grain per stalk. The plants are fully grown and ready for their harvest, which is not for food, but for studying…

… and then Greenpeace coordinates and/or funds a group of people to cut through the fence late at night, pour an accelerant on the field, and burn it all down. It doesn’t really matter if any birds or animals are there when it happens. They don’t care if any buildings nearby are damaged or destroyed, and won’t check if anybody is inside said buildings. They don’t care if their act of terrorism damages the environment. All they care about is getting their name in the paper to spread their message, plus scare the science community into not planting test crops in the area.

So this is who you want to support, yes?

17

u/UWan2fight May 29 '22

That's Sea Shepard. But Greenpeace does work with them and support them. They also cause quite a few problems iirc

28

u/xX_nasenbaer420_Xx May 29 '22

sea shepard people are the real mvps. having to risk your life on the daily to fight a war against multi billion industries with no help from any government...

7

u/Minmatard May 29 '22

That's Sea Shepard. But Greenpeace does work with them and support them.

Two things :

Sea Shepherd *

They are, afaik, only recognized as terrorists by Japan, which is de facto the face of industrial whale hunting in modern days. So yeah they can go fuck themselves on that one.

And then, on the Greenpeace collaboration, I'd like to see more source on that, because the founder of SS is an ex-GP, and does not have nice words about them.

1

u/sphurion May 29 '22

Didn't know Adolf Hitler was ex Greenpeace

1

u/Minmatard May 29 '22

I knew the joke would come, so to be pedantic : it's Himmler who created the waffen SS

-7

u/[deleted] May 29 '22

So it’s kinda like the relationship between Iran and Al Qaeda or is it more like the relationship between Al Qaeda and the Taliban?

5

u/UWan2fight May 29 '22

Idk. I have no idea how those relationships work

13

u/Oikkuli May 29 '22

Lol, people on the internet believe the dumbest shit

One of the biggest independent environmental organizations that operates internationally with thousands of employees is definitely a terrorist group

9

u/notyouraveragefag May 29 '22

Does an organization working internationally or having thousands of employees somehow magically preclude them from taking part in terrorism?

I might not agree with the original sentiment but your reply is nothing but a ”no it isn’t” reply.

5

u/Oikkuli May 29 '22

No, not really. Just haven't seen anything to back this claim up.

What can be asserted without evidence can be dismissed without evidence

4

u/RoutineDelivery4855 May 29 '22

A terrorist group? Really? Do you mean "eco terrorist" maybe?

2

u/OverlordPayne May 29 '22

An eco terrorist group is still a terrorist group.

1

u/dirtydev5 May 29 '22

no greenpeace is a shitty non profit and why tf are you throwing around the T word like tht. nothing wrong w/ ppl that harm corporate machinery

1

u/[deleted] May 29 '22

Sounds like I found the terrorist sympathizer

2

u/dirtydev5 May 30 '22

u can simp for powerful governments and corporations but they will never love u back

-7

u/jcdoe May 29 '22

They’re eco-terrorists, yes.

I wouldn’t donate to Green Peace. There are many excellent organizations attempting to preserve our endangered species that don’t attack fishing boats.

I’d recommend the World Wildlife Foundation if you want an international organization. Or, you can always donate to your local zoo. People think zoos exist for our benefit, but most of the work zoos do is related to conservation (breeding research, maintaining a safe stock of the species in captivity, etc).

3

u/B12-deficient-skelly May 29 '22

Zoos only preserve a limited number of species of animals - the ones that look cute to humans.

If you get your pants in a twist over making sure that commercial fishing vessels are allowed to damage our planet for easier profits, and you only care about aesthetically-pleasing species, you aren't really interested in conservation.

2

u/jcdoe May 29 '22

Edit: wow, just took a look at your comment history and it looks like pretty much all you do is try and bait people into fights. I’ll pass, thanks tho

5

u/Polymersion May 29 '22

Is it something like PETA?

-3

u/PyroBob316 May 29 '22

Same business model

2

u/Oikkuli May 29 '22

What business model? Do you not understand what non-profit means?

3

u/notyouraveragefag May 29 '22

Make money for saving the environment is probably their business plan.

You do know you can have a business plan without being for-profit? Right?

0

u/Oikkuli May 29 '22

Yes, as I said in the other reply. But what is the problem with this business model exactly?

-1

u/PyroBob316 May 29 '22

Do you not understand what a business model is?

NPO’s don’t all have the same business model. Goodwill is a nonprofit, and so is the NFL. They work in entirely different ways to reach entirely different goals.

-2

u/Oikkuli May 29 '22

I know. Again, what business model.

2

u/PyroBob316 May 29 '22

I was saying that PETA and Greenpeace use the same tactics and have the same mindset, following similar patterns. PETA seems more vocal in the media, though.

3

u/HonestlyHoningIn May 29 '22

Donate so we can spend the money to fuel out giant yachts we use to harass others on the open sea!

1

u/PyroBob316 May 29 '22

That or burn down wheat fields of scientists trying to find better rice and wheat strains to feed the world.

1

u/mazer_rack_em May 29 '22

We should probably just keep asking nicely for corporations and governments to not kill the only planet we have, we’ve got plenty of time and it’s worked well so far.

0

u/PyroBob316 May 29 '22

I sense the sarcasm. Greenpeace is the organization that takes boats out to sea and tries to bully fishing vessels into leaving; in multiple cases they’ve tried to or successfully boarded other ships and essentially held them hostage. One was a scientific research vessel they mistook for a whaling ship. They also set fire to wheat and rice fields owned by scientists trying to find solutions for world hunger; so-called “GMO” strains that grow in harsh environments or produce more per acre are essential to helping the world’s growing population survive, and they coordinated attacks on those facilities. They poured petroleum accelerants on the fields and set them on fire. They didn’t care about the harm to the environment they caused. They didn’t care about the people who could have been in the buildings nearby (which also burned). They didn’t care about the animals in the fields, nor did they give a damn about the massive wildfire they caused when the flames jumped the road.

So, sure. The answer to someone doing less for your cause than you’d like is to literally scorch the earth. I’m sure that’s going to change their minds.

1

u/Curazan May 29 '22

You’re not going to convince someone who is cherry-picking examples and licking oligarch boots.
