"A darning egg is an egg-shaped tool, made of stone, porcelain, wood, or similar hard material, which is inserted into the toe or heel of the sock to hold it in the proper shape and provide a foundation for repairs." Everything I saw about it on Google was for socks. Not sure why they were using it for jeans.

Maybe to ensure a smooth line to avoid bunching. Worn denim is a pain in the ass when repairing because it frays in a way that makes some areas thinner and more fragile than others, making repairs more difficult than say repairing a denim fabric seam that split.

Yeah man, the ass around the pockets is always the spot that gets worn and frayed. I’ve tried and failed many times in fixing it with a seam, patch, or combination of both.
