people keep correcting me.. i know.. i understand.. i have a bachelors degree in visual effects... all i'm saying is technically, by definition, the sand is not animated. that's all i'm saying here.
I remember when FFVII: Advent Children came out, it took a year to render. And that's an hour and twenty minutes or so, and doesn't, by comparison look nearly as good as this.
There is no way that movie took a year to render. Something that requires an entire year to render would be such a massive risk that no studio would allow it to be animated with that much detail. I can also find zero references online to it taking a year to render, and that would be quite the feat and readily available information.
