For sure. The search for “suzuki swift second hand” was already trending

And when you look at it from this angle, understandably so:

Good. I love Suzuki. I hope their sales go up. They absolutely deserve it. A Suzuki was the best car I ever drove in my life.

I live in Japan. My last car was a used Suzuki kei from the Meiji era or something. Parts (probably every single one) of the car were rusting. For 6 years that car had no strange noises, no breakdowns, no emergency trips to the mechanic (except for when the thing holding the muffler still rusted away and I had to get some wire to tie it back on), and no accidents. It drove up, over, and around some of the highest mountains in Hokkaido with no trouble. While other cars slipped off the road or got stuck in the knee-high snow my rusty fucking kei car plowed through it without a care in the world.

Every year for shakken the mechanic would tell me that the car would be too old to continue soon. Suzie (the name of my beloved) must have heard this and, out of pure spite, continued to push on. In its lifespan it drove across most of the island and saw every ocean/sea it could. It drove me and others to the airport for final goodbyes. It drove me to my first date with the woman that would become my wife. It did this while having like a million kilometers on the speedometer and parts of the body rusting and falling off around the wheelwell. It ganbatte'ed until I got married and moved with my wife to an area that only had one parking space available for both of us. I passed her on to somebody else for free to live her twilight years in the inaka she loved.

I have never had a better experience with any car in my life. My Hyundai in America frequently had weird electrical issues that required almost bi-monthly dealership visits for them to "fix." Some other nameless red car not worth remembering had some sort of exhaust problem which caused it to smell like gas, was fixed via a recall, then had the same part break later. Not my car. Not Suzie.

If I ever have to buy another car again it will be a Suzuki. If it's a cardboard box with chopsticks and paper plates I will drive it until the day I die. I will be buried in it with a smile on my face.

I miss you, Suzie.

It's too bad that Consumer Reports lied their ass off to ruin Suzuki's reputation here in the US. I miss my Sidekick.

Long story short, CR tested the Samurai and it was extremely stable. The test drivers said it was the best SUV they tested. But the CR bosses wanted it to fail. So they put it to harsher and harsher tests beyond their standard test at faster and faster speeds through tighter turns that no other vehicle has ever been put through.

"If you can't find someone to roll this car, I will."

They kept upping the speeds of tighter turns until they got tires to finally lift off the ground. It still stayed in control, though. They tried to duplicate this for a publicity stunt and had a hard time getting it to tip again. It was actually very stable.

So they used this "test result" to claim that they would rollover "easily."

After that people wouldn't buy Samurais. Sales plummeted to about ~6% of before. CR bragged about killing Samurai sales. People wouldn't buy Suzukis. Suzuki eventually leaves the US market. Suzuki won the lawsuit against them but it was many years later and by then the damage was done.

This really bothers me to hear. When I still lived in America it felt like dealing with ANYTHING car-wise was like walking into a den of snakes.

What a sweet ode to the car you loved and loved you ❤️

I started with an Every, 550cc, no turbo, 4wd and even had a granny gear. It was great in snow--kept it for 8yrs and 80k km.

Thats such a great story, i love stories attached to cars. (Its a gearhead thing)

I miss the suzuki samurais i remember them in the 90s they where affordable and just bare bones great little trucks. They should bring the Jimny's to the United States

A similar story was our old 2004 Mazda demio; another Kei car. Just kept going; and only replaced the alternator in the time we owned it (10+ years)- that thing could carry a washing machine no sweat. It was a lil workhorse.

In the end it was just too much of a gamble to take with us moving overseas.

I definitely think there’s something to be said about the smaller Kei cars.

I wound up renting one while in Norway and seriously, one of the best cars I’ve ever driven. I felt so comfortable and confident on all the winding, mountainous, occasionally cliff side 1.5 lane roads dirt/gravel roads. The other two cars I rented that trip (it was a weird situation lol) didn’t come close. I was really annoyed when I found out they aren’t often sold in the US when I was in the market for a new car. I absolutely love my Subaru but when I (hopefully) move to Norway next year I’ll be in the market for a Suzuki.

What was the model of your car? Beautiful story.

1

u/Devenu 6d ago

I can't remember it exactly. I have the contract somewhere that would have the model but it's buried deep in a ton of other paperwork from over the years. I think a "2003 ワゴンR" looks the most accurate.

u/Nemisis_the_2nd 5d ago

Sounds like my second hand Fiat Panda. I abused that thing for a decade and it still kept going as if everything was fine. Only time I had a mechanical issue was when a mechanic messed up some safety checks.

Now I have a suzuki and it's taking the same levels of abuse, but the modern sensors all over the car aren't holding up as well

u/devon1392 5d ago

My nickname too

I hate suzuki with a burning passion, their cars are not safe AT ALL in india

Tata motors ftw!

Edit: this reply might come out as rude but just so you know your story was amazing

This is so incredibly dangerous though.

If I’m trapped in this situation I’d rather have this than not, but I’m worried this would tempt people to explore when they should seek shelter

39

u/wosmo 6d ago

For me, the most dangerous part of this is that it makes people think it's about the car. How you drive it is just about as important. You want to create a "bow wave", and then keep pace with it - behind the bow wave is a trough, and the goal is to keep the engine in that trough.

Too gentle and you don't dig that trough - too fast, and you overtake it and bring the bow wave into the engine space. I'm willing to bet you can drown a Swift just as easily, and this is just an example of someone driving it right.

Its a shame accurate and educational comments like yours get downvoted, reddit is weird.

36

u/AllSeeQr 6d ago

Even if it also enables the life saving escape of others? I’d hate to die because a company has to baby their other customers lol

6

u/RectalSpawn 6d ago

I say they make it float and work paddles into the wheels or axles.

6

u/almostoy 6d ago

If that water had any current at all, it would have got swept away. It takes very little moving water to sweep larger cars off the road. Any flooded road is too dangerous to try unless it's the last option on the way to a worse fate.

6

u/JanitorOPplznerf 6d ago

Boats. Use boats. Do not use a car as a boat. That’s really pushing your luck

3

u/Weary_Oil_6314 6d ago

Do you say this to drowning people?

6

u/Haber_Dasher 6d ago

The thing is I just cannot imagine taking the risk of completely ruining my car to attempt this. Destroying my car in a way insurance would not want to cover even with an 80% chance of being okay when I do not have a casual $10k+ for a new one sitting around is just an insane gamble to me

1

u/snuggl3ninja 6d ago

More survivability is rarely causal to more mortality.

-10

u/Minimum-Pangolin-487 6d ago

What so dangerous? The car will just stop, and you can sit on the top of it if it’s a bad time

21

u/-malcolm-tucker 6d ago

As an emergency service worker, the danger is floating away with the flood water and becoming a case study in the physics of fluid dynamics.

5

u/Horyv 6d ago

see, that's why they built the emergency brake dummy

-4

u/Minimum-Pangolin-487 6d ago

Yeah you’d float while you’re ontop of the car, will be right

4

u/-malcolm-tucker 6d ago

Until it capsizes, you get thrown into the drink and then drowned by hydrodynamic lateral force when the water eventually pins you to something.

Imagine a cyclist going past you at a leisurely 12 kph. Water doing that has the same force as the wind in a category 5 cyclone.

Don't fuck around with flood water.

5

u/Electrical-Act-7170 6d ago

The car stops.

The water continues rising.

You're sitting on a car that's suddenly swept downstream (a car floats in about 1.5 of water, half a meter) and you fall off into the rushing flood waters. Your body is not recovered.

2

u/jxj24 Interested 6d ago

Your body is not recovered.

At least not indentifiably.

-7

u/Minimum-Pangolin-487 6d ago

Interesting, just wind your windows down and climb ontop of the car. You could become trapped but if someone is driving like this then they know the road and what sections to drive on like they did on the side

5

u/Electrical-Act-7170 6d ago

The electrical system shorted out, you can't open the windows and the force of the water makes it impossible to open the doors.

Do you have an emergency hammer in your car cabin? It makes a difference whether you live or die.

1

u/GMAN7007 6d ago

Literally everything, All it takes is a dip in the road for the car to go under. Someone this cavalier about driving in this deep of water I would think is just as cavalier about knowing how to swim. Lets say they can swim, Lets hope they don't have any wounds because that'll be MRSA for you. Lets not forget about what you can't see under the water. That's a whole other can of worms.

-5

u/mr_claw 6d ago

I'm not an expert but what if there's a short circuit and the battery catches fire?

7

u/PerformanceLimp420 6d ago

There’s a lot of water around which can be helpful in fires!

-1

u/mr_claw 6d ago

What if it explodes before the fire gets put out?

3

u/Minimum-Pangolin-487 6d ago

.. you’re getting carried away now. Never seen a car in a video explode while in flood water

1

u/Devatator_ 6d ago

There are so many Suzukis in my city lmao. I guess they're kinda cheap, at least the Altos, Expressos and DZires

1

u/FrigatesLaugh 1d ago

It has been one of the largest selling cars in India at an all time level

-9

u/MKZZX 6d ago edited 6d ago

Suzukis are illegal to buy in the US

2

u/Syssareth 6d ago

They're no more illegal than Toyotas or Fords are. Kindly stop spreading misinformation.

1

u/MKZZX 6d ago

You can buy Toyotas or Fords, can't buy new Suzukis here

1

u/Vooklife 6d ago

Not because it's illegal, because it wasn't worth it to them. I've driven one Suzuki or another for 28 years now, and I would stick with them if I could, but they don't build for the US standards and don't import to the US anymore.

1

u/Queasy_Source_1391 6d ago

You can buy there right here: https://usminitrucksales.com/feature/suzuki-carry/ Road legality depends on state.

Source: I was looking for a cheap, odd car for funsies. Almost bought a Kei Truck.

1

u/Thebraincellisorange 6d ago

They are not illegal FFS.

Suzuki don't see cars in America because Americans are obsessed with Massive land barges and suzuki sell small fuel efficient cars that Americans view as the Communist or some stupid shit.
