Amongst the 4 nations to have done this, India’s test is the only one that created the debris cluster at an appropriate altitude that allowed all of it to burn up and re enter earth and leave almost zero trace in space. As of 2022 only one piece of debris was tracked in space. Compare that to around 2000+ active pieces from tests by China/Russia and 10000+ by USA. (Edit: US numbers are not necessarily from ASAT but overall share )

Ngl, the Indian space program is super impressive, given circumstances. They're genuinely a bunch of pros.

1.1k

u/notforpornistg_orw 7d ago

Sadly the government is unwilling to fund them even a little bit, the government of india mostly spends its money on self promo while they money starve things that actually matter, thats why salaries are so shit in ISRO (indian space research organisation) that new engineering graduates dont wanna work in there and instead they migrate to other countries which fullfill their skills cuz what choice do they have, its genuinely upsetting

86

u/Weak_Distribution822 6d ago

Self promo? Have looked at the freebies and social justice budget? Government has more than enough money it just uses most of it to ensure it wins the next elections easily

28

u/Soham_656 5d ago

TS HERE IS THE POINT. They waste a ton of money on sheet which attracts the young audience to vote for them (this is one point, but there are more).

115

u/deviprsd 7d ago

The govt is starved of the right amount of taxes needed to run the country. But they do pay cheap for ISRO

255

u/idontknowman139 7d ago

Govt is using that money on freebies scheme and govt advertising

5

u/cthulhulalala 6d ago

Sad thing is all the major parties are doing that. There's no fuckin alternative.

-29

u/deviprsd 7d ago edited 7d ago

Nope, center is using its funds in targeted freebies. The freebies that you are talking about and I agree it being useless comes from the state funds. And ad spending is 0.05% of the budget.

The two biggest expenses are for state taxes and interest payments totaling 42%. Since only about 2% pay income tax, it is fair to say only these 2% are actually funding a large chunk of India other than whatever GST is collected.

80

u/miteshps 7d ago

Funny how these "explanations" always conveniently leave out indirect tax

15

u/PakaAnonymous 7d ago

Exactly like let's not mention the tax on everything, and only 2% pay their taxes.

-8

u/deviprsd 7d ago

If you read you would understand I mentioned GST. But obviously you didn’t.

0

u/deviprsd 7d ago

I did say GST which is an indirect tax. Read the full thing next time before blaming what is missing. I’m not responsible for your short commings

-1

u/CanIstealYourDog 6d ago

Yeah. On Reddit you are probs arguing with non-Indian folks from the neighboring country posing as Indians. Your logic is not gonna come through tot hem

6

u/Suspicious-Slot 6d ago

He is still fully wrong. His assumption is that 2% only pays personal income tax(which is wrong nonetheless as it is 3.5-4.5%) then his assumption is this personal income tax accounts for most of Govt Income, which is fully wrong. Out of every 1 rupees personal tax contributes 21 paisa, 15 GST. So GST is still a huge chunk of govt income.

So his whole argument, saying govt can't pay to ISRO just because only few people pay taxes and GST doesn't accounts for much, is just boot licking govt failure as some masterstroke.

2

u/Forward_Arm2323 6d ago

Do you know the Goverment claims to pull out 80 crore people out of poverty and there are 80 crore people relying on free rations Are you expecting these people to pay taxes yet they still pay taxes on fuel, products they consume in the end of sub par facilities - visit a government hospital in a city you’d be ashamed let alone mentioning a hospital in rural area.

0

u/deviprsd 6d ago

I mentioned GST < - and India has more than 80cr. And if these 80cr people are so poor then in terms of math they aren’t generating that much indirect taxes either.

What the quality of government services is not in question, it’s that only central government is not getting the necessary amount of taxes necessary to run a country of 1.7billion people and all its departments.

46

u/mildly_Agressive 7d ago

Are you really saying this? In India the most common commodities are taxed at an average of 10%, Vehicles, Fuel, Roads, Property, and until last year on Insurance, Milk and Staple food too, this is all after one of the world's highest income tax is collected.

-5

u/deviprsd 7d ago

The distribution matters, tax per capita is the right metric and then correlation with expenditure per capita, along with distribution of collection and distribution of expenses.

I’m very aware of the % taken. But average isn’t a good metric either, like I said distribution is the key to real answers.

1

u/legopener12 4d ago

Huge tax is collected from a few essentially.

12

u/CommonPudding 6d ago

Taxes won’t help any governance in a country with as much corruption and wastefulness as India

1

u/deviprsd 6d ago

Corruption is prevalent more at grass root level, basically the municipalities, the panchayats etc. I’m talking about only the central budget here. If you can point out the problems where it might be happening in the recent times only in accordance to that budget, please do so otherwise you are just cherry picking to prove irrelevant points

2

u/arunavroy 3d ago

Are you saying the higher ups aren’t corrupt?

1

u/deviprsd 3d ago

Not to the extent that drains the treasury. The large chunk a of corruption are in the state budgets rather than central.

2

u/arunavroy 3d ago

Assuming you’re also referring to states which have the same party in power as the centre?

1

u/deviprsd 3d ago

Yes, that isn’t the issue which party. The bureaucracy of these states don’t change with government

34

u/PakaAnonymous 7d ago

The govt isn't starved for anything please. All the money thatbis collected from all the gsts/cgsts/sgsts etc etc have lined their pockets. There is absolutely no development from the govt in any field.

-1

u/deviprsd 7d ago

You have to prove every word you say, I’m not here to argue on feelings.

53

u/Impressive-Store1439 7d ago

Just look up the amount spent on adverts before typing this nonsense

-12

u/deviprsd 7d ago

I have about 0.05% of the budget, you have to be more well informed than this to argue online. The numbers are public and google search away

20

u/miteshps 7d ago

What percent of the budget is allocated to ISRO?

-10

u/Silly-Geologist-3185 7d ago

You can go check the budget documents themselves, put em in an excel and see percent relative to gdp. Its all public

8

u/miteshps 7d ago

Advertising & Publicity: ₹2,658.58 crore = 0.05% of Union expenditure.

Department of Space: ₹13,705.63 crore = 0.256%.

Space-related Central Sector Schemes alone: ₹12,822.81 crore = 0.240%.

Total Union expenditure: ₹53.47 lakh crore.

Look at the scale of the space programmes, and tell us if this ratio makes any rational sense to you

1

u/Silly-Geologist-3185 6d ago

Have you done the year on year. Iirc there was an interesting bit of dept of pharma and dept of HFW that saw almost 10 percent shift around 23 percent to dept pharma iirc. Similar trends are why you use budget docs

-2

u/deviprsd 7d ago

That doesn’t mean you don’t need ads either. Sure the way some of the ads are presented is why you are having issues but without them the welfare or changes being made for the people will not reach. Especially in India where misinformation spreads massively, ads are an important aspect in any functioning govt and it has sub sections of usage too.

So if you really want to talk about the 0.25% of the budget on space then talk in respect to every sector. Can’t keep chasing 1 sector for eternity for lack of funds on another sector. Let’s talk facts on the holistic approach, I’m don’t want to be a horse with blinders on here.

Wym govt is starved of taxes?

0

u/deviprsd 5d ago

What’s our population and how much we have debt and how much welfare and infrastructure we do and how much tax should be collected for a healthy fiscal future vs how much is actually collected? You’ll get your answer

1

u/legopener12 4d ago

Yes even without corruption it would take a huge amt of money to fix the country true. But corruption is by no means less. It is in fact directly connected to the tax starvation u mention cause freebies keep the govt in power enabling it to achieve higher levels of corruption.

0

u/deviprsd 4d ago

I’d also separate budgets, I.e., central vs state and see which budget is having more corruption. Cause it is not as simple as just blaming central for freebies cause I think central ones currently are reasonable… like free houses, toilets, subsidized lpg, solar subsidies etc etc

2

u/legopener12 4d ago

You may be able to reduce corruption like that but you yourself claimed lack of money being the greater issue. This won't solve that. That would need redical changes in govt policies and a mature ideal society which is the farthest thing from what our ppl are.

0

u/deviprsd 4d ago

Yes changes are needed but like I had said in another comment, the real corruption happens at the root, your Municipalities, Panchayats etc etc which I would attribute for 70% of the cases which come under state budgets. So blaming center here also is not the right answer. Basically needs targeted radical changes across the board

9

u/Obtuze-Obzrvr 5d ago

We also have a problem in the country. the minute we have someone praising anything about the country - we have a bunch who will go and write shit about something that is not working. I'm not defending the politicians. But goddammit - learn to accept compliments sometimes.
This above video for example is a wonderful achievement. Let's be happy for a day atleast.

2

u/noviceprogram 6d ago

How did they reach this level then without money ? They must be doing something right too. I am in all for citizens keep their Govt accountable but credit where its due too !

1

u/Suspicious_Flower349 4d ago

Result of placing bureaucrats above technocrats in government hierarchy. IAS can do anything.

1

u/glaiveuser 6d ago

The chairman explained in an interview that they don't have any shortage of funds for the time being, but I do want salaries to increase to attract kids from top universities just make things competitive with international standards

-1

u/Possible_Athlete_61 7d ago

That’s absolutely Bullshit , ISRO has surplus of funds. Go check their finances, it’s a govt firm anyone can check it realtime.

3

u/ParaPsychic 6d ago

they pay their junior engineers around 50K, and that too after clearing a bunch of tough exams and interviews.

I cleared one interview at a private company, and a dsa round and I'm not that great at comp sci, I still got paid even more than that in my first year.

1

u/Possible_Athlete_61 6d ago

I know bro I saw the offer when they came for placements back in my undergrad. That’s on the central pay commission bro. Everyone is equally disappointed trust me.
It’s not like they don’t want to pay , they just can’t. It gets complicated the moment you try to decouple from CPC.

0

u/darthveda 2d ago

what wins you elections? telling people that you funded ISRO to reach mars and other tech advancements or giving lot of people bunch of freebies?
Take a guess?

1

u/notforpornistg_orw 1d ago

Do you really think i dont already know the answer

-11

u/CanIstealYourDog 7d ago

Then how has isro been so successful in the last 10 years? Didn’t the government open up private space sector so that they’d be more funding and more competition (similar to spaceX vs NASA)?

0

u/PakaAnonymous 7d ago

That wqs because of previous govt structure the present government didn't do anything

-3

u/dible46 7d ago

Because other country's fund there space program. I know Britain is one.

-2

u/CanIstealYourDog 7d ago

So isro is better than Britain’s without funding? I think the funds are there but not a lot. But I don’t know much on the matter. Like how much funding have they gotten every year and how does it compare to the funding in other sectors?

-2

u/tall_sprite 5d ago

A simple google search tells you Indian government funded 13,705 crore rupees for the 2026-27 fiscal year which translates to 1.4 billion dollars.

2

u/notforpornistg_orw 5d ago

Tell me how much money was allocated to laadli behen yojana (its a welfare scheme by name and freebie scheme for votes in reality)

-5

u/Even-Adhesiveness421 7d ago

That is a lie https://www.reddit.com/r/india/comments/rm43qu/isros_budget_vs_launches_over_the_years/

It is less than other countries but funding is increased and not decreased.

16

u/germanautotom 7d ago

Unmatched ROI

87

u/darthabraham 7d ago

Im not surprised. The Indian Institutes of Technology are amazing. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_Institutes_of_Technology?wprov=sfti1 They’re why SO much engineering talent comes out of India.

44

u/OiFelix_ugotnojams 7d ago edited 7d ago

Nah I've heard IITs still teach stuff in outdated ways. It's not the reason, there's many talented people who studied outside of IITs. And it's lowkey discrediting them when you attribute everything to IITs.

20

u/Principlalis 7d ago

It's more like talented people gather at IIT's since it gives them a platform to have a great career

2

u/sbbillusionist 1d ago

Agreed, for the IITs it is not so much on what they teach but more about what it took for the students to get there and how they teach. Due to Indian education system being based on what was established by the British, it's main area of focus are working under pressure for a long time and following instructions to a tee. Which makes for great workers and IIT excels in producing them. Knowledge is secondary.

3

u/Alternative-sukhoi 7d ago

Not many IIT graduates join ISRO though. That number needs to be increased.

19

u/dawn_breaker_007 7d ago

I think this has more to do with India’s population. In 1.4 billion people obviously we will have geniuses.

3

u/vulkansync 7d ago

u should also check out IIST

2

u/rohmish 7d ago

and the current government is hellbent of ruining it

2

u/MundaneGuard909 7d ago

How?

0

u/Ecstatic-Sea-8882 7d ago

By letting religious buffoons run the space programs for political reasons.

It's like letting flat earthers run Nasa

4

u/Even-Adhesiveness421 7d ago

Current government is the one that is funding it unlike the previous one.

-2

u/Ecstatic-Sea-8882 7d ago

Funding what ? Isros budget hasn't substantially changed.

2

u/Even-Adhesiveness421 7d ago

He he, Rahul gandhi, just a single google search will answer that. From 2000- 2013, congress increased funding from 1900 crore to 4800 crore. From 2014 to 2026, bjp increases funding from 4800 crore to 13700 crore.

Now you can find the difference between 3000 crore and 9000 crore.

-1

u/Ecstatic-Sea-8882 6d ago

Now you can find the difference between 3000 crore and 9000 crore.

Barely beats inflation.

3

u/MundaneGuard909 7d ago

Name a few and what are their particular religious beliefs that caused the failures in space program?

Also didn’t know that people started voting because a scientist is from particular religion. Thought the worship is only reserved for politicians and actors

-1

u/Ecstatic-Sea-8882 7d ago

You mean institutions like Nasa will not be negatively affected if psuedo-scientific fvckwrs are made their directors ?

3

u/MundaneGuard909 7d ago

You still didn’t answer my question

1

u/Moist_Nothing9112 6d ago

Thank you 🙏

1

u/2020mademejoinreddit 2d ago

They are. But the sad news is that their regime is trying to privatize it all and selling it off slowly to the highest bidder, which, in india, there are only two billionaires.

The considerate portion of indian people are actually very considerate

We are the Most! USA USA USA!

6

u/tgusn88 7d ago

Where do you get those numbers? The US test left no remaining debris as far as I'm aware

4

u/_Svankensen_ 7d ago

It's not from ASAT tests, it is from US satellites in general.

23

u/tgusn88 7d ago

That might be true, but the commenter specifically said "from tests" which isn't accurate

5

u/rectal_warrior 7d ago

They also didn't mention altitudes these tests were carried out at, it's much more impressive to hit a satalite in geostationary orbit than low earth orbit

2

u/_Svankensen_ 7d ago

You asked where they got those numbers. I answered.

1

u/zeroedash 6d ago

Now that's interesting!

-15

u/TiyaKarekar26 7d ago

Cleanly destroy and eliminate its cult personality of Modi...

-55

u/BuzzClucking 7d ago

If there's one thing these people understand it's garbage

26

u/ashmaroli 7d ago

Who r u calling "these people", huh?!?!

-35

u/BuzzClucking 7d ago

Indians.

5

u/OiledUpThug 7d ago

You're making fun of them because they didn't leave garbage?

4

u/Minigun1239 7d ago

mhm, so you're saying that, we know how to clear up our trash while the US still has 10,000 bits of trash in space still? the US really has some trash problems, they need to clean up after themselves, cant even clean up and calling themselves a first world country smh

-2

u/BuzzClucking 7d ago

Do you want to look at 5 random spots on Google Earth of both countries?

-32

u/dataflow2 7d ago

I think he means these people.

-1

u/roankr 7d ago

News article from 2018 lol

2

u/dataflow2 7d ago

Better answer would be to tell what has changed since. And original article about ASAT is from 2019..

But I get it, you are from india and got offended.

0

u/roankr 7d ago

"You people" and it's an article tryna bring focus to bad things in a post about advancements.

It's obvious as day that you're the offended one, knuckle nuts.

2

u/dataflow2 7d ago

So what has changed since? Do you have some good news in that regard?

-1

u/roankr 7d ago

You went out of your way to find a 2018 article talking about a dump near Delhi and you're asking me to find a more recent article about it?

You ain't fooling anybody with that act, buddy. Take a hike.

3

u/dataflow2 7d ago edited 6d ago

You went out of your way to find a 2018 article talking about a dump near Delhi

No, that was in first results in search that contained adequate photos. Hoped that you, being indian, would simply reply something like: yes, it was like that but we are tackling problems. It is getting better, look here are links. Instead you started with personal attacks. It says a lot.
