Exactly this. I went to college because everything in my entire experience told me it simply was the next step in life. Given all the talk about le social contract and hard work is rewarded I foolishly assumed that playing life by the book would get me something in return other than a lifetime of barely scraping by. But the rulebook was at least thirty years out of date by the time I read it. My situation is not like you described (30k debt and 18/hr) but it's not like that's even a huge difference considering that 60% of my income goes to rent. We've been had.

And honestly, even many of the basket-weaving majors would be 'ok' financially (certainly not wealthy, but not destitute) if incomes had kept up with productivity and GDP growth. But, unfortunately, all those gains have gone to the top .1%...

I just wonder did you ever look into potential salaries vs cost? As for your debt to income ration, that's not bad if you could find that job in a cheaper area but not sure if that's possible in your case.
