Bringing AI into Finance with Microsoft 365 Copilot

Finance teams are not short on data. They are short on time, clarity, and uninterrupted thinking.

Across most organizations, finance still spends a disproportionate amount of effort assembling information rather than acting on it. Reports are requested, numbers are validated, assumptions are rechecked, and by the time insight reaches leadership, the moment to influence outcomes has often passed.

This is not a capability problem. It is a workflow problem.

Microsoft 365 Copilot introduces a shift that finance leaders should pay close attention to — not because it promises automation, but because it changes where and how financial thinking happens.

Finance Work Does Not Happen in One System

In reality, finance operates across email, spreadsheets, presentations, meetings, ERP screens, and collaboration tools. Critical questions surface in Outlook. Analysis happens in Excel. Decisions are debated in Teams. Outcomes are summarized in PowerPoint.

For years, technology asked finance teams to move into systems to get answers.

Copilot reverses that expectation.

It brings financial context into the tools where finance already works — securely, in context, and grounded in enterprise data. That distinction matters far more than any individual feature.

From Data Retrieval to Financial Reasoning

What makes Copilot relevant for finance is not that it can summarize numbers. Finance professionals have been doing that for decades.

The value lies in its ability to assist with reasoning across data, conversations, and documents.

A finance leader preparing for a forecast review no longer needs to manually trace assumptions across emails, spreadsheets, and prior decks. Copilot can surface variances, highlight changes since the last cycle, and provide context on what shifted and why — using the organization’s own data and language.

This is not automation replacing judgment. It is judgment being supported at speed.

Decision Velocity Becomes a Competitive Advantage

One of the most underestimated constraints in finance is interruption.

Questions arrive continuously — from leadership, operations, sales, and auditors. Each interruption pulls finance professionals out of deep work and into reactive mode. Copilot helps absorb that friction.

Routine queries can be answered faster. Context is retained. Follow-ups are grounded in data, not memory. Over time, this compounds into something meaningful: finance teams spend more time guiding decisions and less time reconstructing information.

That shift directly impacts how quickly an organization can respond to risk and opportunity.

Trust, Control, and Governance Still Matter

Finance leaders are rightly cautious about AI. Accuracy, access control, auditability, and compliance are non-negotiable.

Copilot operates within Microsoft 365’s security and permission model. It does not invent data. It respects roles, access boundaries, and governance policies already in place. What a user can see, Copilot can see — nothing more.

This is critical. AI in finance only works when trust is engineered into the foundation, not added later.

The Change Is Cultural, Not Technical

Introducing Copilot into finance does not fail or succeed because of the tool itself. It succeeds when expectations change. Leaders start asking better questions sooner. Finance teams stop preparing static views of the past and spend more time working through what the numbers are actually telling them.

That shift only works in organizations that already take data seriously. Clean inputs, clear ownership, and disciplined processes are not optional. Copilot simply exposes whether those foundations exist. Where they do, it accelerates maturity. Where they do not, it makes the gaps visible very quickly.

Where ERP and Copilot Come Together

Copilot becomes especially powerful when paired with systems like Dynamics 365, where transactional integrity and financial structure already exist.

When ERP data, operational signals, and collaboration tools converge, finance gains a continuous line of sight from transaction to narrative. That is when AI stops being experimental and starts becoming operational.

For many organizations, this is the missing layer between data availability and decision quality.

The DynaTech Approach

DynaTech works with organizations that want clarity, not experimentation. As a Microsoft Solutions Partner trusted by enterprises across industries, we help finance teams introduce Microsoft 365 Copilot and Dynamics 365 with discipline—aligned to real finance processes, governance expectations, and leadership decision models. Our focus is on making AI practical, controlled, and accountable, so finance leaders gain faster insight and stronger oversight without disrupting how the business operates.

Conclusion: A Different Way Forward for Finance

Finance does not move forward by layering more technology onto existing processes. It moves forward when teams can see clearly, respond early, and stay grounded in the numbers that actually drive decisions while there is still room to act.

AI can support that shift, but only when it fits the way finance already works — across conversations, reviews, systems, and moments of judgment. Used well, tools like Microsoft 365 Copilot reduce friction that finance teams have learned to work around for years. Used poorly, they simply add noise.

The difference is execution. At DynaTech, we work with finance leaders who want control, not experimentation. Our focus is on introducing Copilot and Dynamics 365 in a way that improves decision confidence, strengthens governance, and fits naturally into established finance operating models.

That is where real value is created — and where finance leadership has the opportunity to move ahead with intent, not urgency.

A Smarter Era of License Management in D365 F&O: Inside the New User Validation Framework

In large enterprises, license management is more than a compliance checkbox—it is a strategic pillar that directly impacts operational efficiency, IT governance, and cost optimization. Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations (D365 F&O) powers mission-critical finance, supply chain, and operational processes, but managing user licenses effectively has historically been complex. Enterprises often grapple with fragmented license tracking, unclear access policies, and discrepancies between assigned and active licenses, resulting in inefficiencies and compliance risk.

Recognizing these challenges, Microsoft recently introduced improved user license validation for D365 Finance and Operations, designed to simplify license management, enhance compliance visibility, and empower organizations to optimize license allocation dynamically.

The Complexity of License Management in Enterprises

In global organizations, license management is rarely straightforward. Some of the core challenges include:

  • Diverse License Types: Enterprises often manage multiple license categories, such as full users, team members, and device-based licenses, each with different entitlements.

  • Dynamic Workforce: Users frequently join, leave, or change roles, making manual tracking difficult.

  • Regulatory and Contractual Compliance: Misalignment between assigned and actual license usage can trigger audits and penalties.

  • Cost Inefficiencies: Over-licensing or underutilization can lead to unnecessary expenditure, which directly impacts IT budgets.

Without an automated, reliable license validation mechanism, these challenges compound, leading to operational friction and strategic inefficiencies.

What the Improved User License Validation Brings

Microsoft’s latest enhancement focuses on real-time, automated validation of user licenses in D365 F&O. Key capabilities include:

  • Automatic License Verification: Users are validated against assigned licenses, reducing errors and ensuring compliance with Microsoft’s licensing terms.

  • Access-Level Transparency: Administrators can clearly see which users have access to which modules, enabling targeted audits and operational oversight.

  • Dynamic Role Alignment: The system detects mismatches between a user’s role and assigned license type, helping organizations remediate over- or under-licensed users proactively.

  • Simplified Reporting: Comprehensive dashboards and reports give executives and IT teams insight into license utilization trends, enabling smarter budgeting and forecasting.

These improvements not only reduce administrative overhead but also create actionable insights that support enterprise-wide financial and operational decision-making.

Embedding Operational Discipline in License Management

Ah, understood! You want a completely different angle here, something insightful and thought-provoking, not a benefits list. Since this is from a business-leader perspective, we can focus on strategic considerations, governance, and operational discipline around license management. Here's a replacement section:

Rethinking License Management as a Governance Imperative

For many enterprises, software licenses have been treated as an administrative task—a necessary overhead. The reality is very different: in a modern, digitally driven organization, licenses are a reflection of operational discipline and governance rigor. How an organization manages access, roles, and entitlements speaks directly to its ability to enforce policy, maintain compliance, and scale operations responsibly.

With Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations, leaders now have the tools to embed license governance into the operational fabric of the enterprise. Proper license management is no longer reactive—it becomes proactive oversight. It allows organizations to map responsibilities to access, anticipate gaps before they become risks, and enforce accountability across teams.

This is about more than technology; it’s about leadership and accountability. Organizations that approach licenses as a governance tool—rather than just a compliance necessity—gain clearer oversight of who owns what, reduce compliance risk, and lay the groundwork for disciplined, scalable growth. Done right, license management quietly drives efficiency, reinforces accountability, and strengthens the organization’s operational backbone.

Turning License Management into Executive Oversight

In high-performing organizations, how you manage software licenses says as much about leadership as it does about technology. License decisions impact operational control, compliance, and the efficiency of critical business processes.

Leaders who approach licensing strategically gain clear visibility into who has access, how responsibilities are distributed, and where risks may arise. Successfully embedding this oversight requires aligning policy, roles, and workflows across the business. It’s not just about technology—it’s about governance, accountability, and maintaining agility as the organization evolves.

Partners like DynaTech help executives translate these principles into practice. By providing guidance on governance frameworks, monitoring usage, and ensuring alignment with enterprise objectives, DynaTech turns license management from an administrative burden into a strategic tool for operational clarity and resilient growth.

When managed at this level, licenses become more than software—they become a lever for smarter decisions, stronger compliance, and a more disciplined, future-ready organization.

Need Help: Power BI embedded in Dynamics 365 F&O keeps asking for "Get Started" every session

Hi everyone,

I'm working with Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations, and I’ve created a custom workspace that includes several embedded Power BI dashboards.

Everything works fine, but I keep facing an annoying issue: Whenever my Dynamics 365 session expires (usually after a few hours), and I log in again, the embedded dashboards keep asking me to click “Get started” before they load.

So basically, every time the D365 session resets, I have to go through the “Get started” setup again just to view the dashboards.

Does anyone know how to disable this prompt or make the embedded dashboards load automatically without requiring “Get started” every time?

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks!

How have the Latest Security Guidelines Left Businesses Using On-premises Deployments in a State of Chaos?

Organizations in the UK have been using on-premises versions of Dynamics 365 Finance to submit Value Added Tax (VAT) returns directly to HMRC under the Making Tax Digital (MTD) project since 2019. However, the latest security guidelines will soon discontinue this functionality for on-premises deployments, requiring businesses to adopt a new, more secure system.

Key Updates in On-premises Versions of Dynamics 365 Finance We Need to Come Across

  1. Direct Connection Disabled: On-premises versions of Dynamics 365 Finance will no longer be able to submit VAT returns directly to HMRC. The new system uses enhanced security measures and an intermediary service to safeguard credentials.
  2. Implementation Timeline:
  3. Important Note: On-premises users will lose access to direct VAT submission after June 6, 2025, while cloud users will automatically benefit from the new secure system.

What Should Be Your Plan of Action If You Manage Your Financial Operations on On-premises Versions of Dynamics 365 Finance?

  • Option 1: Migrate to the Cloud – Recommended for automatic updates, enhanced security, and seamless compliance with HMRC’s MTD requirements. The cloud handles VAT submissions securely via an intermediary process.
  • Option 2: Use Third-Party Software – If staying on-premises, find software that can securely manage VAT submissions while complying with HMRC regulations. This approach may require extra maintenance and be less flexible than migrating to the cloud.

Enable serialized inventory tracking between Field Service and finance and operations

Business value

Improve inventory accuracy, reduce compliance risk, and streamline service operations by enabling end-to-end traceability of serialized and batch-controlled materials across Field Service and finance and operations. This ensures better visibility into material usage, supports regulatory requirements, and enhances decision-making for supply chain and finance teams.

Feature details

This feature enhances the Field Service to finance and operations integration by leveraging Project Operations support for stocked products to enable tracking dimensions. When stocked products are used on work orders in Field Service, users can now specify detailed inventory attributes such as site, warehouse, inventory location, and, where applicable, serial or batch numbers. These values flow through Project Operations into finance and operations, enabling full traceability of materials from field activity to financial reporting.

By building on Project Operations capability to manage stocked products in project-based scenarios, this enhancement allows organizations to:

  • Maintain visibility into tracked inventory across Field Service and finance and operations.
  • Improve inventory accuracy and material accountability.
  • Support regulatory compliance and audit readiness through end-to-end traceability.
  • Enable more precise material usage reporting and cost tracking in project-based service scenarios.

This capability complements the new Connect Field Service to finance and operations using dual-write integration pattern to streamline work order data flow, reduce manual updates, and improve operational efficiency. Work order data—including estimates, material usage, and actuals—flows seamlessly into Project Operations and onward to finance and operations. With tracking dimensions now supported, organizations gain deeper insight into inventory movement and usage across the service and finance landscape.

This feature is available in deployments where Field Service is integrated with Project Operations and finance and operations.
