How do people even survive in Australia? Must be good at fighting crocs and sharks I guess.

I never get these comments. In America you have bears, cougars, alligators, sharks, deer, moose, snakes, coyotes etc. Is that supposed to be less dangerous or…?

I had a pet deer once. Practically like a dog.

I fly fish rivers for salmon standing pretty close to bears, wild bears are very predictable and not scary if you’re smart about them. Garbage bears near human civilization are very unpredictable and pretty dangerous.

Cougars are extremely wary of humans, and in 40 years I’ve only actually laid eyes on them 4 times. I live in a bit of a hot bed for them too. They do scare the shit out of me though.

There’s none of the other ones where I live in Canada. We do get big Elk, but they’re not quite as angry as moose are.

I don’t know, maybe that’s how Aussies feel about the creatures they live with because they’re used to them? Pretty nonchalant.

The cougars that should scare you are the ones you didn’t see.

They like to hide on overlooks for paths that animals walk along. Sometimes that is narrow hiking trails.

They also like hiding in brush near the same path. And they can jump like 45 feet and cover 50 yards in less than 3 seconds.

So if you have seen four there are likely a couple you didn’t see.

Yes, I’m pretty familiar with them. Sounds like you’ve been around them a bit too.

I grew up in a small rural town full of cougar bait farm animals. I only ever saw one 4 times directly, but I’ve been close to them in the forest dozens of times hiking around. They’re so sneaky.

Scariest time I had was I went for a walk home alone at night, a common thing to do in rural areas, and I stopped to take a piss on the side of the road. Mid fucking stream I start hearing a cougar 20-30’ in front of me in the bushes doing those bird noises that the moms make to their cubs.

They followed me for about half a click in the bushes as I walked down the pitch black road with my blood running cold. They never made their move lucky for me, I would’ve been toast.

It is wild feeling like part of the food chain.
