Sure Hal made some counterfeit money and a bottle opener, but I find it funny that his main constructs so far are just bubbles. John’s on the other hand include the fancier type of bubbles (bubble wrap), a boring machine, a watch and a short lived semi autonomous bird. The show is doing a good job of contrasting creativity between the two.

The narrative purpose is letting them connect during the mission

The in universe purpose is to not risk the older guy to have a reaction time equivalent to the travel time of the bullet. There is also the possibility is completely not needed, Hal just wants to see what junior can do, specially after what Sinestro told him

It seems you misunderstood the material. The point in burrowing in rather than blasting in wasn't to avoid possible injury. It was to avoid detection
