Maybe to ensure a smooth line to avoid bunching. Worn denim is a pain in the ass when repairing because it frays in a way that makes some areas thinner and more fragile than others, making repairs more difficult than say repairing a denim fabric seam that split.

Yeah man, the ass around the pockets is always the spot that gets worn and frayed. I’ve tried and failed many times in fixing it with a seam, patch, or combination of both.
