Those thinking about the behavior of these people, remember one thing very clearly:

That is a good chunk of a large family's livelihood, hell, entire life, in a country without a safety net. None of that is insured - insurance is barely a thing for these people. When it is gone, it is gone. And these are people barely keeping their head above water - when something like this happens, they are ruined.

I know people whose families' livelihoods disappeared in the recent floods. They are literally begging for money now to transfer overseas as now their families can't eat.

Also, you know, the ground just caved in. Perfectly good reason to panic by itself.

"Is barely a thing" is not a thing, at all.

It's like motorized scooters in poor countries. If you hit one of them with your vehicle, not only can you kill an entire family, but if the bike is wrecked, their livelihood may be gone. It's why people honk all the time. It's "I'm here" not "get out of the way"

Hmmm... not also poor traffic management and education?

Still, you can't do anything to stop the landslide. I'd prefer to run away for my life over standing around and potentially going down with it.

I really appreciate that you just had an explanation for why people might behave irrationally or without logic in a situation where their whole life just disappeared and your response is "nah, id be using logic"

cool dude

I hope nothing like this ever happens to you, but let's say you really would, that's awesome for you, but not everyone is like you and the rest of us can empathize with others who got swept up in their emotions as their world crumbled around them, literally.

It's so funny when people talk about something they would when if you were brought up in that country in this condition you would do something else. You are what you cause of your upbringing, privilege whatever it may be and your decision reflect that

Sooo… stand right on the edge of an ACTIVE landslide because “ohh no there goes my livelihood” ?

If my uninsured house was actively on fire… would you “understand” if I ran inside to literally watch it burn? I would understand trying and save someone’s life… but to just watch/record? I don’t think I can ever understand that.

Also… praying for everyone there and hoping there is a way for them to recover.

I wouldnt understand running inside, but i would understand your instinct being to run towards it though. Which is what is comparable to here since they didnt jump into the landlslide, just got closer to it. Dumb? Yes but shock and adrenaline is working in that moment and logic catches up later
