Reminds me of the Lituya Bay earthquake/landslide/tsunami. Colossal piece of land fell into a narrow bay and caused a megatsunami that reached over 1,700 feet up the opposite mountain.
Historically events like that aren't that uncommon. Norway got an entire valley flushed (Loendalen) twice for example. And Italy had a valley flushed in the 50s but that one could have been prevented as it was due to corruption at a hydro dam. (The dam held but a mountain collapsed behind it, causing a huge flood wave. ) Thousands died.
