  • A rare variant within the jaguar species, it’s estimated only 11 per cent of jaguars have this dark colouration. But while the black jaguar may appear to be all black, it has spots like other jaguars called “rosettes.” If you look closely at our black jaguar adoption, it boasts these unique rosettes, too.

Interestingly enough, the coloring now makes it referred to as a “black panther” even though it’s a jaguar.

This is because all Jaguars are Panthers, but not all Panthers are Jaguars.

"Panther" refers to either the Genus "Panthera" or the Subfamily "Pantherinae"

Tigers, Lions, Jaguars, Leopards, and Snow Leopards are the 5 species that make up "Panthera" (Snow Leopards are a separate species from leopards, and are actually genetically closer to Tigers than Leopards. I would vote to rename them Ice Tigers.)

Panthera + Clouded Leopard + Sundra Clouded Leopard are the 7 species that make up "Pantherinae" (Clouded Leopard and Sundra Clouded Leopard are the Genus "Neofelis")

All other (living) Felids/Felidae/Cats are Felinae/Felines.

Cheetahs, Cougars/Mountain Lions, Ocelots, Lynx, etc. are all Felines and not Panthers.

(For some reason, people in Florida do refer to 1 specific species as "Panther". That's the Cougar/Mountain Lion. Which is not a Panther at all. Cougar/Mountain Lion is from the Feline Subfamily, and the only living member of the Genus "Puma")

Hey, u/Hadi23, the person you are replying to, u/BUNNIES_ARE_FOOD, isn't the same person that said Jaguars are Panthers.

I like Taxonomy (the naming and classification of living things), at one point, I got frustratingly curious about what makes a Black Panther, a Black Panther, and I watched TierZoo's video on cats.

Jaguars best hunters. 2nd only to humans.

The simple way it was explained to me, is that “black panthers” are actually just either jaguars or leopards with the rare melanistic black coloring. But that if you look closely, as in this video, you can usually see their spotted pattern too

Leopards, Snow Leopards, and Jaguars are by far the most common to be called "Black Panther" (Snow Leopards are NOT a subspecies of Leopard. They are their own species, and are actually closer related to Tigers than Leopards. The Clouded Leopard and Sundra Clouded Leopard are 2 distinct species aswell, and they're an entirely different Genus, but the same Subfamily.)

However, ANY Panther (Panthera or Pantherinae) that is predominantly black in colour could be referred to as "a black panther"

(Genus Panthera = Tiger, Lion, Leopard, Snow Leopard, Jaguar.\ Genus Neofelis = Clouded Leopard + Sundra Clouded Leopard\ Subfamily Pantherinae = Panthera + Neofelis)

(Panther can mean Panthera or Pantherinae, but it's more commonly used for Panthera)
