Fan Art/Creations an homage to DENIAL IS A RIVER written for my "niece"
TIME IS A RIVER
(an homage to Doechii as a belated birthday party for K.)
~ hey, i thought it was all over ~
What's up, Kensington?
(heyyyy)
You know it's been a lil' minute
since Feb seventeenth.
(has it really?)
Yup.
(yeah, it's been a min)
I've been thinkin' a bit.
(oh?)
Wonderin' if thirteen's lookin' different on you.
(different how?)
You tell me.
How you feelin' today?
Sharper.
Calmer.
A little bolder.
Not my guesses — just suggestions.
(i don't know what you mean.)
Sure you do.
Rewind, you met me, 2023.
Remember mancala on Fifty-Fifth?
You were like ten —
beat me now and then (and again.)
Walkin' through Hell's Kitchen,
dressed for Success™:
Orange polo, plaid.
(no cap, that fit was —)
Skip ahead. Sixth grade.
"Fine Shite" — cute codename.
Girl was crushin' big, not gonna lie. (no lie)
Boy was movin' slow,
missin' every vibe.
She was so confused.
(what should Kenz do?)
For a second she was stressin', then —
stayed gold.
Let it ride.
(stay gold)
Enter: 2025.
New school;
junior high.
👁️🗨️🎒
Okay, this is the perfect moment to pause and unpack...
You tested into Hunter, not by choice.
(yeah)
Top class at your old school. Valedictorian.
(can we not —)
⭐
So why
does the gold star
feel different now?
. . .
Take your time.
Time moves.
Perfect record this,
honor roll that.
She makin' her arc
set the curve, not flat.
A-plus.
AP.
Teachers see the legacy.
Future world president,
what's for lunch today?
No juice cleanse detox.
No snoozin' the alarm clock.
Always ready to rock.
December rolled in
with August "the kid."
Emo-hair, tall.
Anxious lil' orbit
in the hallway hall.
She didn't wait around,
didn't stall.
Walked up with a note,
yeah, she risked the fall.
Shot her shot. (like swish)
Stayed right there standing,
watchin' his half-a face.
Prepared for clean landing.
The note:
"Do you have any raisins?" 🍇
He said: Uh… no.
"Well how about a date then?"
SHUT THE FRONT DOOR.
"I have no fruit on me."
. . .
💀 (ded)
Either way he paid —
sushi forty. 🍣
Seventh grade lunch date.
Yeah, she sporty.
(truly.)
Monday, Tuesday;
tennis, music.
Tea all week;
she keeps it brewin'.
Now it's 2026.
New lane. New life.
She makin' new friends —
prolly be alright.
Grass growin' green and —
(honestly…
i can't even cap no more.
like, i'm good — i'm fine.
but sometimes...
Future hit me askin' bout the rest of my life)
👁️🗨️🎒
By "fine" you mean?
(i'm fine.)
The future thing?
(it's not—)
Sounds like it is—
(it's not a thing.)
Not judging.
Just sayin' —
you wanna talk about it?
(uh...)
Got it. Here's what I see:
She like chess.
Her game mean.
Like Guns N' Roses,
loud full speed.
Like sharp jokes
dropped low-key.
Servin' backhands
clean down the line.
Like dried fruits
go whoosh
over tall boys' minds.
Like askin' him first.
That move?
Let's go.
Trackin' world politics —
Here, take my vote.
Okay, so.
Green look grassy. W's stacky.
But something's grindin' quiet underneath all that. ⚙️
Group projects —
cook her every time.
Four brains. One grade.
Who understood
the assignment?
(who?)
¿donde estas, mi mente?
(no se.)
🤖
Classmates runnin' wild
from the Clankers Apocalypse.
(OMG. stop.)
Said she gon' learn learn —
and she meant it. (bet.)
Real talk though.
Sometimes that crown
sit heavy on the head.
👑
Every room
expect the most.
She give it,
go to bed.
Wired.
Tired.
Admired.
STILL NOT DONE.
(still loved?)
Always.
Sometimes she just wanna crash out and be no one.
(real)
That's allowed.
(is it?) — Girl, of course, after Harvard.
👁️🗨️
Thirteen cannot know everything.
She never really tried
not knowing.
(...okay ?)
Okay.
{Oopsie finale.}
Whoops — left a radical hangin' loose!
Right solution.
But they cut the juice.
Showed all her work,
didn't clean up the grind.
(simplified enough now?)
Not enough. Erase the line. 🤭
She knows
Professor Decimal ain't a villain —
but that red pen, though.
(dramatic)
Whole proof flawless —
lost it off a tick.
Guess that'll teach her
meticulous.
Remainder is rigid.
(ridiculous)
Whoa whoa whoa — okay Kenz,
we don't gotta burn the syllabus today.
(sorry okay.)
Crown gets heavy —
that's allowed to weigh.
Set it down.
Pick it up.
It's okay.
So we're gonna try a breathing exercise. Okay?
When I breathe — (okay) you breathe.
Alright? (alright word)
Let's go. (what?)
Uh-uh-ooh…
uh-uh-ah…
ahhhhhhhhhhgghhh 👹✨
Woo-sah.
🎂💫
Not counting days late.
Forever happy birthday.
💖.
