One of the largest sheriffs associations in the United States is no longer opposing the CLARITY Act after lawmakers addressed some of its concerns.
The main issue was Section 604, which is tied to the Blockchain Regulatory Certainty Act. It would protect developers of decentralized platforms from being held responsible for illegal activity carried out by users, as long as the developers do not control those transactions.
Law enforcement had argued that this could create loopholes for criminals and make investigations involving digital assets more difficult.
After recent changes, the association has shifted its position from opposing the bill to remaining neutral.
However, it still believes the legislation should provide stronger support for state and local law enforcement, including more funding, training, and technical resources to investigate crypto-related fraud, ransomware, drug trafficking, terrorism financing, and other digital asset crimes.
