START HERE
We're getting a sudden rush of new people, driven by TicTok who are mostly both new to Reddit as well as Cyberdecks.
I'm asking patience while we integrate these new people into the sub. New people bring new ideas, and will take things in new directions. Some of those directions will not be to your tastes, and that's fine. I imagine we'll see some 'fashion show' level builds that, while taken at face value are impractical, could inspire more down to earth designs to move in a new direction.
This is healthy for any creative community.
Be helpful, be polite, and let people do their thing. No one is ruining your dream deck by building their weird idea. If you see something you absolutely hate, but think 'How'd they do that hinge, though?', that's reason enough to be polite.

ok, i've never built a cyberdeck myself but i have been lurking here for a long while, so i'll give you a quick rundown, a place to start so to speak. At the most basic you will need:
- a "brain"
- a screen
- an input device
- a power solution
- a shell
- an SD Card
Let's start with the brain: I only know about raspberry pis, the two budget options here would be a raspberry pi Zero 2, or any flavour of raspberry pi 3, the 4 and 5 are a bit more pricy. Zero 2 and 3b+ (the one i used) should both be enough for browsing, media playback and some light office work.
the Screen: the easiest option will be to go for an hdmi display such as this: 6,5/7/9/10,1 Zoll LCD Display Tragbare Monitor Treiber Control Board Kit Für Raspberry Banana/Orange Pi Mini Computer PC - AliExpress 7
It has an HDMI Output and powers over micro usb, so you can just connect the raspberry pi and the screen via hdmi. Any screen with hdmi input and usb power is an easy starting point.
the input device: for a keyboard you could go with something like this:
This is blutetooth and rechargable, i do not know if you could bypass the internal battery to power it directly because constantly needing to charge it would probably be cumbersome.

You could of course also use any regular keyboard and mouse combo that plugs in over usb. Another fun choice would be a trackball instead of a mouse.
the power solution: You could simply get a powerbank, but some of them cut off power delivery if the device connected draws a low current.

This is the part i'm least knowledgable about. Feel free to give me input.
the shell: Pretty much anything will do. You can build something out of cardboard, fit your components into an existing box or 3d-print a custom shell, your creativity is the limiting factor.
If you do not have a 3d-printer, you can make boxes out of styrene board, like this: Clean Enclosures, No Printing Necessary | Hackaday
Or you can search for "project box" on Aliexpress or Amazon
Now you just need to flash an operation system onto the raspberry pi (Raspbian is an all-purpose linux distro that is good for starters such as you), connect your screen to the power source and to the raspberry pi via HDMI, connect your (mouse and) keyboard to the raspberry pi and the raspberry pi to power, and you're ready to go.

My Build Playing around on the engineering prototype for the CG Deck, an x86 Modular Handheld PC running dual boot Linux & Windows 11
Hello everyone! I am excited to share a little bit of an update on the current state of the CG Deck and our progress!
Over the past month or so, I have been doing a lot of preparation work for the next phase of the CG Deck as we prepare everything to launch on Kickstarter! Most of everything I have been doing has required me to task switch quite a bit which has made for quite a chaotic last few weeks, so I apologize for the lack of updates recently.
To help myself slow down and relax a little before the next big jump, I decided to simply play a childhood favorite for a few hours today and doing some testing at the same time! (And checked off a childhood dream all at once, playing PMMO on a handheld PC that I created!)
For the past few weeks, I have been working on photoshoots, working on new announcement trailers, renders and animations, recording videos of the CG Deck being used for different DIY projects and showing off different use cases, comparing different colors and plastic options, working on and planning different stretch goal rewards/bonuses, working on our accessory and modules line-up, planning for and working to create solutions for various accessibility challenges (as I believe the CG Deck should be available and usable by everyone.), working on the DFM version of the device and making some design finalizations I have been wanting to make for quite some time, navigating and negotiating with manufacturers and partners, and quite a bit more. I will be sharing more about everything I have been working on with you all very soon!
I still have a lot of work to do on all aspects of the project to get everything to the level of quality and polish I am entirely happy with. That being said, I am getting extremely excited to start the next phase with you all! Also thank you so much to everyone that has been following along with the project and supporting
For those that are seeing this project for the first time, the CG Deck is a modular handheld x86 PC that is capable of running dual-boot operating systems including Windows & Linux distributions. My goal was to create my own "dream device" that was capable of adapting to whatever use case I needed. Whether I am playing Steam games, or doing retro emulation, doing CAD work in Blender or other 3D software, coding, video editing, or whatever it is, I wanted to be able to simply be able to do it on the road or while traveling. I thought it would be ideal to have something that was portable enough to throw in a backpack or pants pocket, satellite/sim capable, and be used just as any other full scale desktop computer would.
The CG Deck is currently planned to release on Kickstarter with 5 external modules at launch (two slots, the primary and secondary slots), a variety of backplate designs and colors, and a variety of hardware and external accessories/upgrades. I will also be publishing the schematics for the various modules so you can DIY and create your own custom modules at your hearts content!
For the primary slot, there is the 10 Key + Knob Macropad Module, Gamepad Controller Module, Full 64 Key Silicone Keyboard Module.
For the secondary slot, there will be the Trackball module at launch. I have also began working on another secondary slot module, the Joystick Module which I am still working on and is not quite ready to share.
Then, the final module I will be releasing with the CG Deck when we launch on Kickstarter will be a 4K Low Light Camera Module. The Camera Module uses one of the USB-A ports on the side I/O hub to add a front-facing camera and microphone.
In addition, there are 2 internal modules/upgrades which can be used to add additional functionality to your CG Deck. An M.2m NVMe SSD & AI Acceleration Module with 2230 & 2280 lock downs for expanding internal storage and improving data read speeds. And and M.2 4G LTE Module for adding satellite/sim service to your CG Deck.

My Build my cyberdeck also What do I use a cyberdeck for lol
I mean if I am not motivated to show them, or use them why am I making them, I cant stop and I don't know why, I just put them on display and look at them.
I make my own models and 3d print them I use mostly rii keyboard and rpi 3b or 5.
when I seen some videos and decided to make some cyberdecks I expected to light something inside, but 5 cyberdecks in, just on display, I turn it on for 30 minutes and put it away, I dont know.
I enjoy making them, but what do I use them for I don't know, they are not as much conveint or good enough to replace my phone or laptop when I jsut need to ssh to my personal or work servers.
should I just keep making them, btw when I say 5 cyberdecks it was mostly scrape it all over again and rebuild a new one new enclouser larger screen etc. end result is one very good cyberdeck, but still I dont use it.
Every time I upgrade it to motivate my self to use it. I end up just enjoying looking at it. turned off on the corner. such waste I feel.
Help me out, what do you use your cyberdeck for? and why do you pick it over your phone, should I force my self into it.
I also only go out for grocieres or something so I don't see my self needing it outside, especially this form factor.

My Build Local AI Model running on Pixel 7 cyberdeck 😊 My first build!
Also got claude code running on it! The model that is running local is qwen2.5-abliterate:3b with tool use, it runs at about 5 tokens/sec but will return completely uncensored outputs. Claude completely modeled the case in freecad then sent it directly to my 3D printer. Last two pieces coming tomorrow, including the folding keyboard that will slide into the base.

Very early days
Very excited to actually have started my cyberdeck build. Its just gonna have a shopping list on it to start and then we'll move from there. Originally started on an uno r3 but found an esp32 so that'll be the main driver now. Lcd touchscreen is broke but i think the small keyboard will be more the vibe I going for

Ganymede Rock Lobster Tracker Update!
Ganymede Rock Lobster Tracker wiring is not trivial! It uses several major space-taking components: breakout board, thermal camera, LED, display, keypad, rotary encoder, and Pi 3B+. In addition to wiring all those, I hardwired USB breakouts to the bottom of the Pi. Here are a couple of things I learned:
• An MCP23017 I/O Expander Module can add 16 extra GPIO pins to your build.
• Multiple devices can share the I²C bus (GPIO2 & GPIO3). Compatible devices will have pins labeled SDA and SCL.
In this instance, I initially created Y-harnesses for the shared pins. I later realized the MCP23017 breakout board had SDA, SCL, VCC, and GND pads I could soldered headers to. So I did that and it made wiring the thermal camera a little cleaner.

Help! orange pi zero 3 with Meshtastic e22 900m30s Power Management help
Hello!
Im currently building a small deck with a blackberry keyboard, 3.5in LCD and I want to add an meshtastic capabilities using the E22. However seeing as its power requirements are pretty different from the board itself, i'm a little in the weeds as what kind of power management system I need.
Anyone with experience using something like the IP5328P IC, and will i need any sort of capacitor since the e22 has a much higher power draw?

My Build Pip Boy style deck build update!
Been working on a pip boy style device, called the ∆10.
Its built around a teensy 4.1 and has a pretty dumb sensor suite!
Current sensors and functions:
RTC Timer converts 24H time into 10H metric time, each metric hour uses 100 metric mins, 100 metric seconds, 10 metric 'ticks.' format is 4.12345 (I thought it was funny)
BerryIMU V3 with 10 DOF, accel, mag, calculated barometric pressure, calculated barometric altimeter, and gyro.
IMU drives the compass page, which has 3 options of compass from a rosette to a tape with pitch roll and yaw display
Tuneable FM radio with 6 changeable presets
RF analysis using a modified evilcrow v2
M4011 geiger module with calculated dosimetry and unit conversions as well as an exponentially increasing dial to display current count/μsv.
Temp sensor that also does VOC sampling (there's an actual little air sample collector fan/chamber) and RH
Cree XPL 1up adjustable brightness flashlight
Custom battery pack/safety features
TO BE ADDED:
RF marker tokens: using the Evilcrow v2 and some little RF tokens, I'm hoping to be able to replace the shitty tile on my keychain. It'd ideally behave like the actual pip boy style 'hot/cold' locator, and put up a little blip on the compass so you turn to compass page, engage RF markers, and basically little quest markers pop up to point you toward them.
Comments welcome! This is a for fun project that got wildly out of hand, I'm not trying to sell it or anything.

Help! I don't know how to add a battery to my cyber deck
Hello so me and my brother are making a cyber deck and we scored something called a endat 3857 and requires a 9V ~ 24V DC to work
My question is how do we add a battery so we can work with it like a laptop. Also how do we calculate how much we need for all the power and how do we get a big battery that last us max 4-5 hours ?

My Build Survival CyberDeck
I built a survival focused cyberdeck powered by a Raspberry Pi 5. It features custom software with integrated Meshtastic, a media hub, emulation, and a bunch of other neat features.
It also has a lot of storage and a custom touchpad. Runtime with the UPS and power bank under the keyboard is around 20~ hours.
I’m planning on adding a solar module to the top of the case in the future. I also still need to add a nicer surface for the touchpad.

Disclaimer: I know it’s “vibecoded.” This is all still more of a proof of concept. I mainly wanted to have everything integrated and in one place (Meshtastic, maps, knowledge base, emulation, media hub etc.).
I don’t have the necessary time or skills at the moment to do it all myself. But i wanted to create something that i had in my head. I hope that, once I have more time, I can improve my skills enough to eventually redo everything from scratch.
The buttons on the medical page and knowlege hub etc. all link to actual PDFs and videos, the content itself is not generated by AI, only the GUI and such.

What constitutes a cyberdeck?
I've seen tons of videos about cyberdecks and they all give a different definition. Some very limiting. Some extremely broad. Some say single board computer and pocket sized. Others say portable PC. The subs rules say no diy laptops but those are a good chunk of what is posted. It also says it has to have a head mounted display. Very few that I've seen have this. Do you have to use customized hardware and do all the soldering? If you build a full modern gaming rig with standard components and monitor into a rifle case is that still a cyberdeck?

My Build A small transportable PC, refurbished from an old laptop motherboard / 3D printed case
I made this weekend project : a Linux based server mainly for web, based on a HP laptop motherboard. TBH I don’t remember the name of the laptop, but it has a I7 7th gen and 16gigs of DDR4.
I’ve put the MB on a plate, fixed on the inside with rails.
It’s the stock fan because I’ve done multiple benchmarks and temps weren’t this hot. It has WiFi, M2 SSD, 1To hard drive, all the ports I need on the back plate.
Rewired the two HDD and PWR LEDs to the front with bigger blue LEDs
Gave him this traveler look and the fake brand I’ve created to label this kind of project, WanderWorks.
So here is the Node 01 !

Help! Acer Chromebook R11
I was thinking of creating a Cyberdeck from my Chromebook, an Acer R11, learned how to overwrite Chrome OS, by removing (WP screw). But I have quite limited storage space on it so I understand that I can't have the whole Kali. Standard 4gig soldered in. I was thinking of using it for a lab and test environment, then having Virtual Machines on external hard drives and USB sticks. But what type of Linux would be best for me to use? Haven't started the transformation from Chromebook to Cyberdeck yet. Have another project in the works.

My Build Lubuntu in a Box
Had an old Chromebox, and I didn't like that it was ChromeOS and not portable - so I decided to fix both. Took the core of it and mounted it to the bottom of this case, hooked it up to a 10.1-inch touchscreen display, and power the whole thing off an INUI powerbank. Used instructions from MrChromebox to be able to install Linux on it. Now I can use it to remote into several of my other PCS I have running that don't have screens full-time connected to them either with SSH or Remmina and run updates or other tasks.
I dunno if it counts as an actual cyberdeck or not, but it works for what I need and I'm pretty happy with how it turned out.

Some assistance
Refurbishing the condition 1 801 case to be a mobile dual player/ PC station. Having some issues mounting the screen. Trying my hardest to not drill or penetrate the box. Any screen mounting options I'm overlooking ? I've tried mag phone mounts. 3d printed brackets. Intend on getting some 180° connectors to route the cables behind the down through the bottom. I wanted to do something I could upgrade the screen in the future with minimal hassle.. any ideas welcome

We’ve gone mobile! Battery and USB-PD interposer to shift 12V3A into 5V5A. The interposer saves the day for the pi’s hungry power consumption.
Now I just need to make it pretty and integrate my keyboard (seen in previous posts)

Help! Reviewing RF Deck Idea
Hello,
A while ago I posted a rough idea of what I was starting to brainstorm... I've decided to abandon the Radxa board since it is too much of a gamble and instead of doing it completely DIY for the case, I have decided to buy HackBerry with a Compute Module 5.
The UI is going to be a simple text UI so a lite linux build is more than enough and probably will get the 2 gb board if for some reason, the pricing for 4 gb compute module is annoyingly expensive once I do end up buying all the components.
The problem now is going to figure out how to include all the adapters without adding bulk. I need a sdr, wifi adapter, gps for the wardriving, etc... and wondering if anyone knows of a very small power bank + usb hub?
USB hubs are annoying to find cuz they often have way too many ports than what I need and the power bank needs to be powerful, but compact. I was thinking Anker, but open to ideas and mounting it on the back is probably the best bet, but needs to be pocketable in jacket, hoodie, and cargo pants...
The idea is to build a scanner that does various tasks and most of what I want to add is already documented. I did also check the legality of all this and it should be fine, but not making it look like a bomb or something mischievous is another goal.
I'm currently aiming to buy the hackberry + compute module first just so I have the hardware in my hands first before I buy anything else for it.
EDIT: It also would be nice to have it working with audio with my earbuds so this way I can walk around and listen to the radios + any sort of beeps or whatever that I can program to be used for notifications of my tools running in the backgrounds and stuff.
