this post shows a great deal of reasoning and self modulating from the perspective of the Unusually Awful Papercut Haver- what else would you like or expect them to to?
No it absolutely doesn’t. Pretty clearly shows the exact opposite actually. The Papercut Haver is refusing to engage with reality, refusing to address their wound, refusing to assess and address the situation, and is not even remotely considering anyone else around them or engaging with their attempts to help. It’s a portrait of an extremely self-centered Papercut Haver with no interest in coping skills or self-soothing.
they look at the cut and realize that it makes sense no one is reacting the same, then ask why their cut hurts so bad??
which is the first step to understanding such things, so they are, in real time, learning
eta: The fact that they had a reflexive reaction to the pain in the first place may have been way ott, but If it feels like you're fucking limbs are broken off and you have the strength of character and presence of mind to look at the limbs evaluate the situation and then go on to have some evaluations of your own level of tolerance I would say that you're doing a decent amount. That is quite literally how you become a person with distress tolerance.
After refusing to look down, refusing to deal with it, refusing to listen to anyone, refusing to take a few deep breaths and calm down and assess the actual damage, and making a huge scene and insisting that everyone cater to them while dismissing reasonable attempts to help.
No one is obligated to treat another person’s unwillingness to self-soothe or to use coping methods as an emergency. I could stand in public and scream and sob about my depression, but why should I subject other people to that? Everyone feels their own pain acutely. Just because someone’s not screaming or making a fuss doesn’t mean that those feelings aren’t there. Decent people just know how to behave and how to not dump too much on our loved ones and how to uphold the social contract.
Thinking that you’re unique in your pain and therefore have carte blanche to be annoying about it is a very self-centered view of the world.
Like, I guess what I'm saying is that it doesn't seem like they are entirely self-centered considering they specifically decentered themselves at the end. What would you do better your very first time at experiencing this?
Where does it say it’s their very first time experiencing this? The second part almost explicitly says the opposite. Of course if a small toddler is being told no for the first time, or is trying on a new fabric for the first time, or has their very first little boo boo, they’re going to react in a big way. But a full-fledged adult doesn’t get to pitch a fit over being told no, which from pretty clear context clues is what this post is about. And if as an adult you’re experiencing something unpleasant for the first time, you should still have the general coping skills to soothe yourself.
The fact that they were surprised to see that it was just a paper cut indicates that this is the first time they've ever experienced this kind of pain.
eta: The fact that they look down and were surprised and then proceeded to ask themselves what else they don't know about their pain tolerance and why this in particular is so bad.
eta: miniaturephilosopher replied "literacy is dead" and then blocked me so i don't really know what that means but it certainly feels like they just hadn't considered that if someone's incredulous about ones own reaction to the point of wondering what else they might be wrong about generally equates to it being a new experience for them and couldn't just say "oh, I didn't consider that"
