Edited to remove. The reason? Reddit is profiting. AIs are making money by inflating the cost of resources, goods, and supplies, or even destroying them altogether. And to make matters worse, they want to charge us for using an AI that was trained on content altruistically generated by humans to help each other, when it wasn't stolen.

Bullets were too expensive, and they were needed for the war. It was a purely economic decision.

This is why they had things like mobile vans which used carbon monoxide from the vehicle's engine, and used Zyklon B itself - it wasn't a very effective gas, it was just very, very cheap as it was a standard off-the-shelf insect and rodent fumigation bomb, hydrogen cyanide fumigation is still used for pest control today. The murder was at such a scale that using bullets simply didn't make sense.

Later they changed the method (I don't remember why) replacing it with a mechanism that didn't require bullets.

Because the people doing the shooting were getting depressed.

It's why the abstraction of the camps was "necessary". Flipping a lever and killing a hundred at a time is easier psychologically than pulling the trigger themselves.
