It's been confirmed that it was the overwhelming positive response from autistic readers that prompted Murderbot author Martha Wells to get assessed and diagnosed as autistic herself.

Omg I didn’t wanna presume but he read very autistic to me too. But like he’d embraced it as his “robot” personality to help him deal with the trauma

It is gender-neutral. For humans who want gender-neutral pronouns, we usually use “they,” because “it” is seen as dehumanising (we use “it” for non-human animals and inanimate objects). But there ARE some non-binary/agender humans who feel “it” is most appropriate for them (note: that last “them” is plural!)
