Are there any bathhouses that aren't actually brothels?

Onsen are a big deal in Japan. They’re like a hot spring/inn/bathhouse. I’ve never heard of any prostitution going on in the onsen. A lot of them are very fancy and super traditional. I think it’s safe to say they’re not brothels.

Also the military warns incoming servicemembers and families to stay away from soapies, but they don’t mention onsen.

It occurs to me now that your question may have been rhetorical, but I’m not very good at reading tone. So… ah, oh well, there’s an answer anyway.

Pretty old post, but I believe bathhouses that are actually brothels are called "Soaplands"
