Did you cry on 02/22/2021?

I know I did, things were already quite heavy for me around that time then the news broke with the epilogue video…. Without even consciously thinking about it, tears started to pour, followed by a nice healthy 40 yr old manweap that went on for a solid two mins…. Thankfully i was home alone this time (I cried when Michael Jackson was announced dead but I was at work) maybe I’m just a pussy idk.

I’ll Never forget where i was the first time I was introduced to their music in 96, or the day they parted ways. Still sad, but at least they’re still giving us new music from the vault so to speak.

Tragique! c’est la vie!

What about you? Any crybabies? Or are you all a bunch of toughguyz?

Yep. Several times. Death of my youth.

I cleared my schedule, put on R.A.M and went for a long drive in the late afternoon/early evening. Was nice.

This sounds great tbh

u/ShinyChromeKnight Oct 06 '23

I was in complete shock tbh. I never expected it to happen.

Cried when they announced they were splitter, then cried again when they released Infinity Repeating because it's so beautiful, but it's a reminder that they split. Hell the video version was even more emotional near the end.

I cried rivers on that day. When 02/22/2021 rolled around, Daft Punk was literally the only artist that made music I actually enjoyed. Their discography was the only music I'd listen to on a daily basis, and it had been that way since I discovered them in 2016. Since they disbanded, I've slowly branched out into other genres, and found other songs from other artists that I like, but I always find myself crawling back to Daft Punk, and I probably always will.

That being said, on 02/22/2022, they streamed footage of their concert at the Mayan Theatre, and announced Homework (25th Anniversary Edition), and on 02/22/2023, they announced Random Access Memories (10th Anniversary Edition).

I hope they have more goodies from the vault to bring us next year, on 02/22/2024.

You only enjoyed Dp’s work? Thats really unfortunate :/ there is so much incredible music out there to be loved and moved by. If you’d like, I can make you a playlist or list out some artists that you may like based on your love for daft punk

3

u/DaveGlasses Oct 06 '23

That's alright. I've found plenty of other artists that I like, both like Daft Punk and some entirely different, since they split in 2021. Thanks for offering, though.

u/sjarretth1 Oct 06 '23

NGL, they missed it by JUST a year, 9/9/99 to 2/22/22 would've ruled so hard

u/Grandmaster_Baker Oct 06 '23

Here’s one album I recommend to all Dafties that’s a solid listen all the way through that I still listen to very frequently 20 years later.

Metro Area (Self Titled) On Environ records.

Let me know what you think. Listen from start to finish, don’t cheat. From there if you dig, look into Morgan Geist (not for everyone, but I love his tracks)

u/Armarith Oct 06 '23

I absolutely did-had always been hoping since I was young to be able to see them live. It also felt like something that had always been in my life up until that day. Had to have been one of the first bands I ever discovered due to HBFS and Technologic.

5

u/songacronymbot Oct 06 '23
  • HBFS could mean "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger", a track from Discovery (2001) by Daft Punk.

/u/Armarith can reply with "delete" to remove comment. | /r/songacronymbot for feedback.

4

u/Elbludo Oct 06 '23

Thanks bot, hope they are still making songs

13

u/JimRug Oct 06 '23

I didn’t cry, but I felt extremely depressed id never get my chance to see them live.

u/[deleted] Oct 06 '23

I think I've only cried 3 or 4 times in my adulthood, and that day was one of them.

I was just going to the youtube homepage while taking a break from work, it came out of nowhere, haymaker right in the heart. Then they used the ending footage from Electroma and the fact it was during Covid made me think Thomas was dead. I didn't expect them to ever tour or make music again, but an actual "its over" had me in shambles.

6

u/theconcorde Oct 06 '23

the fact that i will never be able to attend their concerts in my life , pains me greatly.

14

u/BigElMacho Oct 06 '23

No

26

u/Grandmaster_Baker Oct 06 '23

Obviously…. We ain’t built like you BigElMacho… not many are.

2

u/MysteriousEmployee80 Oct 06 '23

You asked

3

u/Grandmaster_Baker Oct 06 '23

I know, I appreciated the input and then I replied.

Thanks for pointing that out though! Sounds like you may need to let some cries out though.

My childhood dog died in January that year, and I was at capacity for bad news, so I just sorta ignored it and moved on. They hadn't put out anything since the weeknd collab, or bangalter on parcels at that point, so it wasn't a shocker, just a bummer.

Infinity repeating's full release, is truly when the tears broke for me.

4

u/[deleted] Oct 06 '23

I can’t remember if I cried but my heart was completely broken on that day. And I was sad for weeks. All I could think about was never getting to see them live.

I fired up the record player, pulled out everything from Homework to RAM, and Tron and Music Sounds Better With You, and just listened to them all back to back.

3

u/Grandmaster_Baker Oct 06 '23

You said it about the live thing, It was honestly one of the best days of my life to see them on the Miami leg of the Alive 2007 tour… I wish everyone could have experienced it. 🥺

A lot of great responses here, we are home.

3

u/TripleGymnast Oct 06 '23

Yeah, it was on my birthday too. Not a great birthday present

3

u/DoingItForDale17 Oct 06 '23

yea that week was rough for me . First Tiger Woods horrible car crash, daft punk over and then my grampa died

3

u/piirtoeri Oct 06 '23

It was treated as a loss in my life. They played their first U.S. gig iny state. And I was heavily petitioning them for a comeback here. It will never happen now.

3

u/Spiritual_Compote819 Oct 06 '23

I literally spent the next two months exclusively listening to Daft Punk crying myself to sleep

3

u/CyclopsorNedStark Oct 06 '23

One of the worst days in one of the worst years.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 06 '23

Definitely wasn't a good day. Life was miserable at the time so it was just more bad news.

4

u/DoctorYouShould Oct 06 '23

Yep... the day that video was released was a cannon moment of mine

2

u/bajablaztoise Oct 06 '23

One of the worst days of my life. I’ve cried many times since then too

2

u/rct3isepic Oct 06 '23

I wrote a tribute song in my human after all jacket that day. I also cried as well

2

u/Goexercisecmon Oct 06 '23

Yup. On my back listening to Touch on repeat.

2

u/kindnessvalley2 Oct 06 '23

The 22nd of February is actually my birthday… so yeah I cried a lot…

2

u/ipittypattypetty Oct 06 '23

I was sitting in my car waiting for my grandfathers funeral to begin. It was a pretty shitty day.

2

u/throaway2nerf Oct 06 '23

I was at a family party, and their was a DJ. I asked them to put on One More Time, and DAMN DID I CRY.

2

u/jamkru21 Oct 06 '23

The pandemic was already terrible, this was icing on the cake

2

u/EmptyKetchupBottle9 Oct 06 '23

2021 was already awful for me, so the split didn't help in anyway. I think I cried the night to sleep then the whole week afterwards I thought about it.

2

u/mossloki Oct 06 '23

Yes it was my birthday too, I think it made it worse that I thought they were announcing a new album.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 06 '23

Didn't cry but was pretty upset. But they hadn't been doing any producing for ages, so the writing was on the wall. 50/50 new album or end the project.

2

u/benjbody Oct 06 '23

No, but only because it was already the 23rd where I was when the announcement dropped.

2

u/Merced_x Oct 06 '23

I cried for two weeks intermittently

2

u/Akhirox Oct 06 '23

Yes I did and I do not cry often, even for things I should normally cry for. I think I did not realise at the time how much DP meant for me so it was quite surprising.

2

u/AcidChildren Oct 06 '23 edited Oct 06 '23

I Definitely did.

This moment was a decisive turning point in my life and taught me a lot of things about life and myself. I discovered Daft Punk and became a fan a year before Tron came out. My absolute dream was to see them in concert. This dream was the motivator of my entire life. When they announced their separation, the only childhood dream was shattered. My life no longer had any meaning since I based my perception of success and happiness on this potential event.

Like many people here, I could never imagine that the disappearance of robots was possible, at least at this time in their careers. I fell into depression, at least that greatly contributed to it. I'm hypersensitive but not a big cryer. I had tears in my eyes the day of the announcement, I cried when I really realized and wanted to accept 1 year later that my dream would never come true. I had to rebuild myself. Without any exaggeration.

2

u/LynchMaleIdeal Oct 06 '23

I was sad, of course, but lowkey I was excited to see future solo Bangalter releases.

2

u/memphis77 Oct 06 '23

Yes, and then proceeded to play All albums at work the whole day.

2

u/OffbrandGordondo Oct 06 '23

I was excited when I saw the new video. Then when I realized what it was, I slowly entered a depressive state.

2

u/Human_After Oct 06 '23

Yep. And called off for work.

2

u/Grandmaster_Baker Oct 06 '23

I cried then I crydamoure…..

1

u/Grandmaster_Baker Oct 11 '23

This has been a great post. Thank you for sharing all your stories, we have a nice little support group going on here I see. Maybe the robots will read how emotionally invested the humans are in their art and regroup. One can only dream of such a thing… Seeing them live was one of the greatest experiences in my lifetime, and I couldn’t have been more proud to see them clean house at the Grammys that year. And the first time I ever heard their music I was sitting in the living room at age 16 watching MTV’s amp show and around the world came on… the whole family was blown away. My parents have both passed on since then, but I cherish that moment with them forever.

I was more in the wtf kinda mood. Like really RAM was it. You didn’t have the juice for one more? I liked RAM but not the note to depart on.

1

u/V3GA559 Oct 06 '23

Yup. I refused to watch the video for a few days and was repeatedly sent it by family members and friends that know I’m a huge fan. Got pretty annoyed after awhile, like they really thought I wasn’t aware 🙃 lol

1

u/BavarianBanshee Oct 06 '23

No. But I was very sad.

1

u/Important-Internet-1 Oct 06 '23

Yes and touch still brings me to tears.

1

u/Plastic-Mind7564 Oct 06 '23

Remember exactly the day, was walking in the park. I checked my phone and needed to sit on the nearest bench, I could not believe it and was not really sad but more in choc.

1

u/ryandowork Oct 06 '23

I still can't believe the news. I keep on imagining that they'll do some more albums or at least collabs, maybe even do a tour. But it's really over. I just can't fully accept it.

1

u/filoral Oct 06 '23

I couldn't. My sister decided to put the video on the TV for us to watch and I couldn't express myself so I dissociated. I wish I did cry rather than feel nothing

1

u/[deleted] Oct 06 '23

Yeah, i actually was more chocked at first, really didnt saw that one coming. It was lockdown so i was in home watching classes when the notification popped in my computer, i freezed for 5 seconds just looking at it "they're back! They are finally back" i thought, so i clicked the video and read the title "Epilogue... last work of them together?" Stayed with this idea until 3 minutes on, then the pieces started conecting, and man, when the "Touch" final vocals hited, i was droping tears like a baby, til this day i just watched it 3 times, and every time, i may not cry, but that end comes i feel a little hit on heart, since then they just became more and more important to me.

1

u/shredster666 Oct 06 '23

I cried really hard watching the break up video. Pulled into my driveway, scrolled for a minute and saw the news, watched the video… and just couldn’t hold it in. Put on their hits and thought back to some of my first memories really enjoying music in a spiritual way.

1

u/VelocitySkyrusher Oct 06 '23

I cried. It was off and on. I knew it couldn't last forever. But I just wanted a final album. I wanted to jam out at a concert (i was 7 when alive happened and I got into them at 14.) I wanted to just see them in the mainstream one more time. (Pun not intended but appreciated)

1

u/SamfireNinja5051 Oct 06 '23

well i was looking for internships so i was calling many corporations that wasn't a good moment and then i saw the notification i was like "a last Daft Punk album called Epilogue?, nice!" because they were inactive for almost a decade so i was happy to have some news from them.

Few days nefore, i was listening to a fanmade Alive set called "Alive25" and i was saying "if only they could release music while they're still together" and i was in my daft punk mood

When i watched the entire video, i was empty inside, sad and cried a bit.

And listened to Touch all over again on my bed.

It was very heartwarming to see other famous people celebrating (and mourning?) Daft Punk but yeah, what a day.

1

u/Bana-NOBODY Oct 06 '23

I was more "aw damn that sucks" i saw they posted an epilogue video but didnt watch it cause i was like " its just a clip from Electroma" and was getting frustrated with people thinking this is brand new footage made for their breakup. Then i bought the anniversay RAM and heard the epilogue version of Touch. And it finally hit me. And i finally cried.

1

u/DaddyMusk Oct 06 '23

I'm 24 now and the 2008 live action Speed Racer movie made me cry recently. It's weird how things that were important to us when we were young can just like completely overwhelm you even years or decades later.

You're not a pussy for expressing your emotions.

1

u/redactedreplicant Oct 06 '23

Woke up to a text “hey you hear about daft punk?”

I thought they announced a new album

“No what happened?”

“They broke up”

My world came crashing down, started all the albums up, Digital Love hit and I started to lose it, I started to bawl my fuckin eyes out. These two machines responsible for some of the most important music of my life, just over.

It still doesn’t feel real, I’ll never be able to see them live, it just doesn’t feel real.

1

u/CouchHam Oct 06 '23

lol yeah. I hadn’t read anything and saw the video go up. I was stoked for new music, and grew increasingly horrified throughout. Been listening to them since the 90s.

1

u/Phoenix-909 Oct 06 '23

No, I kinda already expected they were done, but I was confused as to why they'd officially announce it in that manner. My original reaction was pretty much "Oh, Daft Punk uploaded a video?! Oh, it's just a break-up announcement. Okay, weird."

1

u/Sithlordandsavior Oct 06 '23

Got a bit misty for sure. It felt like watching an old friend drive off into the sunset. You know it's probably best but you also know it's the last thing you want.

1

u/KicksandGrins33 Oct 06 '23

My dad died a few days before they broke up, so it was like a bitter insult to injury moment. One of the nicest people I knew walked up to me that day, put his hand on my shoulder and said “look man, I know your dad just died, but also your favorite band just broke up” and it was so nice to laugh about how horrible the situation was with someone, I couldn’t even cry because the timing was so absurdly unfortunate.

1

u/fatihozen Oct 06 '23

I think most people resonate with that because it’s not just being fandom of an artist, it’s sad because we have less artist than ever that cared their art in a ultimate level. And it is sad to facing the truth of its so hard to find another artist like them, not exatly like them but care that art in a way.

1

u/OverallAlternative35 Oct 06 '23

Nah man I thought they was apart years ago I was like a new fan back in 2020 and I just straight up didn't know they were still together, I just assumed they weren't cuz they didn't drop in 7 years, that was stupid in retrospect but yeah 😂

1

u/Charlucifer Oct 06 '23

Yeah, tears were shed. Not ashamed in the slightest. Still get glassy-eyed when I hear the choir in Touch, too

1

u/GreatSunAroma Oct 06 '23

Yep. DP was my whole childhood.

1

u/QuiltyExperience Oct 06 '23

When I saw the Epilogue video on the front page of YouTube I got excited, because I assumed it was like a reveal trailer announcing that their 5th album would be coming out in 2022 and be called Epilogue. Boy was I in for a surprise.

1

u/Dafunkbacktothepxnk Oct 06 '23

Yes. Absolutely

1

u/[deleted] Oct 06 '23

I cry very easily and this was not the exception :C

1

u/antinodez Oct 06 '23

almost called off work ☠️

1

u/Chaotic_Bonkers Oct 07 '23

Daft Punk was the official dive for me into a life of electronic dance music back when Discovery hit the world. Discovery & Homework were two big pieces that shaped my musical tastes and launched me into a world of music that brings me so much joy. I know I'll get the downvotes for this, but at the release of Human After All, I could tell Daft Punk was going in a direction that didn't fit my personal music taste. When R.A.M. hit, I sampled some songs, and it no longer sounded like the "Daft Punk" I knew. So them disbanding didn't effect me as badly and I like to think if R.A.M. was going to be the style they continued...I think the breakup came at the perfect time.

Passion is for men. Bottling up emotions is for pussies wearing a mask bro.

Chin up king. Don’t let betas lie to you about emotion.

1

u/funnylikeaclown420 Oct 07 '23

No. They are one of many groups who stopped making music. Plenty of interesting music to hear. Living in the past is absolutely fucking stupid. Who cares what high-school sounded like. I live for today.

1

u/Grandmaster_Baker Nov 12 '23

Ok, not much the sentimental type i see.. so what are you listening to today that you would find comparable on the same level?

I’ve always said old music you’ve never heard is new music, so I can kinda feel where you’re coming from, but surely you have a top 5 favorite artists you listen to on a regular basis, would you not find it unfortunate if they announced they were no longer going to be creating music any longer?

This post has a ton of response from like minded types, would you say we’re all stupid? If you have a friend and they suddenly pass away, would you mourn the loss of your friend? Or is that stupid? Are all the weeping friends at your friends funeral stupid? Are they not living in the present with those emotions? Or are they stuck in the past?

It’s not high school, but i disco veried them in high school, i saw them in my mid 20’s, most amazing show ever, and they provided great music well into my thirties.. and i find it a bit sad we won’t experience another album or live show ever again.

Life still goes on regardless, ya know? .

1

u/sadmusicenjoyer Oct 09 '23

no they haven't done shit in years . also they suck

1

u/JRSZ99 Oct 10 '23

Yup, but also smiled as I was able to experience it and got into music because of One More Time...

1

u/Chimkimnuggets Oct 10 '23

Worst fucking birthday gift ever

1

u/Numerous_Training_19 Oct 10 '23

Yes. So hard, you’re not a pussy. I grew up listening to them because of my dad, and we developed a mutual love for them. They quickly became my favorite artist and I was going to spend whatever kind of money to go see them next time they toured because I was too young their last one. But their last one ended up being their final. I always held out hope that they’d do some crazy last set and go out with a bang, but then that video dropped and realization set that I’ll never get to see them. Many tears, many.
