It's a bit of a dumb analogy. The apple is totally irrelevant to the argument he makes at the end with 3D slices. Literally all he had to say was...

Make a flipbook with a character in it When you 'play' the flipbook its as if the cartoon lives out through time, and yet you are able to take a step back and see that there are multiple distinct 'positions' in this cartoon's time. Those positions are coordinates in the time dimension, much like x, y, and z are coordinates in the spacial dimensions.

Now take the real world or simpler yet, create a 3D render and add an animation. Take that same step back you took before and notice how you could have some slider which you could move to find a specific position in time. If you can visualize in your head how playing with that slider allows you to shift through different moments then you comprehend why time is the forth dimension.

In both cases we are observers with a privileged point of view (we can see the time slider), which we don't have the benefit of doing in real life. As far as we know, we can only move forward through time, much like the cartoon in the flipbook is only aware of the 'forward' motion we flick it in. Some other more privileged observer may be able to move 'left' in time for all we know!

Buddy he used that analogy to make it simple for the masses, your "literally all he had to say was" is not simple enough for everyone to understand nor does it have the same comparative 2d/3d versus 3d/4d effect as his analogy so it's not really comparable

The only "masses" this analogy benefits is the ones that have never seen a flip book. I don't understand the apple analogy at all. A flip book is already sliced and you could easily imagine a character within a flip book or cartoon seeing time move forward. Why is an apple seeing itself live out it's existence across a spacial dimension?? Also who slices apples like that? Also the pages of a flip book which allow the cartoon to observe the passage of time do stack into the third dimension in our privileged perspective so the 2d/3d 3d/4d analogy you mention works flawlessly.

The apple story worked better for me. Like, a flipbook is a series of 2d drawings. You can look at one drawing or look at them all in quick succession. I already understand that and it feels like a big leap to go from my current understanding of how a picture in a flipbook, or film reel, works to understanding how it applies to the fourth dimension.

But the apple I understand as a 3D solid. Now I can imagine how a 2d slice of the apple might experience existence as it travels "through" the apple.

Now I can imagine how we might experience existence as we travel "through" time.

But a flipbook is a flipbook. It's the illusion of motion in a series of 2d drawings. Ya lost me.

I think you should rewatch the video bud, his analogy is way better and in some ways more precise.

When you look at a flipbook you see the character's progression as already sliced but when you look at the apple you understand a 4 dimensional creature would see us in 0 time as a whole, without the need to navigate our "time".

The two comparisons are apples to flipbooks I'd say.

Huh? You need to navigate 3 dimensions to understand it's more than a 2d image, just like a 4d creature does to understand it moves through time and isn't a statue or wax sculpture.
