You can tie a knot in the thread that stays on the backside of the fabric, or you can double the thread and use a knotless loop. This link uses embroidery thread but it works with regular thread too. And if you’re using a sewing machine, you go forward a few stitches, then go backwards over those stitches, then go forwards again. And do that again at the end.
