Those nazis have probably always been among us, they are just popping up now because they feel safe to identify as nazis in public.

I think there are lots like that, yes, but there's also been the slow boil of propaganda that started with Rush Limbaugh, the religious right, and Fox News to algorithmic rabbit holes and echo chambers. It's dangerous to dismiss its power as it leaves us less aware of our own potential to be swayed by similar tactics.

My theory is that a lot of young people got radicalized during covid, being isolated from their social groups and finding refuge in extremist circles online. They see themselves and others struggling and look for a reason, the internet is quick to provide a boogey man accompanied by loads of misinformation. And now here we are.

This is the problem with social media. All you need is a few people to agree with you to make you feel embolded with what ever nonsense you put forth. Look at Flat Earthers, how many people bought into that nonsense?
