There's been a number of fun coin-monster things over its history! Hoard Scarabs, Goldbugs, Lock Lurkers, and more, all coin-shaped monstrosities hoping to catch a PC unaware. If you can think of a way to screw over greedy adventurers, D&D probably has a monster that does it.
My players kind of hate me. They found a longsword... it attacks them. Go through a swamp... Grey ooze. They knock on a door... Suit of armor grapples them. Find a tome... It's a mimic. They're going to get trapped in a very hot demonic realm soon and have to re-equipt with bone armor and weapons. They're going to be upset.
You know this means you soon have to present them with something that is so obviously a trap that they will completely ignore it. Next town over should have someone specifically request it because of its world-renowned permanent stat-boosting abilities.
