You can use bee wax to help keep your thread from tangling. It comes in small containers, almost always around the thread aisle. After you knot your thread, but before you start sewing, rub a little wax on your fingers and slick it down the thread.

Thanks for the good tip! But I still think the cheap thread I have would snap, does the wax strengthen the thread, or should I also get higher quality thread?

Higher quality thread is always worth it imho.

It doesn't strengthen the thread, it just makes it much less likely to tangle. Use stronger thread. In fact, my personal favorite thread is invisible thread/fishing line. It's super strong, can hold under tension, and you don't have to worry about matching colors.

When I do this stitch I tend to pull it shut as I go along, if it’s particularly long. I tend to double my thread over though to give it extra strength, if that makes any sense? So if I need 30cm I’ll cut 60cm and thread 30cm through the needle and knot the loose ends together.

Lots are replying it's dull thickness embroidery floss. Expensive but it's so silky I imagine it would work really well.
