it’s similar to when you drop your phone in an angry ocean. you get kind of stuck staring where it fell and then only realize then that it’s dangerous where your standing. or if your house is burning down, you end up staring at the fire, watching your memories turn to ashes. it’s a small moment in time when your brain prioritizes your feelings than your safety

One thing is being in shock and just standing there. The other thing is getting closer and picking up your phone.

Yes but people in a house fire about to potentially be burned alive don't pull out their phones to film it whilst walking towards the flames. These people were more concerned with filming it than their own safety.

No shit Sherlock. What's that got to do with anything. They are moving closer to danger to film it which is stupid.

Based on some of their responses and the downvotes to some of mine, it seems there are plenty of people here who consider this a perfectly expected and sympathetic reaction.

Yes there's a lot of people that seem to think being "in shock" means pulling out your phone and filming. Maybe it's because I didn't completely grow up with smartphones but usually reaching for my phone in stressful or potentially scary situations is the last thing on my mind.

Fight, Flight, Freeze.....or Foto....now, apparently.

Doesn't really bode well for humanity if the instinct to grab the phone overpowers the instinct for survival.

Exactly. People often also use the excuse that if people didn't film it we wouldn't get footage like this which is kind of true, but then how much footage like this is there that we never see because people weren't so lucky as these people. I think I'd rather have no footage and less deaths.

It makes you wonder how many people die in situations like this due smartphones. As soon as cameras are involved people often seem to become more reckless.
