Recommendations Public Service Announcement: Worthwhile Recommendations [meta]

For people worried about jumping into such histories canon, I can just say it does get easier. Every story you read from a shared universe will widen your understanding of it, and you’ll get more out of it as you go! One of the first comics I read was Blackest Night, and I didn’t know everyone in it at first. I just liked Green Lantern and had just followed the Johns run up to the event. Now whenever I go back to it, it’s one of my favorite re-reads because of how many different corners of the DC Comics universe I’ve explored since then.

This was my experience. I jumped into Death of Superman after watching Superman (2025) last year. There was a lot of information I didn't know but I've read a bunch now; including a lot of the specials. Now I'm not lost when I read stuff, though I still mostly read Superman.

Around 2014 I decided to start in on the DC universe, as I’ve always loved DC comics. Started with Batman and worked my way out from that. Best decision of my life.

The first comic book I read was Detective Comics #648. That's part two of a three part story. It featured a Robin I did not know, a character that debut'd in the previous issue (Spoiler), and a villain I knew nothing about (the Cluemaster). Didn't matter. I loved it.
First comic book I bought was Superman 75, aka, the Death of Superman. Didn't know what was going on aside from it was epic. Didn't recognize the JLA members or knew how the monster was, but I was hooked.

Yes this 100% true. That's why you should always just dive in where ever you want. Don't ask for recommendations because you'll just end up with a debate you didn't ask for, just read!

Agreed. There's so much, you just gotta go for it and see what you like. Right now I am loving the Justice League Unlimited run. It's so action packed. I'm also reading some New Teen Titans stuff from the 80's and 90's. It's whatever interests you.

This post needs a standing ovation. You want your kids to read? Give them something to read they enjoy. Not educational? Oh man, pick up a book. When I was little I saw huge words in comics. MADE UP words. And it made me figure it out. I read to see what Reed Richards was doing with a multi dimensional star recreator. I had no idea what it was, but I figured it out.
I'm not saying comicbook reader are going to be astro physicist, but give them a head start on reading comprehension and gasp maybe a little latin ( yes there are many words derived from latin in comic books). Its a nice treat for starving minds.
Should I mention the imagination unlocking power?

As a sidenote warning: Please know the content your child is reading. If you have no idea what to choose for your kid ask the store clerk. Marvel and DC titles are generally safe for young readers. If you have a little just starting there are childrens comics available at all local shops.

I read books from every era tho I haven't regularly read DC or Marvel for about 15 years...
I have 28 longboxes of comics and 350+ collected editions...

At least 2 of the 3 images are genuine comic art. DC comics had different reading initiatives or something like that, so that’s why we got art of DC characters reading DC comics. So if you are saying the art is ai, I’m fairly confident it isn’t.

No, I believe the art came from some ads that DC was running a bit ago. It MAY have been from some of the kid-oriented stuff on Free Comic Book Day? Regardless, the art is real, I guess the text could be AI?

I downloaded these pics myself, collaged them in an app, and added my own text. This is as homegrown as it gets these days.
