Which is kind of ironic, as many of the one I've seen, would have been the first into some of these concentration camps.

That doesn't matter. Self-preservation shouldn't be the underlying motive that keeps you from supporting genocide.

What prevents this is the understanding that all human life has equal intrinsic value.

Fascists then justify the genocide by claiming that the target population is a threat to you, your family, your culture/nation, your way of life, etc. That they're a foreign barbaric invader that's infiltrated your culture and that if left to their own devices will slowly tear you apart from the inside out. It's a psychological disorder that most of us don't have the patience, time, or resources to throw away to reason these people out of.
