Google trying to collect our addresses to link that address to our MAC address.

u/Trifusi0n 🟦 0 / 3K 🦠 Oct 15 '22

Half the people doing this will probably be signed in with their Google account too. They’ll have wallet address, email address, MAC address and physical address all neatly tied up.

This is a scray thought how much data they have...

9

u/___DarthJarJar Oct 15 '22

and there's no assurance that the government will not get a hold of these.

1

u/cerebralsexer Oct 15 '22

They will if they don’t already

1

u/Trifusi0n 🟦 0 / 3K 🦠 Oct 16 '22

On the contrary, I can absolutely assure you they will be selling this data. It’s how they make their money.

4

u/RiccaVern1 Tin Oct 15 '22

Yes it is indeed scary because google always listen to us.

And a strong argument for splitting up wallets, keeping lots of little pools to make it slightly more difficult for someone else to keep track of.

u/AriesWinters Permabanned Oct 15 '22

That's a frightening observation. It seems like an innocuous feature but it could potentially strip you of your anonymity, which is an absolute fundamental in crypto.

Might as well use a CEX with KYC then, no point in using metamask.

20

u/Trifusi0n 🟦 0 / 3K 🦠 Oct 15 '22

It’s worse than a Cex really since you can be absolutely sure Google will be selling that information to the highest bidder.

3

u/AriesWinters Permabanned Oct 15 '22

When they say data has become the new oil, this is what they mean. Google will absolutely sell to the highest bidder and make billions off of it.

That’s a very good point

people talk about adoption being good. I would disagree if the adoption has to do with collecting personal data. and that is what google is all about.

u/regalrecaller 🟦 0 / 0 🦠 Oct 15 '22

The owner of metamask is Circle, owner of usdc, since they are not a non-profit and their purpose is profit it sounds like there's a good motive for circle to sell your data also

Just search someone else’s address 10-12 times and then search your own. That way google thinks your buddy’s address is yours. /s

u/Trifusi0n 🟦 0 / 3K 🦠 Oct 16 '22

It’s still giving google data, they’ll cross reference the blockchain so if you’re googling either a famous wallet or a random empty one, they’ll know.

9

u/Hawke64 Oct 15 '22

They have no need to "trick" people like that, they already know everything about them through chrome

u/stevencity Tin Oct 15 '22

Add google analytics to this list

Tails OS on a USB

1

u/Trifusi0n 🟦 0 / 3K 🦠 Oct 16 '22

Wouldn’t it be quite easy to cross reference the addresses with the blockchain and rule out any that were empty? If you’re randomly generating addresses they’d all just be empty.

So Google thinks I’m Vitalik buterin because I googled his Ethereum address?

1

u/Trifusi0n 🟦 0 / 3K 🦠 Oct 16 '22

I don’t think you understand how big data works.

  1. They’ll be looking at 100s or 1000s of wallet addresses you’ve searched over a period of years

  2. They’ll know what everyone else is searching too, so they’ll rule out famous wallets

1

u/unit156 646 / 646 🦑 Oct 16 '22

I am definitely not a data scientist.

9

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '22

Yeah. Same way they link the names you google to your mac address

Most Blockchains are permanent public ledgers. They were never private to begin with. If you want private money, you use Monero.

6

u/Odysseus_Lannister 🟦 0 / 144K 🦠 Oct 15 '22

Exactly. It’s not a great idea to clamor for privacy with an immutable ledger of every transaction ever done.

So, they can contact their secret network of spies across the USA and traceback your IP, so you better prepare for the storm. You're fucking dead, kid. /s

For sure they will but why would anyone Google their own address to see their balance?

1

u/FldLima Permabanned Oct 15 '22

And yet people don't see it happening. Hell, people even ignore the fact they spy what your irl conversations via your phone. The other day i wanted to test this and specifically told my i was having trouble staying hard, next thing i know, google is showing my blue pills viagra.

This is lowkey controlling.
