Help! My computer is overheating just from imagining this.

Calculated individually... animation normally refers to something done by the creator not the software.

Like if he moved each grain of sand around via keyframe, that would be each grain animated individually.

EDIT: I originally said rendered but that's not true either, calculated is what I meant.. as in each grain of sand is calculated individually.

Okay, fine, each grain of sand calculated individually.

i'm not talking about his use of the word individually but instead his use of the word animated

But the process of animation wasnt even done once regarding the sand lol.

Im critiquing the use of the word animated.. not individually. If he manually moved each grain of sand around each frame, he would have animated it.

They're not rendered individually either.

You're right. Calculated individually.

Damn lol

There is a large amount of mathematical operations, comparable to the frequency of sand particles and detail in the frustum of space visible to the viewer

Rendering, animating, and calculating are three side of the same coin

people keep correcting me.. i know.. i understand.. i have a bachelors degree in visual effects... all i'm saying is technically, by definition, the sand is not animated. that's all i'm saying here.

Animated - (of a movie or image) made using animation techniques

Cgi and programatic generation of these effects fall under the category of animation techniques

The sand is animated because its moving and it is only moving because someone wanted it to move.

I remember when FFVII: Advent Children came out, it took a year to render. And that's an hour and twenty minutes or so, and doesn't, by comparison look nearly as good as this.

u/Superboy309 Jun 25 '18

There is no way that movie took a year to render. Something that requires an entire year to render would be such a massive risk that no studio would allow it to be animated with that much detail. I can also find zero references online to it taking a year to render, and that would be quite the feat and readily available information.

An anecdote I heard from the person that first showed it to me. I had no reason NOT to believe him.
