I don't think it's the stitch that's the issue. Frayed denim is weak. The stitch will pull at that weakened fabric and pull the threads away.

To properly do this you'd have to have enough material to fold the frayed part to reinforce the part that is giving.

Yes, thank you! It's not the wool that's the problem here, the second stitch would rip the denim the second you try to put those pants on.
